The programme specifications are laid dowm by DTU in accordance with Ministerial Order onBachelor- and master programs at universities, No. 814 of 1 July 2010, Ministerial Order on JointProgrammes and Ministerial Order on Grading Scale and Assessment at Universities No 250 of 15March 2007. In accordance with DTU's regulations, section 9.7 the curricula has been approved bythe Dean for Education, authorised by the President.

Duration

MSc program is a 2-year programme equivalent to 120 ECTS point (European Credit TransferSystem)  

The MSc Eng programme builds on either a 3-year Bachelor of Science in engineering, a 3-yearBachelor of Science, natural sciences or a 3.5-year Bachelor in Engineering.

Admission requirements

Applicants may be enrolled in a specific program. In the specific curriculum for the program isstated which BSc Eng- and B Eng programs that qualify according to the criteria of the masterprogram.For B Eng programs there will normally be specified a requirement of elective courses, which musthave been passed under the B Eng program or must be supplemented as Open University coursesbefore enrollment in the master program.

DTU may accept students after an individual assessments of their qualificiations. This applies forstudents whose bachelor degree is not formally qualifying for DTU's master programs, but wherethe applicant has attained knowledge and competencies comparable to those of aqualifying program.

Applicants from DTU will be ensured enrollment in one or more master programs in the samesubject area as their bachelor, if the academic requirement of electives are met. More can be read inthe specific curricula.

It is possible to apply for master programs outside the the subject area of the bachelor, ifthe specified academic requirements for enrollment has been met. More can be read in the specificcurriculas.

The MSc program is offered in English.

Academic qualifications for Bachelors in Engineering (B Eng, 3.5 year)Bachelors in Engineering may be accepted to the MSc program or programs that are immediateextensions of the Bachelor program. In order to be accepted to some of the MSc programs you haveto meet an additional requirement of at least 10 credit points within the scientific disciplines. Thecourses which will meet the requirements are listed in the specific curricula for the master program

The qualifications of the applicants BSc in natural sciences will be made specifically in regard tothe master program applied for.

Meeting the academic requirements prior to enrollmentThe admission requirements must be met prior to enrolment in the MSc program. The admissionrequirements can be met either by taking specific courses at DTU or by completing courses under aresearch-based program with equivalent contents and level.

Courses at masters level before attaining qualifying degree

You might be inelegible for a masters programme by not having passed one or a few courses at yourbachelor programme. Consequently, you might have to spend half a year at these few courses. If so,you could apply for an exemption, allowing you to enrol at courses at masters level before you havecompleted your qualifying degree.

If it is due to special circumstances that you have not completed your bachelor programme, and ifyou need no more than courses corresponding to 25 ECTS points for completion, you can apply forexemption.

A condition for exemption will invariably be that the required courses at the qualifying programmewill be passed within a half year of the date of the exemption given. The date will be written in theexemption. If your qualifing degree is not completed by this date, you will not  be able to enrol forany more courses at masters level.

Academic requirements for this programmeApplicants to DTU’s MSc program in Electrical Engineering must have completed a BSc inElectrical Engineering or another relevant course of study. Applicants should possess goodqualifications in basic mathematics and physics as well as in electrical, electronic andelectromagnetic technology. It is also recommended that applicants are acquainted withprogramming and preferably have experience with theoretical and experimental work.

Applicants who have completed DTU’s BSc in Electrical Engineering are directly qualified for thisprogram.The 3.5-year B Eng program in Electrical Engineering (Elektro), Electronics and Computing(Elektronik) and Electrical Power Engineering (Stærkstrøm) gives admission to the MSc inElectrical Engineering. It is important to be aware that the MSc programme is at a higher level than the BSc and B Engprogrammes and that it requires a high degree of self-dependence.Other applicants must be able to document that they possess corresponding qualifications and willbe assessed individually.The specific academic requirements for the MSc courses can be found in DTU’s course databaseand it is the individual student’s responsibility to ensure that these requirements are met.Students with a bachelor degree who seek admission to MSc programs at DTU must demonstrateproficiency in English (B-level for students from Nordic countries, IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson testfor international students).

