i can almost smell the hot cross buns toasting under the grill and taste those yummy lindt bunnies, even those fluffy marshmallows are looking pretty good right now! that’s right folks, easter is around the corner. it’s time to abandon the Banting for four whole days and be completely and utterly decadent. Welcome to the easter edition of living the Good life.

earth hour is upon us once again. it started in 2007 as a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. over 160 countries around the world participate in this event. this year it takes place on Saturday, 28 March 2015 from 8pm to 9pm. to be honest, without being all doom and gloom, i think with load shedding, i’ll be switched off anyway.

those of you who frequent the community centres will know how clear and pristine our pools are looking. this is all thanks to a company called Crystal Clear. if you would like your own pool at home to look this bright, you should contact these fellows. there is an article further along for your information.

happy Passover to our Jewish residents who celebrate Pesach on 4th & 5th April and 10th & 11th April ~ Wishing you joy and many blessings at Passover and throughout the year! it’s Mothers day on the 10th May ~ i hope you all get spoilt with breakfast in bed, flowers, spa treatments and extra lindt choccies. to all the moms out there, you know you are the best!

Well, that’s me for now so i suggest you pour yourself a cup of tea, toast that bun and curl up on your favourite chair. i’m ready to keep you company for the next hour.

Best regards

Greetings. i think that as South Africans, we are all a little “shell-shocked” at the moment. What with load shedding, chaos in parliament and now spy vs spy correspondence emerging, we tend to focus more on the negative. We are bombarded with pessimism and disappointment at every turn and forget about the abundance of positives that surround us. this is also true of community living.

in a 2012 national Survey conducted in the USA, residents were asked to rate the following:• On a scale of one to five, with one being very bad and five being excellent, how would you rate your overall experience living on a community association?• Do you think the members of your Board strive to serve the best interests of the community as a whole?• Does the Community Manager provide value and support to residents and the community as a whole?• Do the rules in your community protect and enhance property values, harm them or make no difference?• Would you like to see more government control of Associations?• Did the fact that your current home is in a Community Association make you more likely to purchase, make you hesitant about purchasing or have no impact?

• Considering your overall levy and the service provided by your association, how would you describe the return for what you pay in levies?

The results of the survey showed that:

• residents rate their overall community association experience as positive by almost 9:1

• Board members do strive to serve the best interest of their communities

• Community Managers do provide value and support to associations

• residents believe overwhelmingly that association rules protect property values

• homeowners value the return they get for their levies

• residents don’t want additional government intervention in their communities

it would be interesting to do a similar national survey in South Africa and it is possible that ArC would consider this. i have no doubt that the results would be similar and prove that with all the doom and gloom around, there are plenty of positives to calling an estate like Mount edgecombe two, home.

Until next time, let’s all try to remain optimistic!(Data obtained from the Communities Association

Institute, USA)

I s a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? What about an avocado pear, fruit or veg? i was debating this around a table with my mates and there were conflicting views on the

matter. therefore, i did what i do best; investigated the subject. i found this tasty little morsel of information enlightening.

A peach is a fruit, whoever you are, and a carrot is definitely a vegetable. In the Venn diagram relating these two produce categories, there's a sizeable region of overlap. it results from the fact that “fruit” and “vegetable” are defined differently depending on whether you're a gardener or a chef.

dead centre of the overlapping region sits the tomato. So, why is it a fruit, and why is it a vegetable?Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems. By those standards, seedy outgrowths such as apples, squash and, yes, tomatoes are all

fruits, while roots such as beets, potatoes and turnips, leaves such as spinach, kale and lettuce, and stems such as celery and broccoli are all vegetables.

the outlook is quite different in culinary terms, however. Many foods that are (botanically speaking) fruits, but which are savoury rather than sweet, are typically considered vegetables by chefs. this includes such botanical fruits as eggplants, bell peppers and tomatoes.

the answer to this question is actually a bit complicated, thanks to some disagreements among botanists about the term “vegetable” and the efforts of the grocery industry, which have further clouded the difference between fruits and vegetables. Simply put, a fruit is the ovary of a plant, which means that it may contain seeds, while a vegetable is a plant part, which does not contain seeds, although some vegetables may be used in plant reproduction.

