An old adage reads: "A man is known by the company he keeps". A mem-ber of the United States Congress is keeping company with Charles B. Hudson, Charles W. Phillips, William_Kullgren, William Dudley Polley, G. Allison Phelps, Gerald L. K. Smith, and the publishers of Flanders Hall books, of "The Octopus", "Roll-Call" and "The American Digest". In him centers their hope for a permanent "Man on Horseback" for whom they have hunted so dili-gently. Subversivists named in this issue rally around him, distribute re-prints of his speeches, and peddle a book he recently wrote. He is Con-gressman-at-Large for the State of Illinois -- Stephen A. Dayl

NRS has frequently pointed out that franking privileges of many members of Congress are advantageously exploited by the enemies of this nation.

Stephen A. Day permitted Charles B. Hudson, sub-versivist de luxe of Omaha, to send out reprints of his (Day's) speeches under Congressional mailing franchises. Charles W. Phillips of Lincoln, Nebr., Nazi pamphleteer and publisher of "The Individualist", attached to his August 7th issue a reprint of Day's speech, "Congress-men Must Keep Faith With Selectees", accompanied by a note (illustration on page 5), which read:

I have extra copies of the enclosed reprint. If you desire more to distrib-ute at your local meetings or to mail to others, as long as the supply lasts will send them to you at your request.

The Taxpayer Foots the Bill

On July 19th, 1941, approximately 150 Nazi sympathizers attended an Open forum, held each Saturday night, at Dr. Richter's Health Cafe-teria, 325 West Third Street, Los Angeles. Here the Los Angeles Downtown Branch of the America First Committee holds its regular meetings each Monday night under the chairmanship of Benjamin Franklin Ballard, one of the organizers of a Nazi group which called itself the "American Guards". The same Nazi agitators frequent both meetings.

Page 2.

At this gathering, plans were discussed to picket the Hollywood Bowl, where Wendell L. Wilikie was to address a "Fight for Freedom" rally. At-tendants -- all Nazis -- were given large batches of reprints from the Congressional Record, of a speech delivered by Congressman Day on June 15th, 1941, entitled "We Must Keep America Independent". The reprints were inserted in the Congressman's envelope (illustration on page 4), and the Nazis had only to address and mail them -- at the expense of John Q. Taxpayeri

On August 1st, 1941, Day inserted in the Congressional Record a speech which he had delivered over the radio on the preceding day. He advertised and quoted from a book he had written, entitled "We Must Save the Republic". On the day of his broadcast, "The Free American" (also known as the Deut-scher iieckruf and Beobachter) official organ of the German-American Bund, carried the following paragraphs in its weekly feature column, "Behind the Curtain":

Two books of clean print and attractive binding from the with life and pulsating with truth truth that Americans sadly need to press of Flanders Hall (Scotch Plains, N. J. ), hold first place in know what this war's about and why "it happened again". this writer's interest. One is "It Happened Again", the other The companion volume by Congressman Day, like the former, "We Must Save the Republic". The first is the most complete compilation is practically a handbook of information about our Anglomanies, of the train of events that led to the Polish war and thense directly to Wor'd the author and backers of Union Now and "how the cards are War No. 2. The second is a brief for the Declaration of Indenpendence and stacked by .7ae administration", according to Mr. Day, so that the people the Constitution of the United States by Stephen A. "It Happened Again" admits the reader to the inner councils of Berlin. in accordance with the American constitutional system. The seven chapters London, Warsaw and Paris in a way that reads like a novel as it conducts include the titles, "Unmasking a Fraud", "Independent America vs. the him through the , intricacies of the problem that made the German-Polish Fifth Columnist Federation", "The Invasion Myth". "Some Observations on the Proposal to nor yet as dry historical recording, but as a documented narrative sparkling Wreck the Constitution to Put Over Union Now". (Price, $1).

Congressman Day did not tell his radio audience of the Bund's warm praise for his book. Nor did he make any reference to Flanders Hall, pub-lishers of Scotch Plains, N. J. The latter, exposed in NRS #126 as a Nazi propaganda agency, hurriedly registered with the State Department as agent for a foreign country. In hooking up with Flanders Hall, Day followed in the footsteps of the late Senator Ernest Lundeen, who had helped to put over the Flanders Hall book, "Lord Lothian vs. Lord Lothian".