Objectives

The MSc program has two central objectives:

• Academic cutting-edge competencies which are the result of a clear study progression andwhich are unique to the graduate. The academic competencies contain elements of actualresearch and are manifested in the final master thesis

• Polytechnic holistic competencies that, in addition to an identity-creating professionalism, alsoinclude being able to gain an overview of a complex technical problem and being able to thinkin technical terms in commercial and societal contexts 

An MSc in Engineering from DTU has a research-based education at the highest technologicallevel, which qualifies the holder to take on knowledge-intensive positions in the businesscommunity and society that are distinguished by a high level of scientific development. Competence profile

A Master of Science in Engineering (Electrical Engineering)

• possesses insight into the general aspects of a solution to a problem in the field of electricalengineering, and can transfer solutions between different issues

• can contribute to preparing and carrying out a research project in which electrical engineeringis an integral part of the technological solution

• can describe an issue in the field of electrical engineering and process it at a mathematical levelwith a view to creating a solution applicable in practice

• has a comprehensive view of a wide range of solution options, and is capable of selecting theoptimal solution in relation to a given electrical engineering problem

• can analyse and assess issues in the area of signal processing and at least one of the followingcore fields: electric and electronic components, circuits and networks, control, regulation,embedded programming, electromagnetism and field theory, electric energy and output, andacoustics

• has the capacity to identify solutions by applying both theoretical and experimental methods tocomplex issues in the field of electrical engineering and allied areas

Structure

Study lines/focus areasThe MSc in Electrical Engineering comprises five study lines. These are fixed programs of studythat have extra high requirements in relation to the actual MSc program. Graduates of these studylines earn the right to have the specialist title on their diplomas. The study lines are:

• Space Technology

• Wireless Engineering

Programme provisionTo obtain the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, the student must fulfil the followingrequirements:

• Have passed General Competence Courses adding up to at least 30 ECTS points

• Have passed Technological Specialization Courses adding up to at least 30 ECTS points

• Have performed a Master Thesis of at least 30 ECTS points within the field of the generalprogram

• Have passed a sufficient number of Elective Courses to bring the total number of ECTS pointsof the entire study up to 120.

Deadlines and Study Activity Requirements

Study Activity Requirements

If you have been enrolled into your programme in September 2012 or later you must have passed aminimum of 20 ECTS credit points in your first year of study to comply with DTU's study activityrequirements.

Deadlines

The MSc programme is a 2-year programme. The entire MSc course of study must be completedwithin four years. To earn a MSc degree, you must earn 120 credit points under one of DTU’s MScprograms and the mandatory courses must have been passed.  In unusual circumstances, such aslong-term illness or the like, it is possible to apply for dispensation with regard to the deadlines. Thestudent counselors can help with a dispensation application. 

Apart from the programme provisions regarding credit points the following rules must be compliedwith:

• Grades according to the 7-point grading scale must be obtained in at least 2/3 of the creditpoints earned

• At least 1/3 of the course of study must be evalueated by external examiners

Courses

The MSc program in Electrical Engineering is an application-oriented andresearch-based education and is anchored at DTU Elecrical Engineering, but it also includes coursesfrom many other departments at DTU. The program covers all aspects from theory andmethodology over components and systems to applications. The courses vary from the highlytheoretical to the extremely practical with the opportunity for experimental work in advancedlaboratories. The Master's thesis will be associated with current research at DTU and/or incollaboration with a company outside DTU.The program is anchored in DTU Electrical Engineering but includes courses from severaldepartments of DTU:

Master thesis

The Master thesis is the final assignment of the MSc course of study. The objective of the Masterthesis is to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired in anindependent way on a larger project that concludes with a written report. The start time of the thesisis just after the last study activity.The thesis should be written individually. However, two students may report and submit a singlethesis, where general or describing sections as e.g. the introduction may be jointly written by bothstudents - but all other sections must be written individually.

The Master thesis must be written in English and it must include an abstract. As an exeption thesupervisor of the MSc thesis can assess that the thesis may be written in Danish. This decision canonly be made due to professional, academic reasons. The director of studies for the degree programmust accept this exemption.