Some examples of fruits include well-known specimens like apricots, cherries,

blueberries, and apples, but tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, and zucchini are considered to be fruits botanically, even though many people refer to these fruits as “vegetables” because they are savoury, rather than sweet. this is the result of convenience labelling used in the grocery industry, where fruits and vegetables differentiate based on whether they are sweet or savoury, rather than with the use of any firm botanical criteria.

A vegetable, on the other hand, is simply a plant part like a flower, stem, root, or leaf. Broccoli, for example is a vegetable that appears in the form of a flower, while celery is a stalk vegetable, and celeriac is a root vegetable. Vegetables like potatoes are technically tubers, not roots, meaning that they are specially designed plant structures that store nutrients for the parent plant; tubers are also capable of budding into new plants. Some examples of leaf vegetables include spinach, cabbage, and lettuce.

the difference between fruits and vegetables should be fairly clear now; basically, if it has seeds, it's a fruit, and if it doesn't, it's a vegetable. however, there are some interesting little facts about fruit that may interest you; for example, all nuts are technically fruits, in addition to being classified as nuts, because they are plant ovaries. in the case of nuts, instead of eating the fleshy casing that surrounds the seed, we eat the seed. Grains are also fruits, because they are simply oversized seeds.

Some botanists also dislike the term “vegetable,” because they consider it rather vague and imprecise, and they would prefer it if crops were not arbitrarily broken up into the categories of fruits and vegetables. however, this nomenclature is likely here to stay, imperfect as it may be, so botanical sticklers may want to get used to hearing “fruits and vegetables” when produce is under discussion.

So, what is the only fruit that has its seeds on the outside? i’ll let you stew over that shall i.

I t is almost a year since management decided on installing self-cleaning salt chlorinators at our three community pools. the results have been fantastic!!

Many of our residents will be familiar with pool chlorinators of all makes, shapes and sizes. it was with some scepticism and even trepidation that Charles Sturgess (Planning and Aesthetics Manager) agreed to a trial installation over the busy easter break with a new company that design, manufacture and supply state of the art chlorinators. the decision to install the units at Greenbrier, Crystal downs and Southern Hills pools was justified mainly by consideration of the environmental benefits and consistent high quality of the community pool water promised by the supplier. the fact that it has been a good commercial decision is an important added bonus.

Jovivista (Pty) ltd – trading as Crystal Clear Chlorinators – supplied and installed the units and whilst not their intended business, agreed to a maintenance contract whereby our pools would be manually

swept 3 times per week. the arrangement has been beneficial to both parties and the big test of the pools all being crystal clear over the busy and hot Christmas break has resulted in both parties happily renewing the contract.

estate Manager terry Keller commented: “We are happy to recommend both the product and the supplier based on our overall experience with the community pools”.

Crystal Clear Chlorinators representative Mthokozisi Zibane pronounced proudly “there are few pleasures in business that can beat having happy customers…”

Crystal Clear Chlorinators are installed at numerous resorts and private residences throughout the country and Jovivista pride themselves on supporting a product that has the most competitive warranty on the cell and is reasonably priced. the maintenance team is able to respond to any problems with the product within 24 hours (anywhere in the country).

wHAT ARE THE BEnEfITS of InSTALLIng A cHLoRInAToR oTHER THAn MERELy coST?installing salt-water pool systems should not be for the sole purpose of saving money. it should be for the increased swimmer comfort. having said this, significant savings can be made and it takes about 2-3 years for a domestic pool and 1 to 2 years for a commercial pool before the system pays for itself.

The best thing about the pool should be the water. The added benefits of installing salt chlorinators are:• You can “Set and Forget”• Chlorine production is set by you at the

control panel• Chemical levels can be significantly

reduced – this reduces red eyes, skin irritation and unpleasant odours.

