    For one young Melton mother, the assistance received from the Melton Family Violence Unit was life-changing.

    The mother of two, who did not want to be named, told Star Weekly she had once held a good job as an executive assistant at a Melbourne university and had great aspirations for the future. She then met her husband and after only months found herself pregnant and her life spiralling out of control.

    The first instance of violence was at our engagement party where he was blind drunk and he had a fight with my friend who is mentally unstable, she recalled.

    I was pregnant and it was quite traumatic. I had to jump on him. Then it was another incident a few months later, then another a few months after that.

    The verbal abuse became worse as did her husbands ice addiction.

    Hed take my money then the psychotic part of ice came in delusions. He started yelling at the kids all the time then I took a stand and said thats it, youre not seeing them again.

    It was never physical abuse, always verbal, but it was very in your face threatening he would say if you leave it will be the last thing you ever do.

    And in that moment, like many other victims before her, she believed him.

    I used to think, what if I grab one of them [the children] and he goes at me and hurts one of them, so I would just sit in the bedroom and read them stories and sing them lullabies, trying to distract them from what he was doing outside.

    After contacting the family violence unit, the 23-year-old mother gave her husband another go, but after more abuse she decided enough was enough and spoke to Sergeant Ken Anderson who reassured her that the unit had her back.

    They [the unit] are amazing they constantly call up and visit and give the kids teddies. They started to build up this relationship so the kids dont think its a scary policeman with a gun at my door.

    A protection order was put in place and the children now see their father under strict supervision and, despite having some bad days, life is getting back to normal for them.

    The brave mum has some advice for other women in a similar situation.

    Get the courage to leave. If you cant do it in that moment cause I know what its like in that moment, youre scared phone [the unit] another day.

    With at least four reports of domestic violence incidents to attend each day, members of the Melton Family Violence Unit have their work cut out.

    But each day Sergeant Ken Anderson and leading senior constables Stephanie Cawsey and Luke Bristow look through every incident that is reported and decide what action needs to be taken.

    They call victims to let them know they are there for them; they knock on the doors of frightened women to make sure they are OK;

    and they hand out toys to terrified children who have seen too much violence in their short lives.

    Sergeant Anderson told Star Weekly the group doesnt rest until their victims find freedom. If youve got trouble at home, you can call us well ensure youll have a safe existence at home. Every victim and child has a right to be safe at home and were going to make sure that happens.

    Senior Constable Bristow said the small team worked day and night to see offenders punished

    for their crimes. Inspector Stephen Mutton said apart from police assistance there were also free services like Womens Health West and the Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre that help victims deal with financial and social difficulties. He said the units aim was to curb the increase of recidivist offenders.

    We work with different communities. Its about education; we wont tolerate [violence], you dont tolerate it either.

    A controversial Victoria Police plan to move frontline police into dedicated taskforces has received a mixed reaction.

    Victoria Police is working on a Blue Paper that will outline the best way to police in the future based on population growth, societal changes and crime statistics.

    In a statement released last week, Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said it was time to modernise police practices after running under the same model for 161 years. He said the state needed a mobile policeforce that could allocate officers according to crime trends.

    We need to build greater flexibility into the way we deploy our resources, Mr Lay said.

    Thats why we are now allocating police numbers at larger geographic divisional level so that police commanders have the freedom to move our officers from town to town as and when needed.

    In addition, we also need more dedicated, specialist taskforces that can help police tackle the greatest drivers of harm.

    Challenges such as organised crime, family violence and the destructive prevalence of ice (crystal methamphetamine) in the community are not going to be solved through traditional policing alone.

    Police Minister Kim Wells fully backed Mr Lays comments, but opposition leader Daniel Andrews criticised the move.

    Frontline policing is about a visible police presence, deterring crime, fighting crime and

    keeping communities safe, Mr Andrews said.Keilor Labor MP Natalie Hutchins said

    Victoria Police was out of touch with local communities.

    I really feel its unacceptable for Ken Lay or the government to consider cutting police numbers on the beat, particularly in our area where weve seen a huge increase in our population, she said.

    The Police Association had not responded to Star Weeklys request for comment by deadline.

    Boost for council projectsMelton council has been successful in its application for a $300,000 grant from Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local to implement a Healthy Children Growing Together project. The council also obtained funding for projects including the Melton Food Bank and Welfare Centre ($200,000), Atherstone Community Centre ($500,000) and Melton Health and Community Precinct Planning ($30,000).

    Moorabool council has been forced to shell out more than $103,000 a year over the past four years to repair vandals damage.

    Police figures released last week reveal property damage in Moorabool was up 12.6 per cent in the 12 months to March from 333 offences to 375.

