IntroductionThis section describes the installation procedure for MSC SimOffice. In addition, the section will describe the configuration of the software and security. By following these installation and configuration instructions and using the appropriate license file, the software will be available for use immediately.

Before starting this installation of SimOffice please be sure to uninstall any previous versions.

SimOffice Installation from DVD-ROMThe software may be installed entirely from DVD-ROM. There are brief installation instructions on the DVD insert, but more complete instructions can be found in Installation, 6.

In general, the software runs on all 32 bit PCs running Windows XP SP2/or Windows Vista, but please refer to Hardware Requirements, 3 and Supported Configurations, 5 for complete details.

It will be necessary to log in as administrator or with administrator rights (required to install the drivers needed for standalone Windows XP SP2/Vista installations).

On all systems, it is suggested that you exit out of all other programs before installing the software for the first time.

To successfully install SimOffice you must have at least 2 Gigabytes of free disk space.

3Ch. 1: SimOffice InstallationHardware Requirements

Hardware RequirementsThere are no special hardware requirements for SimOffice beyond those imposed by the Windows operating system. The table below shows the minimum recommendations, to ensure maximum productivity with SimOffice.

Suggested HardwareSimOffice will run on many types of hardware. Proper choice of hardware however, can often make the difference between frustration and productivity. Here are a few suggestions:

Memory, RAM:At least. 128 MB of RAM is required to run SimOffice, however to run the solid modeling engines 512 MB or higher is recommended. For the solver, at least 100 MB "Memory Space" (which is the combination of RAM plus virtual memory) should be available. Adding RAM can be one of the most cost effective methods of increasing performance.

Hard Disk:Required hard disk space is very difficult to estimate, but in general, the more disk space available, the better. The analysis phase will drive disk space requirement. The amount of disk space required will also depend on the number of model files that are stored at any one time.

A suggested minimum is 500 MB of temporary storage space available for running reasonably sized models.

Graphics Boards:Standard graphics adapters work very well with Windows and SimOffice. Specialized boards that support OpenGL provide increased graphical performance, particularly when dynamically rotating large complex models. They also usually provide higher resolution and more colors, which makes the graphics easier to interpret.

InstallationInstalling SimOffice is a simple process which uses a setup program included on your MSC SimOffice DVD-ROM. The procedure below describes the basic steps involved in running this setup program for the different Windows systems.

PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALLING

Important: Uninstall any previous versions of SimOffice before installing a new version of the product or if reinstalling the same product. In order to uninstall, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to locate either SimOffice or MSC SimOffice and click on Remove to uninstall SimOffice. If you fail to do so, some registry entries may not be written correctly and could require clean up of registry and reinstallation.

At any point during the installation, you can cancel the installation by clicking on 'Cancel'. You may also use the 'Back' button to go back to a previous step to change your prior selection.

During installation you will be prompted to select a Scratch directory. Make sure you know which directory you would like to use and create it now as you will not be able to create it at the time of selection. You may use c:\temp which is the standard directory for temporary files on Windows systems. This folder should always be accessible and be on a disk with sufficient free space. The size of scratch files depends on the size of the models solved.

Installation Setup ProgramInstallation is performed through a program called MSetup. Follow the instructions below to start the setup program. This program will prompt you for information during the installation.

The setup program allows you to specify installation parameters, such as the location of the software, the temporary scratch directories, and license information if applicable. Follow the directions on the setup program dialogs and enter information when necessary. If you wish to stop the setup program during the installation, click Cancel.

To install SimOffice:1. Log into your computer and insert the installation disk.

The setup program will automatically run when you insert the DVD-ROM into the DVD drive.

2. If you have downloaded the .exe (self extracting exe) file. Simply click that exe to extract the files and automatically start the installation wizard.

3. If you have downloaded the .iso image you will need to burn a DVD first and then proceed as in Step 1.

Note: If the setup program does not start automatically, use the file browser to view the files on the SimOffice installation disk and double-click on the file setup.exe.

7Ch. 1: SimOffice InstallationInstallation

The SimOffice Main Installation PanelSimOffice licensing requires that FlexLM be installed and running. If you do not have FlexLM installed, select the FlexLM Server button and follow the instructions for FlexLM Installation. Flexlm 10.8 (which is the version supplied with SimOffice) is not supported by Windows Vista. You will need to download the appropriate patch from: http://www.mscsoftware.com/support/software_updates/licserver.cfm

If you already have FlexLM installed, select the SimOffice button and skip to SimOffice Installation.

2. On the FlexLM Host ID dialog, click Yes if you have a license file and wish to continue with the FlexLM Server installation.

FlexLM automatically determines your HostID number. This number is used to create your specific SimOffice license file. Please provide this number to your account manager to generate your license file if you do not have one.

Note: A license file is not required to complete the installation.

LicensesBefore you can use SimOffice, it should have access to a valid license file, either a local one or from a license server. This section explains the steps involved.

Local License:1. Click Start ->Run. 2. Type cmd in the text box and press enter.

A command window comes up.3. Type ipconfig /all and press enter.

You will get information about the network cards on the system. Look for the line that says Physical Address. Note the alphanumeric characters on this line. This id of the network card will be used to generate a valid license file. Please forward this to your account manager. You will receive a file, generally named 'license.dat'.

4. Place it in an accessible directory. 5. When you are prompted for the license file location, browse to this file.

As an alternative you can also define an environment variable to point to the file. The MSC_LICENSE_FILE environment variable provides the location of licenses to SimOffice. It can be set in Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables. Use MSC_LICENSE_FILE for 'Variable name' and the path to the license file (license.dat) for 'Variable value'.If you are accessing licenses from a license server, you can use the format of <port>@<hostname> for the Variable value. You will need to obtain both the 'port' and the 'hostname' information from your system administrator.

27Ch. 1: SimOffice InstallationTroubleshooting and Other Installation Issues

Troubleshooting and Other Installation IssuesIf the prior version of SimOffice is not uninstalled before installing the current version, the registry may not get updated appropriately. In this case, make sure you uninstall the software and update the registry as follows:

1. Click on Start -> Run. 2. Type regedit in the window.

The registry editor opens. 3. Make the following changes.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> MSC.Software -> SimOffice

4. If only SimOffice is present, remove the entire MSC.Software folder. If other products are also listed (e.g. Patran), remove only SimOffice

5. If MSC.Patran or MD Patran is also installed on the system, an entry for P3_HOME may be present - an environment variable defined to pointing to Patran home directory. Either change it to SimOffice home directory or remove this environment variableA FlexLM licensing server is not needed to run SimOffice. However, if you already use a Flexlm server for other products, you may use the server for SimOffice as well. Make sure that the Flexlm server is of the version 10.8 or above. Flexlm 10.8 is not supported by Windows Vista. You can download the appropriate patch from:http://www.mscsoftware.com/support/software_updates/licserver.cfm