• no risk of bleached bathing suits or the dreaded green hair!

• the sparkle and crystal clear freshness of the water is enhanced

• there is no need to purchase expensive algaecides, nor is there any risk of storing liquid chlorine

• no need for weekly shock treatments

Uncommon visitors

g ardens belonging to residents here on the estate usually attract certain varieties of birds on a regular basis. Placing a

bird feeder in the garden helps to attract common seed-eaters such as mannikins, bishops and weavers. then of course there are those varieties of birds that visit when our trees are fruiting or when the shrubs and plants in our garden are flowering. occasionally we may be fortunate enough to spot an unusual visitor to our garden. in turn, we may find that birds that used to visit our gardens on a regular basis no longer do so.

Pictures 1 to 4 show an example of a bird that used to frequent our own garden but then suddenly stopped coming altogether. it is an open-billed stork and two of them used to visit us on a regular basis. these birds are typically birds of marshes, swamps and lakes where they feed on molluscs. Although open-billed storks were once a common sight all around the estate, i personally have not seen one here in over two years. Picture 1 shows one of the birds perched on sticks in the dam in front of our home. the pair of storks regularly waded through the shallows in search of freshwater mussels and snails and would thereafter check our garden

for snails. the unusual bill is specialised for extraction of snails from their shells and pictures 2-4 show just how deftly the open-billed stork is able to extricate a snail from its shell. this is not done by using the bill as a set of nutcrackers with the snail held in the opening of the bill. instead, the open-billed stork steadies the snail with its upper mandible and then the tip of the lower mandible (which is extremely sharp) is used to slip under the bony shell that protects the snail. the lower mandible is then used to cut the muscle holding the snail in place and the body is extracted whole for immediate consumption. needless to say we never experienced any problems with garden snails during the period when the birds visited us.

i took picture 5 on 20th october 2014 of a crested guinea fowl. The bird had flown into our neighbour’s garden and was running up and down his fence trying to find a way out again. i snapped a few pictures over the fence between our two properties and phoned him so that he could have a look at it. the bird was moving rapidly so i was unable to take any good quality pictures. Whilst the neighbour went to fetch his camera the guinea fowl hopped up into a tree on his property and then flew off

demonstrating that it was actually able to fly quite strongly. Crested guinea fowl are found from Central Africa to KwaZulu-natal. i have never again seen the crested guinea fowl here on the estate. i only see the resident helmeted guinea fowls on occasions.

i saw the european roller shown in picture 6 on 5th november 2014 here on the estate. i had never before seen one here and have not seen one again since. it is listed in bird books as a fairly common summer visitor and is often found singly. the species has apparently undergone moderately rapid declines across its global range and it is consequently considered “near threatened”. the european roller migrates vast distances between continents. From the breeding grounds of Europe and Asia the roller flies over 10,000 km to sub Saharan Africa repeating the mammoth journey again in spring. it is somewhat different in colouring to the lilac-breasted roller which many of us are accustomed to seeing in game reserves particularly Kruger national Park.

Because of the great diversity on the estate, it is quite possible that birds which are seldom seen in our own areas or gardens could very well be regular visitors or even common to someone else’s area or garden.

T hanks to medical and drug research, there are thousands of drugs that help people. Antibiotics and vaccines have revolutionized the treatment

of infections. Medicines can lower blood pressure, treat diabetes, and reduce the body's rejection of new organs. Medicines can cure, slow, or prevent disease, helping us to lead healthier and happier lives. however, there are also many illegal, harmful drugs that people take to help them feel good or have a good time.

Although substances can feel good at first, they can ultimately do a lot of harm to the body and brain. drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, taking illegal drugs, and sniffing glue can all cause serious damage to the human body. Some drugs severely impair a person's ability to make healthy choices

and decisions. Again, this isn’t a sermon to tell you not to do drugs, because you probably will anyway. this is an outline, and education if you will, on what is out there so you can make informed choices on what you take. i have already featured several popular drugs and if you wish to read those articles, please drop me a line and i will happily forward them to you. You are our future, so make wise choices.

