Mission Statement

“As God’s light on the hill we worship, wit-

ness, make disciples for Jesus Christ and ex-press his love to all

people.”

Pastor’s Article for August: GO BIG!

“Go BIG or Go Home” is increasingly becoming my motto in life. For me it means we give God our best gifts. We do even the smallest things BIG for God. I just visited the world’s largest Noah’s Ark last week in Williamstown, KY. This 510 foot ark is the largest timber frame structure in the world. The Ark has had a lot of criticism from anti-religious groups. They believe it

crossed the line of “separation of church and state” when the project received tax incentives to help support this $120 million tourist attraction. But founder Ken Ham believes the Ark will deliver a big boost to the local economy. Ham also hopes the Ark will be a BIG witness God’s Word which tells of His great love for the world. Is there a way to “go BIG” for God, and resist looking like materialistic culture around us? We can look at Jesus as our example. Jesus made the most of His life here on earth. Jesus made the most of every opportu-nity to teach us how to be His disciples in the world. Jesus made the most of every relationship to draw people back to God. Jesus made the most of every moment to bring glory to the Father in Heaven. Jesus was able to live His life to the fullest because He never lost sight of how BIG God’s love is for the world. Jesus promised to those who loved Him, they would do even “greater things” for God in the world. (John 14:12). I am so appreciative of the BIG things you have done for God this year: sponsoring almost a dozen pilgrims on the Emmaus Walk, sending out many mission teams, renovating the Gathering Room and Annex House, setting a goal to raise $10,000 to dig a well in Kenya, preparing meals for New Story Homeless Shelter, win-ning the Super Bowl Food Drive contest, making the most book bags in the district for the UM Women, hosting over 70 adults in a Lay Witness Mission, opening up your homes for cottage prayer meetings and Backyard Bible Studies, giving away significant funds for college scholarships, and supporting 60 kids in our first Drama Day Camp.

Hopefully these big things will increase our faith, our joy, and bring us closer as a family of God. Hopefully these big things will bring others to Christ and reflect God’s greater glory in the world. As we begin our second year together, I wonder what new BIG things God has in store for us at Mt. Water Project Kenya Water Op-portunity—We now have $30.00 in the Water Tank Fund and Shady Grove UMC VBS is sending another $1,307 raised for this pur-pose. Eluid Muriungi and I spoke to ap-proximately 450 children in two differ-

ent age groups June 26. Rev. Leigh Bartoli, Assoc. Pastor, is providing a fantastic ministry to children with help of many lay members of Shady Grove. We will place a second water tank at school in Kenya. We will provide a third water tank also. The Kenya water drilling fund for a new well now has reached $3,839 Our goal is raise $10,000. We originally hoped to have been include in the General Board of Global Minis-tries double you dollars giving challenge on the first Tuesday in December 2016. However, after numerous calls and emails to the Western NC Conference Office, our Conference Board of Missions simply would not work with us to secure a Global Missions number. We will continue to work on this stewardship goal to match dollar for dollar so that our $10,000 goal will become $20,000. In the meantime, we will continue to supply water tanks to Kenya to see these communities through. You have no doubt saved many lives already with first water tank. Thank you and please pray for our Ken-yan friends. Rev. Scholarship Thank Yous

To the organizers of the Bruce Elledge UMM Scholarship Fund: Thank you for honoring me. It meant so much. Elizabeth Muriungi To the organizers of J.T.&Maud George Scholarship Fund: Thank for the scholarship. It meant so much to me. Elizabeth Muriungi Dear Mt. Carmel UMC, Thank you for the scholarship award. It is a blessing knowing I have your support while I undergo my studies. Mt. Carmel will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you again and God bless. Matthew R. Brown Dear Mt. Carmel UMC Family, Thank you so much for your generous gift towards my college education. I was deeply touched to receive such a blessing on Sunday morning, as was my sister Christian. I will be attending Appalachian State University in the fall to obtain a mas-ter of science in nutrition to pursue a ca-reer in dietetics as a registered dietician. The scholarship I received will immensely be helpful in financing this goal. Gods call on my life is to feed his sheep and take care of his lambs. More specifically, I believe that God calls me to a light for individuals who may be suffering from chronic and life-threatening diseases that can be treated with lifestyle and dietary changes. God works miracles and an-swers prayers every day through his disci-ples and I want to be an instrument of those miracles. Though God has helped me achieve academic success of graduat-ing from college, I have recently been mindful that Jesus calls us not be prosper-ous, but to be faithful. College is a fantas-tic to discover how to follow both of those directions, but making the choice to be faithful instead of successful is easier said than done. Jesus doesn’t give me the benefit of misinterpretation when he gives such clear commandments to love and spend time with the poor. I have been trying to identify where to find the poor and lonely people in my community and what God wants me to do when I get there. This summer I will be interning with Watauga Medical Center of Boone to learn within a clinical rotation and also learn through service as a camp coun-selor with a childhood fitness program called AdFit. Many of the individuals I will be working with are lower-income and live in the rural margins of Watauga County..