The director of studies for the degree program must approve that the Master thesis falls within theprogram’s focus area. The director of studies automatically receives this information once yourthesis is reported and you will be directly notified if the topic cannot be approved. The Master thesismay be undertaken in collaboration with a company.

Project agreement, volume, and project period A Master thesis agreement is to be concluded between the student and a supervisor be approved bythe department. The department reports the agreement via e-mail to the Office for Study Programsand Student Affairs.The supervisor for an MSc thesis must be a member of the scientific staff  with research obligationsholding a permanent position at DTU and must be approved by the Head of Department. Thesupervisor is required to confirm that the student has the requisite academic qualifications forundertaking an Master thesis. The student is required to document his/her qualifications and level inthe form of a list of courses he/she has completed. The supervisor must regularly follow theprogress of the thesis and ensure that the Master thesis falls within the academic focus area of theMSc program.

The student must conclude a Master thesis agreement with a supervisor no later than 14 days priorto beginning work on the thesis. The work must not begin until the final approval of the agreement

has been given by e-mail by the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs. The MSc thesisagreement is binding and counts as an examination attempt from the time work on the Master thesishas begun. The Master thesis agreement may be cancelled up to the start date of the Master thesis,in which case it will not count as an examination attempt.

The Master thesis must have a scope equivalent to 30, 32½ or 35  ECTS credit points. In connectionwith the formulation of a project agreement, the project period should be specified. A MSc thesismust be undertaken as a full-time course of study and the stipulated time is:

• 30 points = 5 months

• 32½ points = 5½ months

• 35 points = 6 months

As a general rule no parallel activities are conducted in this period. Nevertheless in order not toprolong the total time of the study programme the period may be extended with 3 weeks study forevery 5 additional ECTS-points from course activity.

The start time of the thesis is just after the last study activity. For master thesis that commence after1 January 2015 the following start date apply:

Spring term:

• first working day in January or

• first Monday after the three week period in January

Autumn term:

• first working day in August or

• first Monday after the (new) three week period in August

Alternate start dates may apply for academic reasons and if approved by the supervisor. Thejustification must be reported in the project registration system.

The content and learning objectives of the thesisThe content of the thesis is to be agreed with the programme supervisor. The thesis may contain acombination of experimental work, fieldwork, theoretical studies, synthesis, modelling and analysis.All theses must include elements of literature studies and criticism. In addition, the thesis containsthe following overarching learning objectives:

• can identify and reflect on technical scientific issues and understand the interaction betweenthe various components that make up an issue

• can, on the basis of a clear academic profile, apply elements of current research at internationallevel to develop ideas and solve problems

During the first month, the student is to submit a project plan outlining the objective of the thesisand justification for same to his/her supervisor. In the project plan, the student is also to take intoaccount the overarching learning objectives listed above. When submitting the thesis, the student isto enclose a separate document presenting the original project plan and a revision of same, whereappropriate. In addition, the document is to include a brief auto-evaluation of the project process. 

DeadlineThe agreed project period must be observed. Failure to observe the deadline means that the studentwill have used one examination attempt.

Under special circumstances the Study Board may grant extensions of up to three weeks.Application must be submitted to the relevant Study Board.

Applications for extensions beyond three weeks should be addressed to the Board ofExemptions for the MSc Program in Engineering and must be received by the Board no later thanone month prior to the agreed submission date. Dispensations may be granted for an extensionowing to unforeseen delays during the project period.

Application for dispensation must be submitted to the Office for Study Programmes and StudentAffairs or sent electronically to [email protected]. You can find more informationregarding dispensation in DTU's Rules and Regulations chapter 4.

If you wish to abandon your thesis before the deadline and start over within a different field ofstudy, your supervisor must inform the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs. Then anew project agreement must be made within the new field of study and with a new ordinary dealine.However, you will have used one examination attempt on the abandoned project.

Failure to observe the deadline means that you will have used one examination attempt. You and thesupervisor must then make a new project agreement for the thesis but with an altered assignmentwithin the same subject area. The new thesis must be submitted within 3 months of approval of theproject but you may apply for an exemption.

AssessmentLearning objectives are an integrated part of the supervision.