BATH SALTSthe manmade cathinone products sold as “bath salts” should not be confused with epsom salt, the original bath salts - a mineral mixture of magnesium and sulphate and are added to bathwater to help ease stress and relax muscles. these “Bath salts” is the name given to a family of drugs that have one or more manmade chemicals related to cathinone. Cathinone

is an amphetamine-like stimulant found naturally in the khat plant. Chemically, they are similar to other amphetamines such as methamphetamine and to MdMA (ecstasy or Molly). Common manmade cathinones found in bath salts include methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MdPV), mephedrone (“drone,” “Meph,” or “Meow Meow”), and methylone, but there are many others. Bath salts are usually white or brown crystal-like powder and are sold in small plastic or foil packages labelled “not for human Consumption.” it is also sometimes labelled as “plant food”, “jewellery cleaner” or “phone screen cleaner”. they are sold online and in drug product stores. these names or descriptions have nothing to do with the product. it’s a way for the drug makers to avoid detection by the drug enforcement Administration or local police. other street

wHAT do PEoPLE ExPERIEncE wHEn THEy TAkE BATH SALTS? the effects can include agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, chest pain, increased pulse, high blood pressure, and suicidal thinking/behaviour. Suicidal thinking/behaviour may last even after the stimulatory effects of the drugs have worn off.

they are central nervous system stimulants that produce a feeling of euphoria and often extraordinary strength for three to four hours, followed by a period of psychosis, violence, suicidal thoughts, seizures, tremors, paranoia, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and other issues that can linger for days or even weeks, officials say. Because the drugs are relatively new, their long-term effects on the body are unknown. According to the national institute on drug Abuse, they are highly addictive. the illegal drugs can be manufactured as a powder or crystal, in white to light brown. they sometimes have a slight odour that has been described as “bad feet.” they can be sprinkled into food and drink and consumed orally, snorted, injected, smoked, or inhaled in a mist.

wHAT ARE BATH SALTS?Bath Salts are substituted cathinones, which are synthetic, concentrated versions of the stimulant chemical in Khat. Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MdPV), mephedrone and methylone are the chemicals most often found in Bath Salts.

wHAT doES IT Look LIkE?Bath Salt products are sold in powder form in small plastic or foil packages of 200 and 500mg under various brand names. Mephedrone is a fine white, off-white or slightly yellow-colored powder. it can also be found in tablet and capsule form. MdPV is a fine white or off-white powder. K2 is typically sold in small, silvery plastic bags of dried leaves and marketed as incense that can be smoked. it is said to resemble potpourri.

How IS IT USEd?Bath Salts are usually ingested by sniffing/snorting. they can also be taken orally,

smoked, or put into a solution and injected into veins.

wHAT ARE ITS SHoRT TERM EffEcTS?Short-term effects include severe paranoia, suicidal thoughts, agitation, combative/violent behavior, confusion, hallucinations/psychosis, increased heart rate, hypertension, chest pain, death or serious injury. the speed of onset is 15 minutes, while the length of the high from these drugs is 4-6 hours.

dAngERS of USIng “BATH SALTS” foR dRUg USEStandard hospital treatment for drug overdose does not work effectively on “Bath Salts.” even when patients come off of sedation, behavior has been shown to revert back to the uncontrollable state of psychosis. As a warning to young people experimenting with this drug, the effects of “Bath Salts” may be permanent. Cases of violent suicide are numerous and growing fatalities are reported to Poison Control authorities. For all intents and purposes, this drug is extremely toxic and may result in permanent brain damage. the chemical ingredients found in “Bath Salts” are also found in various forms of insecticide, as well as chemical treatment programs designed to kill aqueous algae and fungus. Further research is required in order to determine the long-term effects of using this drug and how to effectively sedate patients suffering from toxic psychotic states.