Though I am not yet licensed to provide individualized nutrition counseling, I am always licensed to love. Though I am trying to use my knowledge and gifts to serve others where I am right now, God has been giving me some ideas about how I can help people with my registered dietitian license later down the road. Ad-mittedly, I was a bit worried about how I going to finance next year, but I have been talking with God about it, and he keeps telling me that I should trust that he will provide. Thank you, church, for being the answer to my prayers for provision in the school year to come. I have been truly blessed to be integrated into your family and I hope that I can bless you in return., Peace and blessings, Jordan Miller Thank you so much for the scholarship. As I begin in my senior year at UNCC, I can’t begin to tell you how much these scholarships have helped. This is an ex-citing time for me, because with God’s help, I am now able to see my future com-ing together. I thank Him so much for all the support I have received from my church family, not only with scholarships, but especially for the love and support you have shown me. Melody Branch To the Scholarship Committee of Mt. Car-mel UMC: I wanted to express my most sincere gratitude to the members of the scholar-ship committee, not only for investing in me, but for investing in the building up of the youth and young adults with this church family. I have been overwhelm-ingly blessed to be welcomed into such a nurturing and generous congregation that values encouraging students to follow in the footsteps of Christ. This scholarship will not only enable me to pursue my de-gree, but also give me the opportunity to devote more of my personal time and money toward furthering other ministries within my community. Thank you so much! Christian Anne Miller, Music Major at Salem College

Worship Committee Notes

Our Worship Committee met this summer. We are excited about our upcoming services and projects: 1. Early Worship Space - We are still working on creating a

more worshipful space for the 8:30am service that meets in the fellowship hall. An idea board is on display. Once those in that service agree on a plan (which will include ideas on sound panels, wall art, a portable stage, updates to the sound and media system), they will pre-sent those to the Worship Committee who will then send them on to the Trustees for ap-proval. We may need to do some fundraiser dinners for this but hopefully this will get more people on board and excited about this space. 2. Camp Meeting Begins in August - Camp Meeting services will be held all 4 Sundays in August at the 11am worship service. Different Sunday School classes will be doing the choir anthem. We hope to hear testimonies from different people each week in worship. A kick-off cook-out will be held after worship on Au-gust 7th. 3. Banner Workshop on Aug. 14 - Pastor Mary has invited friends Jim and Marilyn Walker from Aldersgate Renewal Ministries to come and look at our worship space and offer ideas. They will be sharing in the 8:30am worship service their testimony of forgiveness and how God has called them into Banner and the Worship Arts ministry. They will also be leading a Banner Workshop in the afternoon from 1-5pm. Other congregations are invited to attend this workshop. We will be making a banner just for Mt. Carmel in that workshop. She recommends charging a $20 registration fee to cover supplies, snacks, and a love offering for the clinicians. 4. Sanctuary Media Project - While we are working on the Early Worship Service, the worship committee will be looking into the possibility of getting two television screens placed on each side of the chancel area. We are hosting some major events in our sanctu-ary this Fall: the 15th anniversary of Septem-ber 11th service, a District Women's Confer-ence, and a Missional Network joint Thanks-giving Worship Service and Charge Confer-ence. This will open greater opportunities for our congregation to connect with what is hap-pening in our conference and around the world. It would open up so many possibilities for us in worship, cantatas, sharing United Methodist mission videos, as well as VBS and