    Moorabool councils acting chief executive, Phil Jeffrey, said the most common forms of vandalism were broken windows and graffiti.

    The main hotspots for 2013-14 are corporate buildings, costing $25,500, and public toilets, costing $25,400, Mr Jeffrey said.

    Vandalism to recreation reserves created a damage bill of $18,500, park repairs cost $12,600, pools cost $9300, and playgrounds set ratepayers back $8400.

    Council generally uses a combination of internal resources and external contractors to repair assets where vandalism has occurred.

    Although security has increased in some areas, it is disappointing to see the continued destruction of public assets through vandalism that is an unnecessary cost to the community.

    In November, this paper reported that a vandalism spree in Darley and Maddingley cost Moorabool ratepayers almost $22,000 in damage to parks and council buildings.

    Vandals smashed 55 windows and damaged plumbing and vehicles at the Darley council offices, with an arson attack on toilets at Darley Park and a bandstand at Maddingley Park left badly damaged.

    Moorabools Inspector Brendon McCrory said he hoped the rise was partly due to people reporting property damage.

    Ill be satisfied if theyre comfortable enough to report it and that the community wants to put out a clear message that they wont stand for it.

    Were still getting people, primarily youth, doing graffiti and damaging cars, so it is still

    an issue for us, said Melton polices Inspector Stephen Mutton.

    A Bacchus Marsh apple farmer says while Employment Minister Eric Abetzs suggestion that jobless Australians under 30 should take up fruit picking was a good idea, it may not translate in reality.

    Nick Dellios, of Dellios Apples, said the doors were always open for eager long-term fruit pickers, but it was important not to pigeonhole young unemployed people into industries they may not be keen on.

    Weve got to be careful about how the fruit is picked. It cant be bruised or damaged, he said.

    A lot of money goes into growing the fruit before its even harvested. Farmers have got enough issues beyond dealing with people who dont want to be there.

    Mr Abetz, a Tasmanian senator, was promoting the governments earn or learn policy for Australian youth when he said that if 90 per cent of fruit picking work in his state was done by foreigners, there was no reason young unemployed Tasmanians could not do the same work.

    Senator Abetz said on May 26 that young people had no right to rely on their fellow Australians to subsidise them.

    He used himself as an example of the earn or learn philosophy in practice, telling the ABC he had taken jobs driving a taxi, delivering bread and working on a chicken farm while he was at university.

    There is no right to demand that just because you dont want to do a bread delivery or a taxi run or a stint as a farmhand that you

    should therefore be able to rely on your fellow Australians to subsidise you, he said.

    Mr Dellios said that at the peak of the harvest season, his farm had 50 to 60 fruit pickers.

    Anyone can do it, but the physical weight of the bag can take getting used to. Its about 30 kilograms, he said. Youre out with the cold mornings, and its physically demanding. But at the same time, youre in the fresh air, surrounded by nice people.

    A Victorian Farmers Federation spokesman said Senator Abetzs idea was not as simple as he made it out to be.

    Theres always a shortage of pickers so any encouragement is positive but far more complicated than redirecting young people into picking fruit, he said.

    Labor MP Catherine King said seasonal work would not address long-term youth unemploy- ment.

    By axing Youth Connections, a program that has prevented almost 1400 young people from Bacchus Marsh to Ballarat from falling into unemployment, Tony Abbott threatens to lead disadvantaged young people into a vicious poverty cycle with nowhere to turn, Ms King said.

    The Melton community joined forces earlier this year to raise close to $12,000 for the Royal Childrens Hospital Foundation. For the second year running residents, businesses and organisations opened their hearts and wallets at Ajays Family Fun Day hosted by Ajays Pizzeria. The event was launched last year in honour of young Ajay Psaila, who died after a tragic accident in 2012.     Steve wins space placeSteve Obeid has been offered an out of this world opportunity.

    The year 12 St Albans Secondary College student has been selected to attend a NASA space camp at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Alabama and he needs your help.

    The six-day camp is designed for vision-impaired and blind students and is all about challenging the myth that a career in space is only for the sighted. Steve, 18, has a degenerative eye condition called Stargardts disease. Doctors have told him that he is likely to lose most of his central vision as opposed to his peripheral vision by the time he is 30, but he is not letting the diagnosis hold him back.

    Steve will join 200 students from around the

    world in September for the space camp, during which he will take part in a six-hour simulated space mission.

    The experience will include emulating life on a space station, scuba diving to simulate weightlessness, astrophysics, space and rocket science, and team building.

    They say its a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I think so, too, Steve said.

