Metro-North Railroad – Who We Are

• Metro-North provides service across 384 route miles to

121 stations serving seven New York counties and two

Connecticut counties

• Metro-North is a subsidiary of the Metropolitan

Transportation Authority o Founded in 1983 when the MTA assumed control of Conrail

commuter operations in the states of New York and

Connecticut

o Recognized as one of the nation's preeminent railroads.

• Through continuous service and infrastructure

improvements, Metro-North has improved its system-

wide on-time performance from 80% to 97.7% and

doubled its annual ridership to 82 million (2011 data)

Metro-North Service in the

Bronx

• 253 Metro-North weekday trains

• Total weekday boardings are approximately 13,200, three times

1985 volumes

o One of the fastest growing Metro-North markets

o Approximately two-thirds of the Bronx boardings are outbound

trips to the northern suburbs

• Metro-North connects 5,000 Bronx residents to suburban jobs

o Largest rail reverse-commute market in the United States

o Many of these riders start their trip in the eastern Bronx

o One fare zone for all Bronx Stations

• Provides connections for other types of trips – shopping,

recreational, etc.

Penn Station Access

• Metro-North is currently performing a Federal

Environmental Assessment for the introduction of its

rail service from its Hudson and New Haven Lines to

Penn Station, New York

• Involves four (4) stations in the East Bronx and two

(2) stations on the West Side of Manhattan

• New Haven Line service to Penn Station could be

introduced upon the opening of LIRR East Side

Access service to Grand Central Terminal

• Expected completion of Environmental

Assessment – 2013

Community-based station:

• Serves the Parkchester and Van Nest neighborhoods

• Possibilities for intermodal connections to NYC Bus services such as the Bx 42, Bx 40 and Bx 22

• Includes the following features: o Center island, high-level platform, with a pedestrian overpass to

the station from East Tremont Avenue

o Access for the disabled per the Americans with Disabilities Act

o Ample parking for bicycles

o Multi-modal transfer area

o No automobile parking

Benefits of Penn Station Access to

Parkchester/Van Nest

The initiation of Metro-North service to Parkchester/Van Nest would:

• Introduce convenient one-seat ride rail access between Parkchester/Van Nest and Manhattan’s West Side

• Introduce direct rail service to Parkchester/Van Nest employers from communities along the New Haven Line in Westchester and Connecticut

• Introduce direct rail service from the Parkchester and Van Nest communities to suburban employment centers in Westchester and Connecticut

• Provide fast travel times from Parkchester/Van Nest to Manhattan and along the New Haven Line:

o From Parkchester/Van Nest Station to Penn Station –

approximately 20 minutes

o From Parkchester/Van Nest Station to Stamford – approximately 35 minutes

• Support future development in the Parkchester/Van

Nest area • Use existing Amtrak tracks • Require no private property takings
