    Thank you,

    MATTHEW G. MOCK2021 MSCA President

MSCA 2021 President’s Letter I have been a MSCA member since 2004. I have served beside many of you on committees and met most of you as we networked at a program or an event. I believe very strongly in this organization and am in awe of the talented individuals who make up this group. So, I am honored to serve as the President of MSCA for 2021 and look forward to joining with all of you to embrace the challenges in our industry and what appears to be our new normal.

Today, we are one of the largest retail real estate trade association in the upper Midwest. The focus of our organization is to provide excellent industry data, insights and education through the monthly programs that the MSCA staff and volunteer committee members develop, coordinate and execute. These continuing education opportunities provide needed insight into relevant topics as well as great networking opportunities on a regular basis. I am very impressed with our membership and the MSCA staff for embracing the virtual learning model. If we can’t physically gather together, we are learning to adapt with a video version of learning and networking.

As we have learned with most everything in our lives, the more you put into your MSCA membership, the more you will experience the benefits of membership. Where else you can be surrounded by hundreds of your peers, colleagues and your next business deal or vendor relationship! Take advantage of this vast group of individuals that make up MSCA. Join a committee, become a legislative contributor, get involved and share your wisdom and experiences and help us build an even stronger organization!

Our future, our industry, our thinking is all being challenged in these times; I can’t think of a better group of people to be working with. I am encouraged to see the changes, the innovation and the redevelopment of the retail industry…What part will you play?

Expanded Holiday Season & Pandemic Drive Retail Sales

HOLIDAY RETAIL SALES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON INCREASED BY 3%, according to Mastercard Spending Pulse, running from October 11 through December 24. A testament to the holiday season and strength of retailers and consumers alike. Shoppers this season shopped from home ‘for the home’, leading to record e-commerce growth. U.S. consumers shopped far earlier, as retailers offered special promotions early and often. Black Friday was down (-16.1%), Thanksgiving weekend through Cyber Monday remained a key time for shoppers, with Black Friday being the top spending day of the 2020 holiday season.

Home furniture and furnishings experienced the strongest growth of any sector, up 16.2%, and it grew 31.0% online specifically. Home improvement up 14.1%, with e-commerce sales up 79.7%. Apparel experienced a decline of 19.1%, while electronics and appliances were up 6.0%. Department stores saw overall sales decline of 10.2% and online sales growth of 3.3%, reinforcing the importance of omnichannel offerings. Buy online, pick up in store as well as technologies like contactless were key for retailers this season.

WILL 2021 BE ABLE TO BEAT THESE FIGURES?
