Yes, it is that time again. We are
having soup and sweets for dinner.
Bring along your pot of soup or pavlova and join
in.
Please let Sue Spacey know what you are bringing
on 5470 5834
Margaret Winmill is our speaker.
The meeting follows which gives us a chance to
thank our outgoing committee for their great work
over the past year and to welcome in the newbies.
There is still time to nominate for a committee
position if you would like to help out. Committee
meets once per month in addition to the general
meeting.
Peggy’s Pearls
From the Library this month I have gone to extremes.
The first is a great coffee table book, Paul Bangay's
"Country Gardens". These gardens are quite beautiful but
not quite my scene. ( I suppose it could be different if I
had that sort of money.) Simon Griffiths' pictures are the usual high
standard and the write ups about each garden is very easy reading.
The second is a much different book. It is called "The Cabaret of
Plants" by Richard Mabel. There are not many illustrations but great
stories about different families of plants from primroses to sequoia. I
find this kind of book so easy to read a little, put down and pick up at a
later time. Much of interest and well written. Good stuff!
Then Barbara Maund lent me some copies of the journals of the
Mediterranean Garden Society that were passed on from Jane Cleary.
No 88 April 2017, seemed to have lots of articles written by
Australians. Perhaps it's because the new president of the society is
Caroline Davies, an Australian Garden Writer and gardener!
The article that interested me most was written by another Australian,
Julia Catton, who had gardened in England, Adelaide, Melbourne and
in Greece.
There have been some very different and sometimes extremes in her
gardening experience.
She writes about
OLD SURVIVORS----- acanthus, bay, fennel, fig, cypress, rosemary,
stone pine, & thyme.
TOLERANT TRAVELLERS------ lemon, orange, hibiscus, jasmine,
pelargoniums, & pomegranate
STYLISH TOURISTS ------pig face, agapanthus, bottlebrush,
pittosporum &a yucca.
How many of these would you be able to find in your garden?
Happy hunting,
PEGGY M
Fish and Chip Night Although a cold evening, 15 members attended our annual Fish
and Chip night. There was a mixture of meals including fish and chips, noodles and with Peggy M delighting in her choice of pizza. After a short time of social interaction, we began our trivia evening. This entailed 5 different activities for the three table groups, duly called; The Wooly Bully’s
The Sneezewort Yarrow’s The Snap Dragon’s The first activity was to identify some samples of weeds and flowers and to write a limerick about weeds. We have some very clever poets as can be seen by the following; WOOLY BULLY’S
TO CREATE A GREAT GARDEN INDEED PREVENT BIRDS FROM DROPPING THEIR SEED WE TOILED FOR LONG HOURS TO GROW ALL OUR FLOWERS BUT ALL THAT CAME UP WAS A WEED!
SNAP DRAGONS ROSES ARE RED WEEDS WEEDS GO AWAY VIOLETS ARE BLUE NEVER COME BACK ANOTHER DAY THE BIGGER THE WEED WHERE THERES A WEED THE LESS YOU FEED THERE’S A WAY! PLEASE GO PLEASE
SNEEZEWORT YARROWS
THERE WAS A GARDEN OF WEEDS THAT WAS GREAT FOR THE BIRDS FOR THEIR NEEDS BUT WHEN IT WAS HOT THE GARDEN WAS NOT AND LOTS OF THE WEEDS WENT TO SEEDS!
SALLY LEVERSHA I AM NOT IN NEED OF A WEED FOR WITH A SEED I INDEED DO NEED TO PLANT AS AGREED A FLOWER TO SUCCEED
BEV TOZER THERE WAS A YOUNG WEED WITH GREED IT ALWAYS PLANTED ITS SEED BUT ALONG CAME SOME SPRAY AND SENT IT AWAY THAT NASTY WEED, INDEED!
The group’s next task was to answer 20 Australian garden questions. This was followed by identifying, re multiple choice, 10 photos of Australian plants. Next, came Guess the Parcel with a cryptic clue to help. Finally, the groups had to guess 10 Victorian towns and places from cryptic questions Eg A singular band with sounds like could…….. A place to stack a pig………. Final resting place for all trees……..
(answers at end of article) Competition was close all night with Sneezeworts leading for most of the night, but after the last activity, the Wooly Bullys came home by ½ point to win overall. Each table was able to take home some smarties though as prizes were given out for each activity. Thanks to those who attended and thanks to my partner in Trivia – our esteemed President, Sally. Judy Eastwood Answers: Ringwood, Pakenham, Woodend.