Use of bath salts sometimes causes severe intoxication (a person seems very drunk or “out of it”) and dangerous health effects. there are also reports of people becoming psychotic (losing touch with reality) and violent. Although it is rare, there have been several cases where bath salts have been the direct cause of death.

in addition, people who believe they are taking drugs such as MdMA (Molly or ecstasy) may be getting bath salts instead. Methylone, a common chemical in bath salts, has been substituted for MdMA in capsules sold as Molly in some areas.

w ith winter approaching, (that sounds so strange, considering that we were dying of heat just the other day!)

i thought it pertinent to chat about the difference between a cold and flu. We have an idea what the difference is, yet we continue to say “I’ve got the flu” when actually what we have is a common cold. this article explains it beautifully.

When you wake up sneezing, coughing, and have that achy, feverish, can't move a muscle feeling, how do you know whether you have cold symptoms or the flu?

it's important to know the difference between flu and cold symptoms. A cold is a milder respiratory illness than the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia and hospitalizations.

what are common cold symptoms?Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two. nasal symptoms, runny nose, and congestion follow, along with a cough by the fourth and fifth days. Fever is uncommon in adults, but a slight fever is possible. Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold.

With cold symptoms, the nose teems with watery nasal secretions for the first few days. later, these become thicker and darker. dark mucus is natural and does not usually mean you have developed a bacterial infection, such as a sinus infection. Several hundred different viruses may cause your cold symptoms.

How long do cold symptoms last?Cold symptoms usually last about a week. During the first three days that you have cold symptoms, you are contagious. this means you can pass the cold to others, so stay home, and get some much-needed rest.

Mount EdgEcoMbE country club - Estate two | 17

Page 18: Mt edgecombe march april 2015 issue 69

18 | Mount EdgEcoMbE country club - Estate two

if cold symptoms don’t improve after a week, you may have a bacterial infection, which means you may need antibiotics. Sometimes one may mistake cold symptoms for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) or a sinus infection. if cold symptoms begin quickly and are improving after a week, then it is usually a cold, not allergy. if your cold symptoms do not seem to be getting better after a week, check with your doctor to see if you have developed an allergy or sinusitis.

What are common flu symptoms?Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms and come on quickly. Symptoms of flu include sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches, and soreness, congestion, and cough. Swine flu in particular is also associated with vomiting and diarrhoea. Most flu symptoms gradually improve over two to five days, but it's uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. A common complication of the flu is pneumonia, particularly in the young, elderly, or people with lung or heart problems. if you notice shortness of breath, let your doctor know. Another common sign of pneumonia is fever that comes back after having been gone for a day or two.

Just like cold viruses, flu viruses enter your body through the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, or mouth. every time you touch your hand to one of these areas, you could be infecting yourself with a virus, which makes it very important to keep hands germ-free with frequent washing to prevent both flu and cold symptoms.

Is it flu or cold symptoms? How do you know if I have flu or cold symptoms? take your temperature. Flu symptoms often mimic cold symptoms with nasal congestion, cough, aches, and malaise. however, a common cold rarely has symptoms of fever above 38º C. With flu symptoms, you will probably have a fever initially with the flu virus and you will feel miserable. Body and muscle aches are also more common with the flu.

When do I call the doctor with flu or cold symptoms? If you already have flu or cold symptoms, it's important to call your doctor if you also have any of the following severe symptoms:

• Persistent fever: A fever lasting more than three days can be a sign of another bacterial infection that should be treated.• Painful swallowing: Although a sore throat from a cold or flu can cause mild discomfort, severe pain could mean strep throat, which requires treatment by a doctor.• Persistent coughing: When a cough doesn't go away after two or three weeks, it could be bronchitis, which may need an antibiotic. Postnasal drip or sinusitis can also result in a persistent cough. in addition, asthma is another cause of

persistent coughing.• Persistent congestion and headaches: When colds and allergies cause congestion and blockage of sinus passages, they can lead to a sinus infection (sinusitis). if you have pain around the eyes and face with thick nasal discharge after a week, you may have a bacterial infection and possibly need an antibiotic. Most sinus infections, however, do not need an antibiotic.