In assessment of an Master thesis, the quality of the academic contents will carry the most weight.The student’s writing abilities will also count, though this will be weighted slightly less, whilespelling will carry little weight.

The Master thesis is evaluated according to the Danish the 7-point grading scale on the basis of areport and an oral defense. The report and the oral defense will be evaluated as a whole. The MScthesis will be evaluated in conjunction with one or more external examiners. The department,supervisor and examiner will, in consultation with the student, set a date for the oral presentationand defense. The presentation must be given no later than two weeks after the written report hasbeen submitted. This two-week deadline is excl. Christmas Holiday and national holidays.

The oral defense of a project undertaken entirely or in part at a private company may, due tocompany secrets referred to in the project, be held behind closed doors subject to agreement withthe supervisor. The rules are stated in Rules and Regulations, section 3.2 Assessment methods andgrading.

Master thesis, specific rules

There are no programme specific requirements for the master thesis.

Paragraphs from Rules and Regulations

The following paragrahs are part of this programme specification but taken from the collected Rulesand Regulation. The numbering of the paragrahs correpond to the numbering in the Rules andRegulations.

2. Rules for Study

The programs consist of courses, which include lectures, seminars, exercises, projects etc. A coursecan have a duration of more than one semester.

The academic year at DTU has six teaching periods: Two periods of 13 weeks in Fall andSpring each followed by an exam period and two periods of three weeks including exam in Januaryand June, July and August.

Mandatory courses, course content, methods and prerequisites are specified in the specific curriculafor each program. Generally, the months of July and August will not be included in the study plan.

Course descriptions contain:- course- and learning objectives- forms of teaching and learning- requirements, if any, to mandatory attendance, e.g. laboratory exercises- scheduling and duration- recommendations for attendance- requirement for submission of written paper(s) etc. during the course in order to qualify to take theexam

Mandatory BSc Eng and B Eng courses (basic courses) are usually taught in Danish (the exceptionbeing English B Eng programmes). A small amount of English taugth courses will be offered forBSc Eng and B Eng programmes.

MSc courses are taught in English.

2.1 Enrollment for Courses

For BSc Eng and B Eng students enrolled July 1st 2014 or later, special rules apply regardingcourse registration. From July 2015 these rules will apply for all B Eng, BSc and MSc students atDTU. See section 2.1.1.

Students must be enrolled in a program to participate in laboratory assignments, course work, groupwork and to obtain information via CampusNet and teaching material (notes etc.).   ed in a programto participate in laboratory assignments, course work, group work and the like and to obtaininformation via CampusNet and teaching material (notes etc.).

Students cannot enroll in courses for which they have already attained a passing (the grade 02 orabove according to the 7-point grading scale or a pass/fail). Such applications for reenrollment willbe rejected.

Courses are normally held only if at least five students have enrolled. 

Teachers may cancel non-obligatory courses if less than ten students are enrolled, unless otherwisestated in the course descriptions.

It is stated in the course description the type of students, B Eng, BSc Eng, Msc, and OpenUniversity, which can be admitted. Students, who apply for a course which is not part of theirprogramme will be refused.

If both Bachelor of Engineering and BSc- and MSc in Engineering are specified, the course is opento Bachelor of Engineering and BSc- and MSc in Engineering students. In some cases, coursedescriptions specify that courses are reserved for Bachelor of Engineering students but that BSc-and MSc in Engineering students are welcome to fill any vacancies.

Students may enroll for one course only in each timetable slot if admission is limited. Theenrollment system does not prevent you from enrolling in more courses, irrespective of timetableoverlaps. Before the lottery drawing, the Office of Study Programs and Student Affairs willwithdraw your name from courses at random if any overlaps are discovered so that you areregistered for only one course with limited admission (in each timetable slot).

It is the students responsibility to ensure that course registrations are done correctly via CampusNet.

Students in the Bachelor of Engineering and BSc in Engineering programmes starting their firstsemester, as well as part-time students, will be signed up for their courses by the Office for StudyPrograms and Student Affairs: any other enrolment at courses has to be done by the student.You can see deadlines etc. on Portalen, Infosite for Students, 'Deadlines'.