Another fact the Congressman does not choose to broadcast is that grand jury hearings are now being conducted in Washington, and that among others, Elizabeth Dilling, who has had much to do with the sales promotion of Flan-ders Hall books, has been subpoenaed, according to the daily press.

Undoubtedly this grand jury investigation is responsible for the fact that Congressman Day's book is now published by the Shaw Publishing Company, 1311 G Street, N.W., Washington, D. C.

The Beacon Light Beckons

William Kuligren of Atascadero, Cal., publisher of a mumbo-jumbo, star-gazer magazine calling itself "The Beacon Light" -- widely read in all Nazi circles -- refers to Congressman Day's brainchild as a "must" book (illus-tration on page 4). Reviewing it, he says: "Briefly, he (Day) knits to-gether the teachings of the Protocols....To sum it up, here is one of the finest compilations of facts presented to the American public." Of course, Kuligren accepts the forged Protocols as "facts". Interesting also is the opening paragraph of the review, which states: "Certainly the most dynamic book we have reviewed since The Octopus, and .just as revealing in its own line. This is the book for you who are faint-hearted and discouraged." (The Octopus, the new U.S.-Nazi bible published by Charles B. Hudson, was exposed as a fake in NRS #140.)

Kullgrents September issue also contains a reprint of Congressman Day's radio address, "We Must Keep America Independent" (illustration on page 8).

e, Referring to the reprint, Kullgren states: 1

We are inserting in tnis issue a reprint from the kiongressional Record, a radio address by Bon. Stephen .y. Lay, entitled uwe Lust Keep ,imerica Independent". -t% small group of patriots has educated a large portion of the American public as to the cause of their miseries. Two years ago, we tried to draw these groups together through our paper, "America ,opeaks", but met with indifference from the various leaders. We need a national leader to draw these people together and march them to Washington. I take great pleasure in ad-vocating this. Phis plan has been advocated by t.narles iJudson, in Omaha, for some time.

In each issue, Kullgren prints a long list of books (illustration on page 4) for *hich he accepts orders from his readers. In this list he ad-vertises Stephen A. Day's masterpiece, and publications by Elizabeth Dill-ing, Nesta H. Webster, Gerald B. Winrod, G. Allison Phelps, Colonel E. N. Sanctuary, T. W. Hughes, Oscar Brumbach, General George van Horn Moseley, ,Shaemas O'Sheel -- all of whom have been exposed by NRS. Also advertised are The Octopus, the forged "Protocols", and "Lord Lothian vs. Lord Lothian". Author Stephen A. Day certainly finds himself in good company in this list of "Books You Should Read".

"Give Us This Day", Prays Pelley

On August 11th, William Dudley Pelley, Silver Shirt leader and ex-con-vict, devoted the entire front page of his weekly "Roll-Call" to a hymn of praise of the Congressman, captioning the article "Will Stephen A. Day Save This Republic?" (illustration on page 5).

Ever since Pelley announced his intention of becoming the first Ameri-can Fuhrer to occupy the White House, he has maintained close connections with officials who were foolish enough to accept his writings as gospel. He influenced the late Congressman Louis T. McFadden of Pennsylvania to insert Nazi propaganda material into the Congressional Record; and he had ex-Con-jgressman Jacob Thorkelson of Montana eating out of his hand. In Montana, it was said after the latter's defeat for re-election, that by their praise his Nazis friends had given Thorkelson the kiss of death. Pelley has always found someone in the House or Senate to agree with him. His latest discov-ery is Congressman Day. Of him Pelley says:

Representative Lay suddenly rises nead and shoulders above his compatriots in the Congress and introduces a joint resolution to save the xiepublic. Representative Day's method for ,,avind the ae-pub,lic is a sound metnCd -- a method that assails the vital core of our distempers. His joint resolution calls for a rescinding of the lend—lease -- and thereby the war making -- powers of the Great Promise Adreaker, dickering at the moment to trade the :Republic to Britain.

In another article, captioned "Meet Stephen Day", Pelley gives a de-tailed acc9unt of the Congressman's past, the schools and universities he attended, the posts he held, etc., saying:

He (Day) takes 'cis place on the patriotic honor roll along with Charlea A. Lindbergh, Senators Gerald i'ye and LJUrton Y. aheeler, Jacob 24orkelson and more.