in some cases, you may need to get emergency medical attention right away. in adults, signs of a crisis include:• Severe chest pain• Severe headache• Shortness of breath• dizziness• Confusion• Persistent vomiting

Can I prevent flu or cold symptoms?the most important prevention measure for preventing colds and flu is frequent hand washing. hand washing by rubbing the hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds helps to slough germs off the skin.

in addition to hand washing to prevent flu or cold symptoms, you can also get a flu vaccine to prevent seasonal influenza. Seasonal flu activity in the United States generally peaks between late december and early March. Within two weeks of getting a flu vaccine, antibodies develop in the body and provide protection against flu. Children receiving the vaccine for the first time need two doses delivered one month apart.

Antiviral medicine may also help prevent flu if you have been exposed to someone with flu symptoms.

You wake up coughing, sneezing and congested and feel as if you don’t even have enough energy to get out of bed. You are sick!

But how sick are you? While many people are able to quickly recognize that something is going through their system, many people are unable to differentiate between a common cold and influenza. The common cold and flu are different types of viral infections of the respiratory system. Because they share similar symptoms and may feel the same, it can be hard to tell them apart.

Both cold and flu viruses spread from person to person. this means that getting either a cold or the flu may be prevented by washing your hands often and avoiding close contact with anyone with a cold or the flu. If you are infected with the cold or flu virus, get plenty of rest to help fight the infection. Drinking lots of fluids is also important to stay hydrated and loosen mucus.

oUT And

ABoUTVB’s

I f you frequent Virginia Beach, you will have noticed the huge improvement made to the area. it has been cleaned up, paved and is looking first rate. Added to this, is a

delightful little diner called VB’s. My mates and i heard a lot about the place from several sources so we decided to check it out for ourselves. We were interested to see what everyone was so excited about and so each of us had the renowned burgers. As you can see in the photos, the menu is straightforward, no frills.

Basically, it’s a kitchen on wheels and is run by four enterprising young men, all with previous restaurant experience. Cameron delaney, dylan robertson, lyle Kearns and nick Potgieter merrily cook up a storm in their little nook and the aromas emanating from inside are tantalising. that’s before even tasting the food. then there’s the

presentation of the meal. A wooden board with brown paper forms the base for the burger, fries and simple salad of diced cucumber and apple drizzled in a delectable dressing. the burger itself is nestled between a toasted bun, the meaty morsel garnished with rocket and sauce of your choice. My first bite sent my taste buds into a frenzy. Folks, i can honestly say that i’m not much of a burger fan and think Comics burgers are the best, however, these guys cook up one mean mouth-watering sensation of a burger. i had the Mozambique beef burger and it was tasty. tasty is actually too tame a word to describe the scrumptious meal i had.

their trading hours vary; Mondays they are closed. tuesday to thursday, open from 9 to 5. Friday to Sunday open from 9 to 6. they serve both chicken and beef burgers,

supplied by a leading butchery, fries and

chicken strips and normal beverages. they are in the process of applying for their liquor license so watch this space. if you have pooches, they can even tag along with you and maybe after lunch, go for a walk on the beach.

VB’s opened before Christmas last year and has been filling seats ever since. overlooking the ocean, beneath the cover of bamboo poles, you will be delighted by the atmosphere. the guys themselves are fun-loving, jovial and friendly. And they sing as they cook! if you are at a loss as to what to do on a random Saturday morning, treat yourselves to a lunch at VB’s. i guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.

cHARLES kIngMA

c harles Kingma or as he’s known in our office, the Joker, is our Compliance Administrator and Community Centre Supervisor. his

responsibilities are varied and his daily chores are somewhat erratic. not only does he supervise the cleaning staff and recycling bins at the community centres, he is also tasked with ensuring our rules are complied with by our residents, contractors and visitors which means he meets new friends out there constantly, something he admits he really enjoys J.

