    MSSM Summer Camp

Welcome to Mars, Your New Home Instructor: Christopher Beckwith Humans are about to establish a sustainable human colony on Mars, but what will it look like? In this course, you will use Google Earth to learn about the topographical features and existing conditions of Mars. You will become a specialist designing a part of the Red Planet’s Martian colony using 3D modeling with Google SketchUp. Finally, you’ll work with fellow colonists to create a public relations video marketing the colony to perspective Earthling settlers.

Crime Scene Investigation Instructor: Christopher Beckwith

Ever wanted to be a crime scene detective? From the moment you visit the crime scene with the police tape barrier and “chalk outline,” you will begin collecting evidence in the form of a mysterious white power, suspicious black fibers, ink samples and fingerprints. As a lead detective, you will conduct a series of tests using microscopes, water, heat, and chemicals to identify the components of each sample. Will your detective skills be good enough to solve this mysterious case?

Lift-Off! Instructor: Larry Berz You can do it! Engineer, construct, launch, and recover your own rocket from its flaming flight into the troposphere and back. Campers will investigate rocket theory, propulsion, and calculation, and will review the marvelous milestones of the moon-bound few who left their boot prints on our nearest neighbor in space. Highly recommended for those seeking a life-changing experience!

Astronomical Adventure Tours Instructor: Larry Berz

Come into cosmic contact with the fundamental wonders and awesome scale of space! You will encounter white dwarfs, supernovas, pulsars, black holes, and quasars. Engineered as a hands-on, exhilarating experience of discovery and activity, this astronomical tour, now in its 16th year at camp, ranks as an unforgettable experience for curious campers.

  • Rube Goldberg Crazy 2.0 Instructor: Erin Boggs Create a gadget of pure imagination! In this course, campers let their creativity run wild. We’ll learn about Rube Goldberg machines, the physics that makes these work (thank you very much Isaac Newton!) and work in teams to build the craziest, coolest, creative machines!

    Archaeology Rocks! Instructor: Erin Boggs

Indiana Jones, move over! In this class, we will uncover our own archaeology site. Through the collection of artifacts, we will piece together the past and maybe even put together a fossilized skeleton! What could it be? If you want to learn more about archaeology and the study of fossils, this is a class for you.

Architectural Extravaganza Instructor: Daniel Dow From ancient grass huts to goliath skyscrapers, architecture has developed into one of the most exciting technical professions in the world. Campers will learn what goes into designing modern buildings and even have a chance to build a model of their dream house, the way the pro’s do.

Out of the Box Engineering Instructor: Daniel Dow

How could you light a candle if all you had was a battery, a plane ticket, hand sanitizer, and a metal dish scrubber? You will discover this and more in “Out of the Box Engineering.” Engineers use their knowledge of the physical world to solve problems, and you can too! Campers will learn various techniques for out of the box problem solving. Then they will use these skills to crack tough and fun engineering challenges.

  • Codemaking and Codebreaking: The Mathematics of Cryptology Instructor: Clint Givens Ever wanted to be a spy or detective? In this class, you will explore some of the codes and ciphers used throughout history to hide secret messages. You will create your own cipher wheel as well as learn a variety of other techniques to encrypt and decrypt codes. We will be using prime numbers, modular arithmetic, binary numbers, and frequency distributions in our study of cryptology. Campers who sign up for this course should be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

One, Two, Three…Infinity (And Beyond) Instructor: Clint Givens

Infinity is a mathematical concept explored in Calculus, but you can understand infinity long before you make it to Calculus class. In this course, we will play with sequences and sets, fractals, and different types of infinity. Campers who sign up for this course should be able to easily add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Computer Programming Instructor: Alex Hennings (boys’ weeks) & Greg Hamlin (girls’ weeks) Computers control so many things around us. But who is controlling the computers? We will be writing programs to make the computer do our bidding. Each student will work on their own version of a large class project which will be chosen as a group. This class is perfect for any camper who loves computers and wants to see some of what’s going on behind the scenes. Past projects created in this class have been small games, physics simulators, and fractal generators.

Robotics Instructor: Alex Hennings (boys’ weeks) & Greg Hamlin (girls’ weeks)

We’re making robots! Using Lego Mindstorm NXT, we’ll design, build, program and compete our robots. We might race them; we might crash them; we might battle them; we might put them through a maze. Whatever we do, we’ll need to use motors and sensors to get it done.

