For about a year we've beenselling a French rat trap thatwill catch as many as nine ratsat one seance. Some people, those who have good dogs, pre-fer this trap because it pro-vides amusement for the canine as well as the owner, therats being caught alive. Theonly objection to this sort oftrap is the price. People whohave no particular interest inlive rats objected to the priceof the French process of catch-ing them. A cheaper variety, and a most excellent one, iscalled the ''Little Giant," whichis bound to kill every rat ormouse that sticks his noseagainst the bait. We have setsix traps in a night and founda dead rat in each one thenext morning. They are reallyvery good and cheap.

Honolulu is very much likesome cities in the Unitedstates. At least one clay inthe week the whole town is onwheels. It don't make muchdifference whether your horseis good, bail or indifferent awhip and a cheap article isworthless. We have recentlyadded some very good ones toour stock which we sell at rea-sonable prices; you cannot failto be pleased with the one youget of us.
Is it worth while saying any-thing more about the Joneslocked fence? It is growingin favor so rapidly that everyone seems to know that it isreally the best fence to set up.The economy of building andstrength after it is erected arethe two points that sell it. Inthe numerous letters we havehad from people who haveused it there is not a line or aword in contradiction of ourstatements. People who buy atrial lot of stays and washersalways send in a second order. We are making a specialty ofthis fence because we have hadencouragement from the peopie who are using it; we areconvinced that it is the bestand most economical fencemade.

Tho kotm storm, which ha boonbrowing (or sovtiral wooks, lniallybroke out on Uu night or last Wuil-ncsda- y,

A heavy thunderstorm raged duringtho night of Thursday, with terrificclaps of thunder and brilliant flashesof lightning. Friday morning thosummit of vonerable Haleakala wascovered with a dazzling mantle ofsnow, which still remains. At pres-ent writing it is eloso and sultrj, with no wind, but rainy and with in-dications of another storm. Thorain was very welcome ami tho plan-ters would not bo displeased to seemoro of it.
Tho Hov. Father Theodore Lautordied of hcart-di.cii'- o at tho CatholicMission in Wailuku yesterday, andwas buried at 7 a. tn. to-da- Satur-day. Deceased, who was a native ofGermany, was for many years thepriest of liana Catholic Church, andwas about f2 years of ago at thetime of his death.

Taxation Without Uoprosontntion.
Kditoii Hi'lixtin: -On the I5tli inst., last Thursday
night, a meeting was held by tlieWailuku Auuexatlou Club for thepurpose of nominating candidatesfor the local Itoad Hoard. Messrs.C. U. Wells and .Ino. W. Kalua ofWailuku, and C. M. Walton or Wai-he- e,
were uoiuiuated by tho meeting, from which wereexcluded, or at least denied thenrivilcuo of votimr.
Now, while these gentlemen arewell known residents, and would .probable make tt competent boartl.it Iwould hardly seem fair to have them iappointed on the nomination oi asmall minority of the tax payingresidents of the district, as the an-nexation club virtually is.
Why not give the other taxpayersa show? Their votes would pro-bably be given to (he present mem-bers of the board Messrs. II. Center,A. Barnes and 12. li. Frio!, whohave given great satisfaction duringtheir incumbency and greatly Im-proved the rouds in tho district; anilit looks like the blackest ingratitudeto oust Mr. Center particularly, asho has geiierotihly allowed the plan-tation railroad to cart several thou-sand loads of soil gratuitously on totho shockingly bad piece of roadbetween Kahului and Wailuku, thereby converting a stretch whichhas always been the terror of way-farers into a beautiful driveway, be-sides oireriug other material assist-ance to the board. Hut then, grati-tude doc not enter into politics, andthis move is ohvioiinly made forpolitical reason, ami to enable thejiarty to appea-- o the hunger of oneor more of their loudest kicker-wit-
tlie billets as secretary andsujiorviiMir.
Why is it suddenly deemed neces-sary to hold elections of road boardsnow, anuvay, and why, if it is neces-sary, are not all taxpayers requestedto vote?
The decree of the present govern-ment directing an election is sup-ported by tin uocort lou that the lawrequires it, as the term has expired.Hut what of the election of
ha not their term ex-pired also, and does not the law re-quire an election now in their case
The fact is that we are now enjoy-ii-the inestimable blemiug of taxi-lio- n
without , andthat this country is ruled liy annexa-tion clubs while taxpayers of a dif-ferent political creett have no voieoin their own local affairs even, butmay grin and bear it.
Kamaaina.