THE BEACON LIGHT—September, 1941 BOOK REVIEWS

WE MUST SAVE THE REPUBLIC: By Hon. Stephen A. Day. Certainly the most dynamic book we have reviewed since The Octopus, and juso

as revealing in its o wn line. This is the book for you who are faint-hearted and discouraged. This book will raise your temperature and stimulate you to action, providing you are an American—I mean in spirit; being born in America doesn't necessarily make you an American, witness the New Deal gang, about half of whom were born in America.

Congressman Day opens up by agreeing with the President that the Republic is in grave danger; but they do not agree as to the source of the danger. Mr. Roogevelt says it is in Europe; Congressman Day says, and further proves that our danger is within our own gates. He says a wrecking crew is in charge, most of them of American birth.

....ahether the revolting 77th Congress will generate suffi-

cient spunk and genuine patriotism to go down the line with Rep-

resentative Day, remains to be seam....If the 77th Congress really

wants to go the whole hog on the revolt, here is its chance to

prove whether it is composed of Cnristian patriots or. Stalin-

Roosevelt instruments -- whether they love Their country more than they love Jewish-controlled Russia, with Jewish-controlled Britain

thrown in for boot:

The Coughlinites, too, have nothing but praise for the Illinois Rep-resentative. The July 1941 issue of "The American Digest", formerly known as the "Social Justice Digest", published in St. Louis, carried a front page article commending Day for his broadcast of June 15th, and reprinted the first part of the address (the second part appeared in the August is-sue). Day, according to the Digest,

lashed out against those Britons and Americans who have for many

years been plotting to overthrow the inlependent government of the

USA. Many congressmen are now aware of this dastardly plot. A few

of the braver ones are practically risking their lives on the bat-

tlefield of Congress to save our stepublio from the intrigues of the

ziritish Empire.

Such rot is offered as reading diet to the gullible public for no other purpose than to create disunity in the nation and distrust of the adminis-tration's foreign policy. Playing on the favorite Nazi theme, the article continues:

gvents have proven that we were in possession of startling

facts which were still hidden from the American people. Again our

position is vindicated.

Once Day's book was off the press, Nazis began to peddle and advertise it from coast to coast. G. Allison Phelps (exposed in IRS #157) informed his radio audience on August 18th that he was authorized by the Congress-man to take orders for the book.

Phelps, however, is not alone in Southern California in plugging the Day volume. Ballard read long, excerpts of it at the America First meet-ings, held on August 18th and September 1st, 1941, at Richter's Cafeteria. The book was also quoted at other America First gatherings, and people were asked to write and congratulate the Congressman.

Playing Politics or Havoc?

Congressman Day is playing polttics with the welfare and security of the country. Solons of his stripe believe in the Lindberghian "Wave of the Future", and aspire to ride on its crest. While playing up to the mob --as when he appeared before Gerald L. K. Smith's "Committee of 1,000,000" (related in last week's NRS) -- Day counts his imaginary votes at future elections. The very forces he is trying to arouse will destroy the coun-try's democratic institutions, but he has nothing to fear -- he sublimely believes -- for is he not on record as one who has prepared the way for them?

Day keeps a political eye on his home state, where The Chicago Tribune, king-pin of the isolationist antis-New Deal press, rules supreme. He watches, and is duly impressed by, the threats of blackmail of the "German-American

National Alliance" (exposed in NRS #88) whose "News Letter" for September makes it clear that the organization is out to get the scalps of all Con-gressmen who support the President's Foreign Policy.

Paul A. F. Warnholtz, Chairman of Public Relations Committee of the Alliance, blossoms forth with a front page article in the current issue, captioned "Five U. S. Congressmen" (illustration on pages 4 and 5).

Like Hitler, Like Warnholtz

"Americanism is asserting itself," says Warnholtz in his lead, "and good old Chicago is slowly following the brilliant lead which the great state of Illinois took during the last national election." Gloomily, he recounts how nine out of ten Congressmen from Chicago voted for the lift-ing of the Arms EMbargol but he finds solace in the fact that soon there will be another election and then, he prognosticates, a different wind will blow in the halls of Congress. Gleefully he points to the straws in the wind. "Nine out of ten, he writes, "such was the vote in Congress, and time went on. The people of the United States learned something about sol-emn pledges being merely 'campaign oratory', and that promises made by can-didates before election meant nothing at all. Grin, you political jokers," says Wartholtz, mand the people can be fooled. Maybe l"

But the little Nazi writer is encouraged since only eight out of ten Chicago CongresSmen voted for the Lend-Lease Bill; and the Draft Extension Bill passed by just one vote. Warnholtz heartily approves of the five (out of ten) Chicago Congressmen who voted against the Draft Extension Plan. Pointing to the "Yeas", he asks in stentorian tones, "Whose vote was that one?" and he thunders: "That vote must be charged against everyone who supported the bill."