    His mum Mary added: Once he was diagnosed, he lacked a lot of confidence. This will give him encouragement.

    A third historic building in Diggers Rest has been destroyed by fire.

    Athenry, known to residents as The Castle, was engulfed by flames on May 26. It is the third historical building in Diggers Rest to be destroyed by fire in the past six years.

    The Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road property, spared the wrecking ball in April, was engulfed in flames when police and firefighters arrived about 3.30am.

    Built in 1906, the house was extensively altered and extended in the 1920s and 30s. It was vacant at the time of the fire and had no electricity or gas connected.

    Melton Inspector Stephen Mutton said the fire was being investigated by the crime investigation unit.

    In April, this newspaper reported that the Melton council had rejected an application by property owner DivCorp to demolish the house.

    Instead, councillors unanimously opted to ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to prepare a planning scheme amendment to apply for permanent heritage controls. An earlier heritage assessment had found the weatherboard house to be historically significant.

    Cambridge Coburn and Watts Residents Association president Nathan Miles said the fire at Athenry was a sad loss.

    Its the third historic building in Diggers Rest to be burnt in six years, he said.

    The other two buildings were the Diggers Rest Hotel, gutted by fire in October, 2008, and the much-loved original general store and post office burned in June, 2011.

    Both fires were deemed to be suspicious.Some walls and the chimney of the hotel

    remain but are part-covered in graffiti.The Diggers Rest general store and post office

    reopened in late 2013.

    Id like to know the statistical chance of having so many historical sites in the same area burned down in such a short time I doubt its happened anywhere else, Mr Miles said.

    David Kilgariff, son of former Melton mayor Michael Kilgariff, lived in Athenry for most of his life. He said he was sad to see the historic property go up in flames.

    We got so close to getting heritage listing. It was burned to the ground before it even got that chance, he said.

    Mr Kilgariff had been hopeful the quirky building would be used as a community centre or cafe.

    Its a real missed opportunity for the Diggers Rest township.

    A common sentiment we hear from residents is that Labor had 11 years to solve many of the issues facing the west and instead it let a lot of them fester and become much worse. Why should residents give Labor another chance?

    Well, the fact of the matter is that in so many of the key and fundamental areas the basics that define our quality of life and define our standard of living things are worse today than they were three and a half years ago.

    Whether its ambulance response times, hospital emergency departments, surgery waiting lists, unemployment, youth unemployment, the number of new jobs that are being created, the number of TAFE courses that are available for kids of working people across Melbournes West, roads, public transport, in all of those areas things are not better. Things are worse and getting worse because weve got a government and Premier that just dont get the right priorities.

    You touched briefly on TAFE there. Its obviously a big issue and weve got Victoria University as our major university in the west, so will you guarantee to reverse the situation there and increase funding to TAFE?

    We made a commitment two years ago that we would put this right and were going to repair as much of the damage as we possibly can. Not damage done by Labor damage done by Liberals who, if they cared about the

    kids of working people, wouldnt cut TAFE, and yet they have. [A total of] $1.2 billion gone, courses gone, staff sacked, campuses closed and fees skyrocketing, even for the courses that are left. Theres so much more money that needs to be paid out in order to enrol in those courses.

    Were going to have more announcements. Weve made an announcement in the broad sense; its called a statement of intent, if you like. Therell be more detail including the costing, the funding and the exact detail of where money will go well before Victorians vote. We understand how important this is and at a time when youve got 20 per cent youth unemployment, cutting TAFEs no answer. The west desperately needs a second river crossing, so why are you opposing the East West Link, and whats the alternative?

    Well, I think what the west needs and what every community needs is a government that will be honest with it. What weve got at the moment is Denis Napthine, whos done nothing for three and a half years and suddenly is going to do everything simultaneously

    What Im going to do is treat the people of the west with some respect.

    Were going to get on and were going to get thousands of trucks off the Westgate every day.

    Then were going to get on and properly plan Melbourne Metro should deliver extra stations servicing the west but theyre cut out of Denis Napthines botched transport scheme. Thats what it is, a botched transport scheme; a station at Fishermans Bend and he cant tell you where, no stations in the north and the west of the city, no additional support for the growing western suburbs.

    Youve put out a plan to remove 50 of the worst level crossings in Melbourne. Which ones do you think would be the first to go?

    We need to be careful to get expert advice on this. Theres a list. The RACV and the national safety regulator have got a list or data. Theres evidence of how many accidents, how many tragedies have occurred and well be guided by that.

    Residents have been calling for the Caroline Springs police station to be opened for 24 hours a day. Is that something you will deliver?
