OnefacetofBiomechanicalDesignistoinvestigatehumanmovement,humanperception,andhumancontrolcharacteristics.Anotherfacetistodesignuser-friendly,intuitivetechnologiesbasedonanunderstandingofhumancharacteristics.Theknowledgeofhumanbehaviouracquiredcanbeusedtodiagnosediseases,orserveasinputforthedevelopmentofsystemsthatinteractwithormimicbiologicalsystems.IncontrasttothemoreclinicallyorientedMScProgrammeinBiomedicalEngineering,BiomechanicalDesignfocusesontheengineeringchallengesofdevelopingbio-inspiredrobots,fine-mechanicalsystems,hapticinterfaces,andtoolsfortopathletes.
Thefirstyearofthetrackconsistsofacombinationofcompulsorycourses,specialisationcourses,andelectives.Duringthesecondyear,studentsarerequiredtocompleteaMaster’sthesisproject,precededbyaninternshipandaliteraturestudy.
BioRobotics(BR)Untilrecently,robotsonlyplayedasignificantroleinthemanufacturingindustry.Nowadaysrobotsbegintoperformawidevarietyoftasksinsociety.Therequirementsfortheseservicerobotsarevastlydifferentfromthoseformanufacturingrobots.Insteadofspeed,accuracy,andpower,servicerobotsrequiresafety,adaptability,andgentleness.Thisisthefieldofbiorobotics.Theword‘bio’hastwomeanings.First,biologyistheenvironmentfortherobots.Theyhavetocopewithhumansandnature.Second,biologyservesasasourceofinspiration,asthehumanbodyexcelswhenitcomestoadaptabilityandgentleness.Thisspecialisationfocusesontheanalysisanddevelopmentofrobotsthatphysicallyinteractwithhumans.Topicsincludehumanoidrobots,robotvision,androbottouch.Youwilllearnhowtodesign,simulate,andcontrolrobots,howtomodelthehumanbodyandbrainasacontrolsystem,andhowtocreatemechanismsthatinteractsuccessfullywithhumans.Theknowledgeobtainedduringthisstudyishighlyregardedwithinthetraditionalmechanicalengineeringindustries;ouralumnifindjobsinallmajorindustrialsectors.

BioInspiredTechnology(BITE)Probablythegreatestdiversityofmechanicaldesignsisfoundinnature.Foreachchallengeposedbytheoftenhostileenvironment,awealthofsolutionstocopewiththethreatshasevolved.Inspirationfromnaturedrivesthesearchforinnovativesolutionsinsuchfieldsasmedicine,rehabilitation,microsystems,andmechatronics.IntheBioInspiredTechnologyspecialisation,anextensiveexcursionintobiologyprovidestheinspirationtosearchforinnovativesolutionstowhatareoftenuncommonchallenges.Youwillgaintheskillsrequiredtodevelopinnovativefine-mechanicalsystemsthatareinspiredbymechanicalapproachesinbiology.Youwilllearn,forexample,howtousespringsandelasticmaterialstomakelightweightandinherentlysafe,elegantconstructions,inspiredbymuscularskeletonsystems.Youwillgainknowledgeaboutinnovativedesignapproachesinnatureandskillstotranslatethebiologicalworkingprinciplesintotechnologicalsolutions.Youwillalsobetrainedtodevelopmechanicalsystemsthatnaturallycomplementthebehaviourofbiologicalsystems,inparticularhumans,sothatthemechanismsareeasytousebyahumancontroller.
HapticsInterfaces(HI)Traditionally,mosthuman-machineinterfacinghasfocusedonprovidingvisualandauditoryinformation,neglectinganimportantcommunicationchannel:haptics.Hapticsensationincorporatesthesenseoftouchandproprioception,whichallowsquickandintuitivephysicalinteractionwithourenvironment.Inthelastdecade,theuseofhapticshasseenagreatsurgeofinterestinanumberoffieldssuchasin:(a)restoringphysicalinteraction(e.g.,inteleoperationsystemsforinteractionwithremoteenvironmentsasencounteredinspaceanddeepseaapplications);(b)simulatingphysicalinteraction(e.g.,formedicalandautomotivesimulators);and(c)enhancingphysicalinteraction(e.g.,providingadditionalguidanceforrehabilitationordriversupportsystems).Thisspecialisationfocusesondevelopinghuman-centeredhapticinterfacesinalloftheabovefields.Suchhuman-centereddesignrequiresagoodunderstandingofthemechatronicsofhapticinterfacesaswellasofhumancontrolstrategies,perception,andmotioncontrol.Youwillfocusonthedevelopmentofhapticdevices(hardwareandcontrollersoftware),onthedesignrequirementsofdevicesforspecifictasks,andonstudiesintothewayhumansinteractwithsuchdevices.

IhavealwaysbeenfascinatedbyautomobilesandwasfortunatetobeapartoftheFormulaStudentteamduringmybachelorsdegreeinIndia.Iwassurprisedbytheamountofworkloadthedriverhad.Thisgotmeinterestedintodriverassistancesystemsandinparticularmodellingthedriverhimself.Iwantedtopursueresearchinthisfieldandstartedsearchingforcourseswhichofferablendofbiomechanicaldesignandautomotiveengineering.Withfacilitieslikefixedandmovingbaseddrivingsimulators,hapticsandsensorimorcontrollabs,theBMDcourseatTUDelftwasaperfectandobviouschoice.
IstartedmyMasterBioMechanicalDesigninSeptember2013,stillskepticabouthowIwouldadjustintothisnewsocialandacademicenvironment.Allthosewereputtorestaftertheintroductionprogammeandafewlectures.Theprogrammehasbeensystematicallyplannedandoffersalotoffreedom,sodoesthecityofDelft.It’saveryniceandfriendlyplace,withbeautifularchitectureandlotsofcanals.Itisveryfascinatingtomeetandgettoknowpeoplefromallpartsontheworld.
Iaminterestedinmakingamathematicalmodelofthehumandriveranduseitinvirtualsimulationsfordesigningvehicles.Itisaverysatisfyingexperiencewhenyoucomeupwithanideaanditisfinetunedbytheexpertiseofyoursupervisors.Duringmyfirstyear,Iattendedvariouscoursesfrombiomechanicsandautomobiles,whichhavegivenmeastrongfoundationtobuildmyresearchupon.Thesestrongcredentialsalsohelpedmefetchaninternshipabroad,whichisalsoanessentialpartoftheMaster'sprogramme.MyinternshipwasinthefieldofsensorimotorlearningandhaspreparedmewellformyMaster'sthesisproject.
IamquitehappytohavemadethedecisionofcomingtoDelftandsofar,itsbeenagreatexperiencewithgreatfriends,greatatmosphere,friendlypeopleandveryencouragingfaculty.