Charlie has worked for the estate for almost five years now and was previously employed at the iCC where he was the assistant security manager in events co-ordination. When i asked him to highlight a few interesting moments, he jokingly

relates a story about being attacked by a 2kg Yorkie who thought it was a rottweiler as well as a resident who sent him a photo of her neutered dog wearing a jersey which read “i miss my balls”. Sometimes our job gives us a little more than we bargained for but it’s that element of surprise that makes working here that more appealing.

he enjoys the working environment at Meccema two where opinions matter and you’re able to have your say without offending anyone. “Being constantly faced with challenges as a team and dealing with problems fairly, makes it easier to want to stay here, which is why we have several employees who are still here after ten years of service. it’s something i hope to achieve myself. i really do love my job.”

Charlie has been happily married to elaine for 14 wonderful years and they love spending time on the beach. he is also learning how to snorkel.

rugby is his favourite sport and being an old Joburg boy, he is most definitely an avid lions supporter (ag jammer tog!) Go the ShArKS! his movie of all time is legends of the Fall and he loves rock music, especially when elaine isn’t in the car with him because then he gets to blast it! turn up that radio, Charlie.

The Centenarian

I walked through the plush air-conditioned lounge, stepped onto the cosy patio and was greeted by a delicious spread of tea, sweets and cheese scones. this however

was not the reason for my visit. i was eager to make the acquaintance of the grand woman nestled comfortably in her cushioned chair, with her snow-white hair, trimmed elegantly into a bob. She beamed up at me and i gingerly hugged her, kissing her softly on the cheek. i gently took her arthritic hands in mine and with tears in my eyes i introduced myself. “What a great honour and privilege it is to meet you, Mrs hirst.” She smiled even more at me. i took my seat and there began a most enchanting conversation. i will now share that conversation with you.

i’ll start at the beginning. Mrs Cheryl hirst of Greenbrier Village contacted me one day to tell me that her mother-in-law, Gwen hirst, was turning 100 years old and would i like to meet her. of course, i jumped at the opportunity to do an article on this great dame. now, i don’t know how many of you out there have ever met

a centenarian, but Gwen was my first and what a woman of substance she is. Gwen turned 100 on the 1st March and the family celebrated this feat with her at their home in Fairways reach.

i asked the usual questions about her everyday activities, how she keeps herself so upbeat, what she does to pass time, all the boring stuff. Gwen wasn’t having any of that, instead she took me back in time to a place she remembers vividly and most fondly, Verulam. Gwen tells of stories of growing up in Verulam and having to travel to Umdloti, where the holiday home was, by ox wagon. She recalls that the roads were so precarious, wagons often used to overturn and hurtle down the hill, its load lost or damaged. She talked of thick marshes, pristine beaches and swimming happily in the clear blue sea. She remembers that their cottage in Umdloti was one of the six in the area in those days.

Gwen went to school in Verulam and she recalls that she loved playing sports. There were no sports fields, but she used

to play cricket with the boys, as she was the only girl in the class. tennis was her favourite sport to play and to this day, she still loves tennis. Federer is her favourite star now. Gwen then speaks of a well-known lady tennis player named hine or haine and then she moans because her “silly brain” can’t recall the lady’s name. i tell her i’ll Google it. She smiles at me. this is what i found though:

the tennis player was legendary Bobbie heine Miller – she hailed from Winterton in the natal Midlands and became the natal senior champion at 15, the South African champion at 18 and at 19 was ranked 7th in the world. it took one of the greatest woman players of all time - helen Wills Moody of America to halt the young South African’s determined bid for the Wimbledon crown. She was part of the glory years, the golden years of natal tennis that she shared with two others – Billie tapscott and Margaret Morphew. Between Miller and tapscott they dominated South African women’s tennis to such an extent that only twice in the period from 1928 to 1939 did either one fail to

No, this isn’t a new sci-fi movie, nor is it an x-box game. It’s far better. This is a little marvel of a

lady steeped in so much history; it gave me goose bumps conducting a most interesting interview

with her. I found her to be delightful and utterly entertaining. This is how it went down.

win the national singles crown. Gwen, i hope you enjoyed that read and I am confident that you remember this clearly as it happened yesterday.

