This block focuses on two main themes: the musculoskeletal system and substance abuse. In themusculoskeletal system the main aim is to introduce the students to the important and common problems ofthe musculoskeletal system, including trauma, and to use these problems for furnishing students with solidknowledge and skills related to the anatomy of the upper and lower limbs, muscle physiology, histology of

bone and joints, pathophysiology and immunopathology of musculoskeletal disorders and the approach to apatient with a musculoskeletal disorder. This block integrates the related topics across the four themes ofthe curriculum.

The second aim of this block is to enable the students to gain an understanding of the basic concepts ofsubstance abuse such as etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology of addiction and basic concepts ofmanagement.

    Block Objectives

On completing this block the student will be able to:

Describe the process involved in the contraction of skeletal muscle.

Describe the principles involved in moving a limb, or part of it, and apply the principles to theaction of a skeletal muscle in any part of the body.

Explain how the weight of the body is transmitted to the ground, and how the changes thatoccur with age are reflected in the skeleton.

Describe the effects of disruption in the continuity of a bone, and how continuity is restored.

Describe the effects of damage to each of the major nerves supplying the upper and lowerlimbs.

Describe the effects of infection and inflammation of the bone and joints and their process ofhealing.

Explain how bone is a dynamic tissue and explain how normal and abnormal bone growth

occurs. Explain how immunological mechanisms in relation to bone and joint diseases are used in

    investigating patients with such diseases.

Outline the role of imaging techniques in investigating normal and abnormal bones and joints.

Identify anatomical landmarks related to the musculoskeletal system in the living body, modelsand images.

Perform a clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system.

Outlinethe principles of surgical management of common conditions affecting bones.

Communicate effectively with elderly patients with severe osteoarthritis or osteoporosis withfracture.

    Student Assessment

The final grade is a composition of the grades obtained for the specified block requirements, calculatedaccording to the weight as follows:

    Final Written Examination (30%)

    OSCE Final (15%)

    OSPE Final (15%)

Continuous Assessment (40%) (25% Written and 15% PBL)

    Continuous Assessment

Continuous assessment accounts for 40% of the final block grade. The following instruments are used forcontinuous assessment during this block.

    PBL Participation (15%)

    Mid-Block Examination (25%)

    Participation

We feel that a mere presence at the tutorial meetings is not enough to make each session a success, butthat the effectiveness of tutorial sessions depends upon your efforts both at home and during the meetings. Therefore, we will formally evaluate the extent of your participation during the block.

During each session, your individual efforts will be evaluated by your tutor. The tutors are instructed toevaluate the students on two aspects:

    1. The extent to which you demonstrate that you study and prepare yourself thoroughly between thetwo sessions (i.e., preparation), and

    2. The extent to which you actively contribute during group discussions (i.e., participation). Your gradefor each session depends upon both your preparation and your participation. The grade can be a 2,1 or 0.

The block contains eight problems containing 24 sessions, so the maximum amount of participationpoints you are able to obtain will be 48. The total participation points will be recalculated to theweight participation has in the total assessment. Your tutor can give you more information about theevaluation of your participation.

    PBL Participation

PBL Sessions: Participation in PBL sessions accounts for 15% of the total grade for the Block. Studentswho report more than 10 minutes late, leave early, or are absent for more than 10 minutes during any PBLsession will have their participation mark for that session reduced by 50%.