  • Food Chemistry Instructor: Amber Howard Have you ever been told not to play with your food? Well, we’re going to break the rules in this biochemistry course. Be prepared to start a fruit fire, make test-tubes bubble over with goop, look at food DNA , and make pickles light up. It could get messy!

    Microscope Madness Instructor: Amber Howard

Take a look at the microscopic world around you. In this course, you will prepare your own wet mounts, tissue sections and slides. Specimens will be gathered from daily tours around campus, and cell structure, function, and growth examined. We’ll also microscopically watch flat worms regenerate entire portions of their bodies, even after dismembering heads or tails.

How To Train Your Goldfish Instructor: Christopher Howard Can you really train a cat to use the toilet? Can you really train a goldfish to play soccer? The answers to these questions and more will be explored in this hands-on psychology course. We will be learning about operant conditioning and to test out our new operant conditioning techniques, we will be training goldfish to “play” sports.

Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Instructor: Christopher Howard

Unexpectedly, a zombie virus outbreak has occurred and the world is in big, big trouble. Humans panic and scramble to protect themselves while trying to understand and stop the pandemic. Psychology, anatomy, and epidemiology collide as students think about the science behind science fiction. We will compare normal brains to zombie brains, measure how rapidly infectious diseases spread, and learn survival techniques to ensure you stay alive during the Zombie Apocalypse.

(Note: This course includes a guided dissection of a sheep brain.)

  • Vertebrate Vibes Instructor: Kevin Malady Hold live animals in this class including tree frogs, bearded lizards, ball pythons, turtles and sugar gliders! If you ever wanted to learn more about fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals this is the class for you. Each day we will explore a vertebrate through a hands-on lab experience including animal behavior studies like a Siamese fish fighting competition. (Note: This course also includes dissections of fish and frogs.)

Evolution: On Earth and Beyond! Instructor: Kevin Malady

That’s right. In this course, we’ll explore the different theories of the evolution of life on this planet and build on those patterns to examine the possibility of life occurring elsewhere. You’ll learn about mutations, you’ll dissect a squid, and at the very end you’ll dissect… …an ALIEN!

Veterinary Medicine Instructor: Susan Smith Do you want to be a veterinarian or veterinary technician someday? This course will teach you all about medical care for animals. Learn how veterinarians assess an animal’s health, administer vaccines and other medications, determine whether an animal has a parasitic infection using tests and microscopes, read x-rays, and suture and splint. This course is taught by a current student attending Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Understanding the Mammalian Body Instructor: Susan Smith

Have you ever wondered what the heart or the lungs really look like? In this course, campers will explore how the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and nervous systems work in the mammalian body. Through the dissection of a fetal pig, you will see for yourself how the body is intricately connected. This is a great course for anyone interested in veterinary or human medicine. (Note: This course includes a guided dissection of a fetal pig.)

  • Good Vibrations: The Physics of Music Instructor: Brian Sullivan What is vibration? What are waves? Why do different instruments and voices sound different from each other? How does resonance work? Why do some notes sound good together while others sound bad together? In this class, we will answer these and many more questions related to the physics of music. Additionally, campers will build flutes, reed flutes, thumb pianos, and diddly bows basing their designs on their understanding of sound waves and the speed of sound.

The Lighter Side: Hands-On Optics Instructor: Brain Sullivan

Do you like playing in the dark with lasers, prisms, mirrors, and lenses? Would you like to better understand how cameras work? If so, then this is the camp for you? This camp will be an introduction to both geometric and physical optics. Campers will investigate light and its many properties, characterized by rays, waves, and photons. Activities will involve lasers, flat and curved mirrors, lenses, telescopes, fiber optics, prisms, and diffraction gratings.

How do we determine which courses campers get into it? Once we receive all of the camper course selections, we begin determining courses for campers. We go through each campers course selection form and try to place him/her in his/her #1 choice. If a course fills, we will look at who turned his/her form in first. Once all the #1 courses have been determined, we go back through and try to place campers into their next top priority course—this might be #2 #6, etc. depending on which courses filled during the first go-around. We repeat this again to place campers in

their third course. Campers who have turned in their course selection forms early have top priority when courses fill.