Like the little paperhanger with the Chaplin mustache, Herr Warnholtz warns that the day of reckoning will come. Here (at the right) are his own words, as they appeared originally in the German-American National Alliance public-ation:

"Day Brings It Into Light"

Several weeks ago, an NRS informant, who speaks German fluently, sub-mitted a report which at that time appeared somewhat meaningless. Since then, however, it takes on significance. The report follows:

I was at the German House lust night. Hermann ,chwinn, Hans Jiebel, ,Milli Aendzia, and a person from the east whose identity I was unable to learn, were in conversation. They spoke German and talhed of "a big fellow in dashington who is all right, and who'll start the ball rolling". They did not mention his name.

Tongressional Record PROCEEDINGS AND DEBATES OF THE 77th CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION

United States of America

We Must Keep America Independent

RADIO ADDRESS OF

HON. STEPHEN A. DAY OF ILLINOIS

June 15,1941

(Printed in the CONGRESSIONAL RECORD of June 16, 1941)

Mr. DAY. Mr. Speaker, under leave to

extend my remarks in the RECORD, I in-

clude the following address which I de-

livered yesterday over the radio:

Before I was elected to the Congress of the

United States, I promised the people that I

would take the radio and issue a call for their

support when I found that the Nation which we love so dearly was in danger. I am com-

pletely satisfied that a grave peril now con-fronts us. Unless we act immediately and a vigorous protest from all loyal citizens reaches Washington at once, our form of

Government under the Constitution and our

American independence will be overthrown

not by a foreign invasion using military force

but by a treasonable betrayal which is already

in the making.

There is a powerful movement thoroughly financed throughout the British Empire and in all parts of the United States to surrender great, free America into a permanent con-

federation or union which will cancel the

Declaration of Independence written by

Thomas Jefferson in 1776 and completely

undermine the Constitution of the United States. Hore Belisha, former Secretary for

War in London, this week stated publicly that the plans have been worked out and it now awaits a word from Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt to complete the co-lossal surrender of all time. While we have

been engaged in discussing the wars in Eu-

rope, Asia, and Africa, and whether the

United States will be involved, the first secret

steps have been undertaken.

Millions of good Americans were shocked

when the Congress passed the lend-lease bill. What did it mean? What was to become of the Johnson Act forbidding loans to nations which have not paid their debts owing to us from the first World War? What was to be-come of the Neutrality Act, with its cash and

carry provisions? Why did President Roose-

velt turn over 50 of our destroyers to Britain

without payment? Why did the President

say that Britain was fighting our war and that our first line of defense was on the Rhine? Why was Stimson made Secretary of War? Why was Knox made Secretary of the Navy? Why did Ambassador Kennedy

resign his post as our Ambassador to Great

Britain? Why did Ambassador Bullitt who

represented us in France tell the French that if they started the war we would finish

it? Why have the American people been urged to aid Britain "short of war"? Why did President Roosevelt promise the American people that our boys would never be sent to

fight and die in a foreign war?

All these questions can be answered when

we understand that we are to become a part

of the British Empire. All news now coming

out of Washington is censored, and the peo-

ple are not told the facts. The truth is known

only to the President and those within the

inner circle handling and operating the

$7,000,000,000 of war materials which we are

giving to Britain. When the plan _for union with Britain is completed there will be no need for Britain to repay us, since the Amer-

ican people and all subjects of the British

Empire in Canada, Australia, New Zealand,

South Africa, India, Ireland, the British Isles, frice

Page 8.

They took the German saying , "Die .5onne brindt es an den Tag" and reversed it to "Der Tag bringt es an die Sonne". They repeated this phrase several times during the course of the conversation.

I don't know what to make of it, but we'll have to watch for a recurrence of this phrase for further clues to find out who "the big fellow in Washington" is.

The literal translation of Die Sonne bringt es an brings it to day". It is used to express the thought are brought into light of day by the glaring sun. In the Nazis, it means "Day brings it into light".

Is der Tag Congressman Day?
