On 4 October 2016, CEO of MSI, Mr. Jarrod Lim turun padang to the company which
produces stainless steel for the construction of KLCC Twin Tower; HOTO Stainless
Steel Industries Sdn Bhd. During the visit, Mr. Mark Lim, General Manager of HOTO took the opportunity to
show Mr. Jarrod their factory which manufactured stainless steel ornamental tubes. The purpose of the visit was to discuss on the Mineral-based Sectorial Training
Committee matter which was commenced in 2015. After the meeting, it was
decided that MSI will get in touch with HRDC to discuss further regarding the

In conjunction with Hari Sukan Negara on 8 October 2016, MITI also showed its
support by organising its own Hari Sukan MITI. The participation to the event
was open to all MITI and agencies’ staff and family members. MSI also showed
our support by joining the event; in the walk and run categories.

MSI continued to support the industry by
providing insights and consultations; especially on
government’s policy and regulation matters.
Menara MITI was swarmed with visitors as early as 8:30am during the inaugural MITI Day held on 17 October 2016. Showcase
of MITI and agencies, career fair, pocket talks, motor show and lucky draws were some of the activities held during the day.
The event was officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of MITI. MSI also took the opportunity to open a counter
to attend to any enquiries regarding the Iron & Steel industry.
CEO of Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd, Mr. Oswald Wolfe made a
courtesy visit to MSI on 12 October 2016. He was accompanied
by the Economic and Commercial Commissioner from Embassy
of Spain, Mr. Rafael Matos. Bahru Stainless, a life member of
MSI, is one of Malaysia’s leading stainless steel producers
located in Pasir Gudang, Johor. The company is focused on the
manufacturing of:
1. Stainless steel slabs (capacity: 1 million MT/yr)
2. Stainless steel black coil, hot-rolled stainless steel sheets,
plates and coils (capacity: 1 million MT/yr)
3. Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets and coils, stainless steel
hoops/strips (capacity: 640,000 MT/yr)

jointly organized by the Malaysia Steel Institute and Department of Skills
Development, Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) on 18 Aug 2016 at Pearl
View Hotel, Penang. This activity fits well with MSI’s strategic thrust on Human
Resource Development - to scale up the skills of the persons employed by the
iron and steel industry, enhance workforce competency towards achieving the
goals set in line with the Ministry of Human Resource. The event was attended by more than 31 participants comprising mainly of HR
& management level personnel from the iron and steel mills. Presentations were
made by experts from En. Faisal bin Ahmad on “Pentauliahan Pencapaian
Terdahulu (PPT)”, En. Mohd Baktiar on “Sistem Persijilan Kemahiran Malaysia
(SPKM)” and Mr. Rajasurian on “SistemLatihan Dual National (SLDN)” The Q & A session saw numerous questions posed by enthusiastic participants
and these were fully clarified by the speakers.

DISCUSSION WITH JPK ON NOSS AND PPT
TOWARDS A BETTER TRAINING PROGRAMME

MSI met with Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) representatives on 17 October 2016 at JPK’s office in Cyberjaya. The
objective of the meeting was to further discuss regarding the implementation and practise for NOSS and PPT. It was a
fruitful discussion on the flexibility of certification and submission, join venture of MSI and industry for training
certification and convocation upon successful completion of certifications.
MSI is in constant look out for avenues to assist in improving the Iron & Steel industry in Malaysia. On 18 October
2016, a team from HELP University paid a visit to MSI to discuss on collaboration efforts between the two institutions.
The team consisted of:
1) Mr. Geoffrey Kee, Director of Centre for Professional development and Data Analytics
2) Mr. Alan Foley, Director of Quality & Processes
3) Mr. Derek Poon, Champion of Masters in Project Management
4) Mr. Paulo Casadio, Head of University of London International Programmes

Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) is an agency under MITI established to serve as an information centre capable of
providing advisory and assistance in formulating strategies and policies to ensure growth and sustainability of Malaysia
automotive industry. On 18 October 2016, CEO of MSI, Mr. Jarrod Lim together with Senior Manager of Research &
Development of MSI, Mr. Jeffery Chang paid a courtesy visit to MAI’s office in Cyberjaya. The team was welcomed by MAI’s delegation; comprises of the CEO, Dato Mohamad Madani Sahari, CFO, En. Mohd Sazali
Mohamed Amin, COO, En. Nizmar Mohd Nazar and GM of Human Resources Development, Mr. Leon Lai. It was indeed a
very rewarding knowledge sharing session amongst fellow agency.
One of the ways to improve the Iron & Steel Industry in Malaysia is the provision of training. Pursuant to this, Mr. Jeffrey
Chang, Senior Manager of Research & Development of MSI met with Dr. U. Johnson from University of Malaya (UM) on
25 October 2016. Dr. U. Johnson is currently doing research on three topics: 1) Cost Saving by Using 600mpa High Strength Steel Bar for Column Structural
2) Development of By-Product of Steel Slag in Civil and Construction Industry
3) Development of By-Product of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate in Civil and Construction Industry
During the meeting which took place at the Engineering Faculty of UM, Dr. U. Johnson had agreed to share his research
findings with the industry and be involved in training sessions in the future. MSI is looking forward for more
collaborations with various parties in our vision to facilitate a sustainable Iron & Steel Industry in Malaysia.

CEO of MSI, Mr. Jarrod Lim paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Ooi Hung Hock,
Managing Director of Kentzu Steel Sdn Bhd, cum the President of Malaysia
Steel and Metal Distributors Association on 27 October 2016. The company
is one of the importers and stockists for stainless steel products, mainly:
1) Stainless Steel Coils
2) Stainless Steel Flanges
3) Seamless pipes and welded carbon steel pipes Kentzu Steel is also the owner of two other stainless steel product
manufacturers, Kantzen-Tetsu Sdn Bhd and S.P. United Industry Sdn Bhd.
Currently, Kantzen-Tetsu is manufacturing a wide-range of stainless steel
products; i.e. Stainless steel welded pipes (industrial pipes), Stainless steel
welded tubes (ornamental tubes), Stainless steel butt-weld fittings, Stainless
steel exhaust pipes and Stainless steel flat bars. The company exported
around five to 20% of its products to countries around the world. On the other hand, S.P. United Industry Sdn Bhd produces high quality pipe
fittings and allied products; i.e. pipe joint, lap joint stub end, butt weld
fittings, lap joint flanges and forged pipe fittings. Around 95% of its products
are exported, especially to Japan, Europe, America and Asia. The visit which lasted for almost two hours discussed on the issues on the
Iron & Steel industry in Malaysia. It ended with a mutual understanding
between both parties on the need for support from all parties involved in the
industry to move forward.
