Report: 1 for All Campaign

Auburn University at Montgomery - “Spread the First”

Eunyoung Kim, Ph.D.Department of CommunicationAuburn University at Montgomery

I. Objectives

That the campaign enhance visibility and understanding of the First Amendment and its freedoms, targeting the campus of AUM.

That the university students understand the nature of First Amendment with an experience of publishing their own articles for AUMnibus.

That public relations students learn how to conduct and promote the campaign theming the First Amendment.

III. Planning the campaign

1. Conducting the “Spread the First” campaign Students in Public Relations I course were asked to conduct the plan for the campus-wide

campaign including picking up a topic, planning details of the event, and creating media release.

o Through discussions, students picked the theme of the campaign, “Spread the First.”

Journalism and AUMnibus (the campus newspaper) staffs were asked to support the campaign before and during the event.

2. Media Release (Pitching the release by October 2, 2019) Each student in Public Relations I course created a media release for the event and

pitched it to a local news media such as Montgomery Advertiser, AL.com, WSFA, and WCOV.

3. Promotion and Preparation Poster

o Students created flyers including details, deadlines, contact information and prize information about the “Spread the First” contest and passed them out to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Social Mediao Students contacted to the Communication Department to discuss posting social

o They also reached out to campus organizations to spread awareness and ask support. Especially, AUM LIVE (the communication club) helped promoting the events and the writing competition.

III. Writing Content (Submission by October 11, 2019) AUM students were invited to participate in writing an article for AUMnibus as a guest

writer (Please find the poster as an appendix 1). Writing format will be both of traditional and social media article. As giving students the

chance to have their opinions published in the AUMnibus not only allows them to understand the importance of the first amendment but also help to educate future students.

o Topics for the writing were 1) opinion or experience involving the First Amendment, 2) one thing that has changed or improved at AUM and made a positive impact to the campus overall, and 3) one thing that needs to be changed or removed at AUM because it is negatively impacting the campus overall.

o Total eight writing entries were submitted, and three top writings were awarded gift-card prizes.

IV. Promotional Events from September 30 to October 3, 2019 Banner interview with AUM students on Quad

o The banner was presented on Quad on the last week of September in 2019.o AUM students on campus were invited to write short statements on the banner

about what the First Amendment means to them. To promote the campaign and events, students in PR I class distributed souvenirs on campus.

Trivia Quiz Relay (October 3, 2019)o 9 students in different majors signed up for the trivial quiz relay. Students in

Public Relations I stationed at several locations on campus to give out questions about the First Amendment. Participants will get a different question to ensure that they are truly learning. Participants were only allowed to use their cell phones one time during the game. Once each participant has answered the question correctly at a spot, they were given the next location. Through the relay game, three winners were awarded gift cards.

V. An award event on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Taylor Center 222 As the last stage of the campaign, we had an award event on October 30, 2019.

Participants of the writing content and trivia quiz relay were invited, and all faculty members in the Communication Department and staffs in other departments (for example, Athletic Communication Department and Center for Disability Services) were also invited. Through promotion, students on campus visited the conference room to celebrate the award event (Please find some pictures attached in the appendix 2).

More than 60 people gathered and celebrated the event. The first place winner was Madison Culp (Pre pharmacy major), and the topic of her

writing was “How do you exercise your right to free speech when you can’t speak?”