Here is what is going on at Mt. Carmel as to Missions to our community and neighbors: The first Sunday of each month we highlight an offering for the Kenya Water Project. We were able to install one tank to collect rain water and this has helped. We are looking at installing a second tank at a local school. This is an ongo-ing Missional Network project and we have re-

Mission Engagement Team

Drama Camp for next year. Pastor Mary has agreed to get input from our Sunday School classes and bring a report back to the next Worship Committee meeting. Again if the wor-ship committee agrees to move forward with this plan, we will submit a request to our Trus-tees for approval. 5. September 11 Service - We will be lift-ing up the 15th anniversary of September 11th in a worship service on that day. I shared with you a couple of months ago about having a dedicated September 11th Worship Service. A chaplain from the army has been invited to come and speak on that day. We will have special music and plan to invite our local fire and police force as well as first responders to come in uniform. We plan to also get our Boy Scouts and Girl Scout troops involved. A cov-ered dish lunch is recommended to honor of our public servants. We will be moving the worship time from 11am to 10:30am on this day to accommodate all the extra speakers in worship. Other worship events in the works: Chil-dren's Sabbath/Laity Sunday (October 16 @ 11am - our Laity will be leading this service); Homecoming Sunday (November 6 @ 11am- Rev. Doug Miller will be our guest speaker); Thanksgiving Service (November 13 @ 6pm - a joint worship service with 8 other churches in our Missional Network followed by a brief Charge Conference for these churches); Hanging of the Greens Service (November 27 @ 11am - the UM Women will be leading this service). The choir cantata and handbells perform-ance date has yet to be set for December. We are also interested in inviting Salem Chamber Choir to sing in December as well as have a Children's Christmas Musical/Play. Christmas Day in on a Sunday this year so the committee is recommending we have one worship ser-vice on that day. We have a great Worship Committee. If you have an idea you would like to the Worship Committee to consider, please feel free to contact me.

ceived $1272 from Shady Grove UMC, taken up from the children wanting to help children in Kenya during their VBS. We are $700 short of the additional tank. We have $3,800 of the $20k needed to drill the well. Please pray about this and give according to what the Lord leads you to do. We have an opportunity to support a college missionary this year. Campus Crusade for Christ Missionary Whitney Tobin will be speaking in both worship services on August 7th about her year long crusade to help spread the Gospel in South-east Asia. Whitney is a member of one of Pastor Mary's former congregations at Sandy Ridge UMC in High Point, NC. She is a graduate of NC State University.

SC Mission flood homes: one home has been completed that was a complete tear out down to the studs. The tear out work began last Novem-ber and the project was completed June 29, 2016. Food Wagon: Please help in filling the wagon every Sunday as the need is great. A big box of cereal can feed a child breakfast for many days and Pop Tarts are another breakfast favorite among the children. These are just some ideas, but any non perishable food item is welcomed.

Crop Walk: We will be part of the Crop Walk for Hunger again this year. The date is October 16th. Last year we surpassed our goal of $1,000 and hope we can do

that again this year. October is also Pas-tor Appreciation Month and Pastor Mary would like to have everyone bring a bag of food one Sunday and fill our alter area with food items, showing our desire to feed our neighbor. A free lunch and learn will be held on Wed. Aug. 31 at 11:30am-1pm at Temple Emmanuel in W-S. Helping the elderly and those in need with ramps to get in and out of their homes is an ongo-ing project throughout the Yadkin Valley Dis-trict. The District has a team that deals with these needs and we need volunteers that would like to become a part of that team. Example: we will be putting a ramp on a home for one of our neighbors here off Elbert Street on Thursday, July 21. If you want more information or would like to become a part of this team, please call Lynn Harmon (home) 336-725-2594 or (Cell) 336-782-1597. Coming up on September 11 - the 15 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country - especially since this will fall on a Sunday this year, we are hoping to be able to invite our Police, EMT'S and Firemen for a special ser-vice followed by a meal in the fellowship hall. Also, our church will be hosting a Gospel Sing-ing September 24th (with ice cream and all the toppings to be served afterwards), and a joint Thanksgiving Service on November 14th for our churches in the Missional Network. So please mark your calendar now for these upcoming events. Thanks for all you do to help others in need! — Lynn Harmon, Missions Chair

