At the Oct. 5 meeting of the Mt.Laurel Township Council, thetownship held the first readingfor an ordinance to reduce speedon Beaver Avenue.

The proposed change woulddrop the speed limit from 35 mphto 25 mph.

The change comes as part of anagreement reached with the plan-ning board and developers of the

Wal-Mart and Lifetime Fitnesscenter located by the intersectionof Fellowship Road and Route 73.

Residents have previouslyvoiced concerns with the poten-tial increase in traffic the projectcould bring to the area, which al-ready sees a high volume duringpeak times.

In the past, residents have alsovoiced concerns that Beaver Av-

enue would be used as a cut-through to Route 73, despite localordinances already in place thatprohibit traffic from cuttingthrough neighborhoods.

According to the ordinance in-troduced at the Oct. 5 meeting, the township engineer has con-curred with a speed study of thearea and recommends the pro-posed change.

“Part of the Wal-Mart and Life-time Fitness site plan was to putspeed humps in, and when you

put speed humps in, you have tolower the speed limit,” TownshipManager Maureen Mitchell said.“It’s designed to slow trafficthrough there so people don’t cutthrough.”

A public hearing for the ordi-nance, during which members of the public may speak about theproposed change, will be held atcouncil’s Oct. 27 meeting.

In other news:• Mitchell said the township

would also be applying for a grantunder the state Department of Transportation fiscal year 2016savings program.

Under recommendation fromthe township engineer, the town-ship will be applying for funds toimprove a portion of Union MillRoad from Walton Avenue to Brig-gs Road.

There was a time when LasVegas was a struggling gam-bling resort town. During the

economic crisis of the mid-2000s, peo-ple had less money to frivolouslyspend – and the money they did haveto frivolously spend wasn’t going to-

ward casino gambling.Casino revenue fell, and casinos

along the Strip were in trouble. And then, casino and hotel execu-

tives had an idea. They stopped focus-ing on gambling and started focusingon other entertainment attractions.

In addition to building exquisiteshopping centers, luxury pools andspas, fine dining establishments andnightclubs, hotels began signing upmusical performers who attracted bigaudiences to long-term deals.

Caesars Palace inked a three-yeardeal with Celine Dion in 2002 that hadher performing five nights a week atits venue. Motley Crue signed a simi-lar deal at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casi-no, and Britney Spears did the same at

    Planet Hollywood.

The idea worked. Tickets to theseshows are in high demand, and thevisitors to Las Vegas for the showsspend money at other attractions – and gambling – at Las Vegas casinos.

Naturally, our lawmakers in NewJersey think this is a good idea, andthey want to bring it to Atlantic City. They already followed in Vegas’ foot-

steps with the dining, nightlife, shop-ping and revitalization of the town, sowhy not piggyback on the entertain-ment residency idea?

A state Senate committee approveda new bill last week, dubbed the “Brit-ney Bill,” that would exempt stars whoplay at least four nights in AtlanticCity from having to pay state incometaxes on all shows they play in New

    Jersey.Senate Republican Leader Tom

Kean, who co-sponsored the bill, saidhe believes Atlantic City can “trans-form into a premier entertainmentdestination,” and this bill would helpit do that. More than 50,000 fans paid

to see Maroon 5 in Atlantic City thispast August, and Kean believes peoplewould flock to the city from all over tosee other A-listers, if it were the onlyplace they would play.

New Jersey Policy Perspective’shead says it’s a waste of money, andthat star entertainers don’t pick ven-ues based on whether they have to paytaxes. We agree that these A-listersprobably pick venues off how manytickets they can sell, but if AtlanticCity really can be an entertainmentdestination that sells 50,000 tickets to aconcert, and if a tax incentive pro-gram like this would indeed help to at-tract more A-listers, then what is thedownside? Sure, we’d lose the tax rev-enue, but we’d gain all the visitors.

    in our opinion

The Beau Institute of Perma-nent and Corrective Cosmeticscreated “The Beau National Day of Hope” to give back to women andoffer them a complimentary areo-la complex tattooing procedure,

in benefitting from this service, should call the Beau Institute at(888) 763-2328 to find out moreabout the areola complex tattoo-ing or visit Beau on the web atwww.beauinstitute.com.

“It’s our way of giving back,”said Rose Marie Beauchemin, thefounder and director of educationof the Beau Institute of Perma-nent and Corrective Cosmeticsand creator of the Beau NationalDay of Hope. “The Day of Hope isa time where other practitionersand I will be working on breastcancer survivors that have hadmastectomies and have not com-pleted the process of the nippleand areola tattooing.

“So many women who undergosuch traumatic surgery and treat-ments [for breast cancer] chooseto end the process once they’re

healthy, because they simply can’thandle one more thing. They’rein need of the areola tattooing, and are possibly without a nipplegraft, so we will tattoo a three-di-mensional nipple and areola tocreate a totally realistic effect andto help them feel complete. Theywill once again be able to experi-ence their senses of wholenessand beauty in femininity.”

This year the institute is alsoworking with Hearts UnitedAgainst Cancer and Mother’s
