Goal: To share with school personnel a variety of behavioral and social emotional learning strategies that can be used in a Multi-Tiered System of Support for students.

JauNae HangerChildren’s Policy and Law Initiative of Indiana

• CPLI is a statewide organization that works collaboratively with public policy officials, legislators, child advocates, educators and the public to reform laws, policies and practices that lead to the criminalization of children.

• CPLI is the Indiana member of the National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN), working with over 50 organizations across the nation to reform juvenile justice practices.

The focus of our work:

• Public policy education and civic engagement to reform child policy and practices to be positive, strength-based and child-centered;

• Professional development activities to reform school-based cultures to embrace positive learning environments;

• Advocacy at local, state and federal levels to change laws that criminalize youthful behavior and lead to excessive juvenile justice and criminal justice involvement; and

• Facilitation of coalitions and consensus on research-based, best practices to achieve age-appropriate, developmentally-appropriate, humane treatment of children in all child-serving systems.

JauNae HangerChildren’s Policy and Law Initiative of Indiana

Positive School Discipline Institute:

• Launched in 2017-18 School Year with 17 Schools and/or Districts Participating

• Year-long training initiative with 4 Sessions Held, Offered Training by Role—Administrator, Teacher, Law Enforcement Officer—on trauma-informed practices, culturally-responsive practices, restorative practices, de-escalation, classroom management strategies for diverse student bodies, neuroscience, and cross-disciplinary understanding of juvenile justice.

• Training jumpstarts teams in school that work on collaborative plan to implement and apply learned strategies school-wide.

• Led by National Best Practice Trainer, Jim Sporleder, the former principal featured in documentary Paper Tigers. Check out trailer: https://kpjrfilms.co/paper-tigers/.

• Training is helping to reduce suspension rates, and bring about improved student engagement.

• CPLI is now planning for a second cohort of schools for the 2018-19 school year, and plans are now underway to create a Train the Trainer Program for schools. For more information contact: jhanger@wapleshanger.com.

• Coordinate Mental Health Services and support for the district

• Supervise School Counseling Program at the District Level

• Act as the liaison with other mental health providers, the city, and other entities

• Provide professional development to schools in regards to mental health, trauma informed care, and student support

• Oversee all student risk assessments