This is a big thank you to each and eve-ryone of you that have helped us with the Annex House the past few months. There has been so much going on over there that we would like for each of you to stop by and see the house. By the time this appears in the newsletter, we hope that everything

is finished and ready for the Property Management Company to have a tenant ready to sign a rental agreement on the house. The income from this house will be put into a fund to make repairs to the house during the years to come. This house was built in 1940 and some repairs have been done over the years but a lot of updating needed to be done and we hope we have accomplished this. Every time we thought we had repaired something then something else would show up that needed to be repaired! First and foremost on the list was the

heating and air systems. We had to install a new furnace which was converted over to gas since the gas lines were already

run and new air conditioning system for the upstairs. We decided that all the duct work had to be cleaned and that was done. These were the two most expensive things that were pressing and had to be done. Cleaning out storage rooms and a piece of furniture in the house had to be re-moved. Next came all the painting that had to be

done. We painted the whole house which included 7 rooms and 2 bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, laundry room cabinets, closets and pantry. The porch was pressured washed twice and then painted. The car-port ceiling had to be repaired and painted. Plumbing problems had to be addressed and corrected. A new vanity and sink, faucets , a shower head , a new toilet, new light fixture and medicine cabinet were all installed in the bathroom down-stairs. The upstairs bathroom received a new mirror and light fixture along with a new shower head. Installation was in-stalled in the basement -this installation had been bought but never installed and we thank the two brave men who did this work. New molding was installed on the stairway, new receptacle and light switch covers were bought and replaced along with ground fault duplex receptacles. All fixtures were cleaned and some replaced, fireplace cleaned and new screen bought, wooden floors and kitchen floor cleaned,

carpet put in one bedroom upstairs, carpet put on stairway going to upstairs. I'm sure we might have missed a few

things that were done or replaced but you can see from the above that it took a lot of hard work and volunteers to do all this work except for the furnace/air and clean-ing of the duct work which had to be done by professionals. What a great bunch of people who took their time to either make donations, buy things for the house and especially those volunteers who actually did the hard work. We couldn't have done it without your help. Below is a list of volunteers of the peo-

ple who cleaned, painted, made donations or bought items for the house: Tony Allen, Debbie Bergmann, Betty Carroll, Bobby Darnell, Roger Gordon, Lynn Harmon, Edgar Miller, Joe Miller, Harold and Linda Miller, Wayne and Debbie Nelson, Ethan Owen, C.O. and Caro-lyn Setzer, Charlie and Kim Shore, Don Sny-der, Mike and Joanne Spetz and Laurie Brown. We appreciate each

and everyone of you and we thank God for all the work you did and do for the glory of God and our church. The Trustees

Walk to Emmaus Five Point Sr. Citizen's Upcoming Retreat

Dates: Sept. 8-11, 2016 = Men’s Walk Sept. 15-18, 2016 = Women’s Walk

The “Walk to Emmaus” is a 72-hour Christian experience designed for adults age 24 - 104. There is a weekend for men and a weekend for women held at Camp Maranatha in High Point twice a year. The weekend begins on Thursday evening at 7pm and ends Sunday evening at 7pm. The Walk to Emmaus is a world-wide retreat organized by the Upper Room (the United Methodist Prayer and Devo-tion Center in Nashville) which takes a New Testament look at Christianity as a lifestyle (Luke 24). The objective of Em-maus is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, and places of work. Emmaus lifts up the way for our grace-filled life to be lived and shared with others. At Emmaus you will spend three full but very enjoyable days, in retreat. You will live and study together in singing, prayer, worship, and discussion. Discussions center around fifteen talks given by Laity and clergy. These talks present the theme of God’s grace, and how that grace comes alive in the Christian Community and expresses itself in the world. You’ll also discover how grace is real in your life, and how you can live in the life of grace, bringing grace to others. You will have the opportunity to participate in the daily celebration of Holy Communion, and to begin to understand more fully the pres-ence of Christ in his body of believ-ers. You will experience God’s grace per-sonally through prayers and acts of ser-vice of a living support community.