Gwen then recalls the malaria outbreak in 1929 in Verulam where she lost her little brother, John. Again, i investigate this and discover that from the years 1928 to 1932, over 15,000 people were victims of this horrific outbreak.

Conversation moves to eskom and power cuts and how much fun we’re having guessing if our electricity is going to be switched off today or not. Gwen laughs at me and says that in her day, they only used water tanks, coal stoves, candles and paraffin lamps. hmmm...makes me appreciate the things i have.

Gwen was twenty-eight when she married Bill, who was Chief Officer on a ship called the empire trooper which was at that time being repaired in durban. the ship had been damaged by gun fire from a German Warship off the West coast of Africa. By the time the war ended Bill had been promoted to Captain. during the Second World War she joined the navy league where she did voluntary work in the canteen serving food to the servicemen. Whilst Bill was at sea transporting troops Gwen lived in durban until the end of the war. She then went to england for a time before moving back to durban for the birth of her second son roy.

When roy was nine months old Gwen and her two sons set sail for Calcutta where Bill was stationed as Marine Superintendent for the British india Steam navigation Co. it was a six week journey from durban to Calcutta stopping at many ports along the way. they lived in Calcutta for 6 years

before returning to durban to further the children’s education.

in their earlier years, Gwen and Bill frequented a dance hall called “Cosmo” where they danced the shuffle, the waltz and the Charleston. one of their other favourite places to go dancing was a called “roadhouse” over the Umgeni Bridge. It had an open-air dance floor and a full band used to play the night away.

her favourite decades were the years she spent growing old with her husband in Umdloti. they married in 1943 and after Bill died in 1979, Gwen didn’t remarry. Bill was 55 years old when he retired and Gwen remembers fondly that her favourite years were spending them with him during the 60’s and 70’s because she had him all to herself. So romantic.

When i ask Gwen what she does to keep active, she answers that she loves doing craftwork, patchwork, crochet, she reads the newspaper daily, has physio twice a week, participates in activity classes where they exercise the old brain. Gwen smiled proudly and admits that she is always busy with a project to keep herself occupied. “My problem is, i still haven’t grown up!” she grins happily. Cheryl leaves the room at this point, returning with two toys that Gwen made a little while back and i admit i am gobsmacked. i can’t even sew a button onto a shirt, let alone make a complete teddy bear. her handiwork is flawless.

Gwen celebrated her 90th by going to Antarctica on a cruise liner named the royal Princess for a month accompanied by her eldest son Brian.

Cheryl speaks very highly of her father-in-law, Bill. “he was kind and adorable. Patient. Wonderful.” in their family, everyone gets along well, no bickering and they spend most their valuable moments as a family.

Gwen lives at Somerset lodge Care Centre which caters effectively for the elderly. She herself is still very much self-sufficient and feels blessed that she is still fit and able to do what she wants to do without the constraints that old age brings with it. “My mom always said that you must talk a lot and you will stay young!”

The greatest influences of Gwen’s life were her mom and dad. her mom always told her that she needed to keep active otherwise she’d develop a big bottom.

i ask her about any future holiday destinations, but she laughs and says that nobody will take her now!

the caterers Cheryl and roy chose to do this function were excited to put on this epic spread, their first 100th birthday! Gwen phoned her dressmaker who made the beautiful dress she’s wearing.

As the hour ticked by, Gwen highlighted so much more that happened throughout her life and remembered things as though they happened yesterday. She is articulate, full of fun, highly intelligent and vibrates energy. Joie de vivre personified. I’d like to thank the hirst family for sharing such a momentous occasion with us. happy 100th Birthday, Gwen.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson, Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles”.
