Community Report FALL 2017 I’m excited to look back on my first year as MTC’s Executive Director! We mentored more students than ever over the last year thanks to a record number of mentors, and continued tutoring students in both elementary and middle schools. A big thank-you to our wonderful volunteers who chose to “invest” their free time in our future generation! Mentors and mentees had a great outing at Cucina Bambini Cooking School, where we cooked (some for the first time!), ate and bonded. Responding to mentor suggestions, we continued quarterly mini-trainings on mentoring topics. This year we plan to host joint sessions for tutors and mentors both. Welcome to our newest well-qualified and enthusiastic staff members: Christy Flahavan, our first ever Middle School Tutor Coordinator, and Ann Wolff, our Los Altos High School Mentor Program Manager. (Learn more about them on page 2) We were one of 20 organizations invited to receive free of charge, a two-day training on social sector Ethics presented by Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the Markkula Center of Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. As we view decision-making through this lens, we hope it enhances trust in us and promotes fundraising from within our community. Finally, a big thank you to our donors, without whom we could not carry out our mission and work in the community! I’m excited to look back on my first year as MTC’s Executive Director! • We mentored more students than ever

over the last year thanks to a record number of mentors, and continued tutoring students in both elementary and middle schools. A big thank-you to our wonderful volunteers who chose to “invest” their free time in our future generation!

• Mentors and mentees had a great outing at Cucina Bambini Cooking School, where we cooked (some for the first time!), ate and bonded. Responding to mentor suggestions, we continued quarterly mini-trainings on mentoring topics. This year we plan to host joint sessions for tutors and mentors both.

• Welcome to our newest well-qualified and enthusiastic staff members: Christy Flahavan, our first ever Middle School Tutor Coordinator, and Ann Wolff, our Los Altos High School Mentor Program Manager. (Learn more about them on page 2)

• We were one of 20 organizations invited to receive free of charge, a two-day training on social sector Ethics presented by Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the Markkula Center of Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. As we view decision-making through this lens, we hope it enhances trust in us and promotes fundraising from within our community.

• Finally, a big thank you to our donors, without whom we could not carry out our mission and work in the community!

Mentoring program cooking school field trip Tutor with a student

By Padma Gargeya

Ann WolffAs a long time volunteer in the school system, and with a background in social work, Ann believes fervently in the power of a mentor to guide, open doors, and support students in our community who are at a disadvantage. She feels it was an easy transition from being a volunteer with MTC to becoming a staff member.

Christy FlahavanChristy was drawn to MTC because she admires the partnership MTC is fostering in our community. She feels it is wonderful to work for an organization that matches talented, dedicated adults with children that can truly benefit from their support. She has seen the success of the program firsthand and is proud to be part of this endeavor.