Want to Go? Want to go? Contact Pastor Mary Miller or drop by the office for a registration form as soon as possible (788-4183). You may also contact those who have already at-tended from our church: Joe Miller, Ann Farthing, Debbie Nelson, Lynn and Diane Harmon, Linda McDaniel, Edgar Miller. They will be happy to answer your ques-tions. The Walks fill up quickly and the deadline to register for the Fall Walks is August 12, 2016. The Walk to Emmaus is held at Camp Maranatha in High Point, NC. The cost for the entire weekend is $150 per person but the benefits are priceless! A deposit of $50 is due at the time of registration. The remaining amount may be paid at the desk at the beginning of the Walk.

Please join us on August 4 at 10:00 am in the Family Life Center as Bob Tannehill talks to us about how Hospice got started in this community. As you all know, Bob always has such interesting items to share with us. Also, remember to bring your Advance Directive forms that you re-ceived at our June meeting if you want to complete them at the meeting. We will have a notary and we can be each other’s witnesses to complete the documents. Remember, you can fill out the form ahead of time, but STOP before you get to the signature line. Do not sign the form(s) until you are with the notary. Allen Wease, assistant to State Farm Agent, David Norman is providing the no-tary service for us. After the meeting, we will take Bob and Allen to lunch. Note: If you be completing the forms at the meeting, please let me know so I can determine approximately how much time we need to allow for this to be done. Thanks! Diane Harmon (home) 336-725-2594; (cell) 336-926-3195. I will be out of town from July 22-29 so if you call during that time frame, call my cell phone please.

Winston-Salem Nov.12, 1926 - June 10, 2016 Margaret Aileen Atkins Miller, 89, was born Novem-ber 12, 1926 in White Plains, NC to

Quinton and Mary Seal Atkins. She mar-ried Guy S. Miller on her 17th birthday and was married for 50 years. They worked together in the peach orchard and raised tobacco. In 1955 they started a dairy farm. Over the years, Aileen cooked meals for the farm crew. Soon salesmen seemed to just be in the area at lunch time. While raising her family, she and neighbor, Deli-lah Kimel canned and froze bushels of peaches and corn. Summertime fun in-cluded blackberry picking with Vera Spach. Their lye soap making ritual was text book for Foxfire. The time they wanted to make mints and didn't have a marble slab, they poured the mix in the bathtub, what a mess when it stuck to the porcelain tub. The clean-up reminded you of Lucy and Ethel. She spent many hours on the pond dam fishing with her friend, Florence Black. When the two of them were together, the laughter was non-stop, even the worm digging before fishing was fun for them. Neighbor and friend, Evelyn Boles was a regular lunch buddy after church. That always ended with a grocery store visit. She was such a regular at the Rancho that the waitress always said, "I

know, the #12 Flounder Plate." Once she was restricted to the bed, her friend, Bar-bara Copple was always there with a favor-ite food and to fix her hair. She was an ex-pert at Crossword puzzles and crocheted many Afghans. Sister-in-law, Helen Godwin, took her on several trips, her fa-vorite being a train trip across Canada. She and her daughter, Margie, have visited her regularly. Her last year was spent watching NCIS marathons. She had a school girl crush on Mark Harmon. Over the years, in addition to raising a family and barn chores, she would work holidays at Evelyn Par-due's and Margaret Caruthers' Florists making corsages. Bea Garren introduced her to poodles and she began a career in poodle grooming in her basement. She was a 42 year cancer survivor, breast, cervical and skin. Her wish was for her body to be donated to Wake Forest Health so some-one else may enjoy extended life. She is survived by two sons, Edgar (Beverly) Miller, Guy Ted (Debbie) Miller, Son-in-law, Wesley Dzeskewicz; grandchildren, Joe Miller, Rick (Noel) Miller, Emily (Bobby) Scott, Karen (Butch) Thompson, Leslie (Natalie) Sizemore, Chris Comer, and sev-eral great grandchildren. Sisters; Jeanette Cook, Edna Long; Brothers David Atkins and Danny (Carol) Atkins; sister-in-law, Helen Godwin and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter, Marilyn Dzeskewicz, brothers Harold Atkins and Ray Atkins. A memorial service was held Sunday, June 12 at Mt Carmel. Offici-ated by Dr. Rev. Mary Miller.

Attention to all:

We wanted to let the congregation know that we

only have a janitor here at Mt. Carmel twice a

week. As a reminder, if you use the church dur-

ing the week, please be sure to put your trash

out in the dumpster and clean up after your-

selves to be sure it is clean for someone else

during the week. Thank you.
