MSP for Islands Workshop -presentations and photos availableThe DG MARE workshop that took place on11 September attracted over 40participants representing islands fromacross Europe and the Outermost Regions.Panel discussions and two interactivesessions were held on the topics of 'Specificchallenges for implementing MSP forislands' and 'Blue Growth opportunities forislands'. MSP for Blue Growth Webinar SeriesThe MSP Platform is organising a webinarseries on the MSP for Blue Growth Studypublished earlier this year. Latest research for Gulf of BothniaGain an overview on recent researchundertaken to promote the sustainabledevelopment of the Gulf of Bothnia aspresented during the SmartSea seminar‚Future of the Gulf of Bothnia‘ which tookplace on 18-19 September in Vaasa,Finland. Joint BONUS HELCOM ConferenceBONUS and HELCOM are joining forces inorganising a conference on 6 November inCopenhagen, Denmark to strengthen theirsynergies together with OSPAR, ICES andJPI Oceans. The conference will discussnew research results, future researchpriorities and policy needs. Read more..
ICES Annual ConferenceICES organised 18 theme sessions duringits annual conference on 24-27 September2018. One of the sessions focused on theMSP visions and indicators. Theparticipants list has been published,session abstracts and posters are availablehere and the keynote speeches can beviewed here. The presentations willbecome available soon. Read more..
MSP ProjectsPanBalticScope Planning Forum On 26 September, the 'Planning Forum forcross-border cooperation' of PanBalticScopetook place. The Forum discussed currentnational and transnational MSP issues, andguides and informs the other activities in PanBaltic Scope. The activities present their workin the Forum and test their deliverables to getfeedback. Read more..
Ecoresponsibility for maritime transportdeclaration signed WWF France, on behalf of the PHAROS4MPAsproject, co-signed a charter ofecoresponsibility for maritime transportactivity. The charter aims at mitigatingthe ferries' impact o n marine wildlife whencommuting between Marseille and Corsica,which includes waste recovery, fuelconsumption decrease, and staff andpassengers training on environmental issues.The PHAROS4MPAs project will use this thisinitial step towards more sustainablemaritime transport activity as a positive casestudy for the global recommendations (to beissued in Spring 2019) on the necessaryp r a c t i c a l collaboration betweenMediterranean MPAs and 8 maritime sectors,including maritime traffic. SEAPLANSPACE meetingThe project 'Marine spatial planninginstruments for sustainable marinegovernance' will organise its first jointmeeting on 18 October in Sopot, Poland. Theproject aims at increasing the know-how andknowledge on sustainable marine governanceof the people engaged in maritime issues andproblems in their daily work. The mainvehicles serving this purpose are: training andnetworking. Agenda topics will includestakeholder involvement, training, multi-useand conflict resolution. Read more..
22 'Blue projects' receive EMFF fundingGrant agreements are currently being draftedfor projects sharing €14.5 million from a callfor proposals launched to accelerate thedeployment of a sustainable blue economyacross the EU and the Mediterranean. Theprojects cover a wider ange of topicsincluding innovation (de-risking investment indemonstration projects), environment(fighting marine litter and restoringecosystems), cooperation for a sustainableblue economy and better ocean governancein the Mediterranean sea basin. PADDLE Summer SchoolThe project organised a summer school from3 to 7 September 2018 in Brest, France.General lectures were given by internationalexperts in the field of MSP and disciplinesoffering tools for informed decision-making

MSP funding opportunities#BlueInvest, AtlanticOn 23 October in Vigo, Spain, the BlueInvest match-making event will bringtogether innovators and investors to boostthe economic potential of the ocean whileprotecting its marine resources. The eventwill gather innovators, investors,researchers, SMEs, NGOs, authorities andrepresentatives of the civil society from theAtlantic region. MSP Practices Improving the co-existence of OffshoreEnergy Installations & Shipping Under the NorthSEE project, a report has beenpublished on the topic of navigational riskassessments (NRA) conducted bynavigational safety authorities in the NorthSea countries. An NRA is commissioned byOWF developers to get approval for building awind farm, and has the goal to improve safetyfor shipping and offshore wind farm turbines.The report presents the current status of NRAprocesses in the North Sea and providesrecommendations to improve and harmonizethese. Using AIS data for MSPThe objective of this study is to illustrate howthe AIS data processing and analysis canproduce adequate information for MSP,including maritime traffic density, shippinglanes and navigational flow, hierarchicalnetworks of maritime routes, alleged fishingzones and spatio-temporal interactionsbetween activities. It also aims to study thelegal questions concerning the use of AIS,discuss the use of such data for MSP, andi d e n t i f y research and developmentperspectives. Read more..

EC Report on MSFD implementationThe EC has published a report on the
Baseline ReportThe report presents a brief introduction toMSP and its benefits, the purpose of thereport as well as a list of public events and achapter on public participation,communication and engagement. The newreport also makes reference to HarnessingOur Ocean Wealth, Ireland's first integratednational marine plan. There are 12consultation questions in the reportintended to spark engagement from a widerange of stakeholders. Written responsesa n d comments can be sent in until 14December 2018. In parallel, a series ofregional public and stakeholder events willbe organised in the month of October 2018.The EU MSP Platform will present at themeeting taking place on 5 October inGalway.Read more..
Poland development of SpatialDevelopment PlansThe beginning of the elaboration of theSpatial Development Plans for internal seawaters has been announced in the Polishsea area under jurisdiction of the Director ofthe Maritime Office in Słupsk. This concernsplans for the waters of the seaports in Łeba,Rowy and Ustka. The contract was signedwith the Contractor on August 14, 2018.Signing of such a contract for similar worksfor ports in Darłowo, Kołobrzeg andDźwirzyno is expected soon. More aboutPolish MSP..

implementation of the EU Marine StrategyFramework Directive assessing the measuresput in place by EU Member States to achieve'good environmental status' or GES by 2020.T h e report shows that EU Member Stateshave made considerable efforts to addresspressures on the marine environment, butthat the measures are not yet sufficient toachieve good, healthy and productive seas by2 0 2 0 . The GES concept is defined bymeasures conserving biodiversity andtackling pressures like overfishing, seabeddamage, marine litter and contaminants.Readmore..
#EUBeachCleanup Campaign On the occasion of World Cleanup Day (20September), some 50 EU delegations andrepresentations teamed up with NGOs,embassies, schools and volunteer networks toorganise beach clean up activities across theworld. By cleaning beaches, riversides andeven cities, the EU representations anddelegations (its embassies in EU and non-EUcountries, respectively) want to send a strongstatement. The campaign started on 11September in Fiji and will end on 27 Octoberin Singapore, a few days before the OurOcean 2018 conference in Bali. Read more..