2.1.1 Compulsory Registration for 60 New ECTS Credits per Academic YearB Eng and BSc students admitted on 1st July 2014 or later are required to register for at least 60new ECTS credits per academic year. Students must thus register for 60 ECTS credits per academicyear regardless of whether they still need to pass courses from previous semesters.

Students may apply for an exemption from the requirement for registration for 60 ECTS credits peracademic year if special circumstances apply to the indiviual student, e.g. if the student is an eliteathlete, has an impairment, in the event of documented illness, the death of a close relative, civilduties or other circumstances in relation to the individual student and for which the student is notresponsible.

Students may register for courses equivalent to less than 60 ECTS credits per academic year withoutapplying for an exemption if the students are ahead in respect of the planned study programme. Thismay be the case, for example if students have participated in summer courses.

2.1.1.1 Registration for elective courses/optional courses are bindingFor B Eng and BSc students admitted on 1st July 2014 or later, registration for an electivecourse/optional course is binding, which means that the course must be passed in order for thestudent to complete the study programme. Read more about exam rules in chapter 3.1.2, 'Rulesapplying to B Eng and BSc students admitted in 1st July 2014 or later'.

Students may choose a new elective course/optional course, provided that this takes place within thesupplementary registration period for courses. Registration for a course is then binding, and thecourse will be included as a binding course in the student's study plan (see above). Under specialcircumstances, students may apply for an exemption with a view to switching from one electivecourse to another.

2.2 Course RequirementsPrerequisites and rules for participation are specified in the course descriptions.

Teachers are responsible for ensuring that assignments and other laboratory and workshop activitiestake place under safe conditions. They must therefore provide thorough instructions. Students whofail to show an appreciation of safety issues and/or do not follow instructions may be expelled fromclasses.

Mandatory ConditionsFor reasons of safety, students are required to pass courses specified as mandatory before attendingthe course. You may enroll for the course and take part in a lottery if you have passed the mandatorycourses or are enrolled for examination in the required courses.

Recommended ConditionsThe courses specified are the basic foundation for the classes and students are expected to befamiliar with the academic domains covered by these courses. Students who do not have therecommended conditions have no right to receive academic guidance counseling and may, ifnecessary, be expelled from classes.

2.3. Participation in Limited Admission Courses Withdrawal of Students from Over- and Fully-booked CoursesIt can be stated in the course description that students of certain programmes have priority. Studentsenrolled ind due time will be assigned or participate in draw according to this priority. If nothing isstated in the course description, all students will participate in the draw equally.

Full-time students who have enrolled in due time take part in lotteries take priority over visitingstudents and part-time students.A full-time student for whom a course is a mandatory will havepriority over students for whom the course is not mandatory.

Visiting students, who studies at DTU according to a negotiated agreement between DTU andone or more international universities, in which agreement a the course is mandatory, takes presenceover full-time students, for whom the course is not mandatory as well as over other visiting andpart-time students.

Time Limits regarding Over- and Fullybooked CoursesA study announcement will be distributed no later than one month before the start of the teachingperiod with information about the procedure for the drawing of lots.All students who have registered for a course for which participation will be determined by drawinglots will receive an e-mail after the draw with the status of the draw. There are three status types:

- Place on the course guaranteed- On the waiting list- Lost draw

Students who do not attend classes when the course starts and fail to notify the teacher directly ofsubsequent attendance will not be permitted to keep their enrollment in an over- or fully bookedcourse after the date stated below.

13-week session: After the end of class on the first day of teaching

3-week session: Four hours after course commencement

Their place will be given to the reserve student present with the lowest number on the waiting list.

2.4 Class Participation – Compulsory Assignments

Class ParticipationIn general, class attendance is not compulsory. However, for many courses (practical courses,laboratory courses, etc.) active participation is a requirement to pass the examination. In the case ofprojects, presentation and standing as “opponent” for others’ presentations (in Danish: opponering)may be compulsory. (Compulsory) Assignments etc.Submission of assignments and reports may be non-compulsory, compulsory in order to qualify totake the exam or may form part of the examination. Only home assignments that have been receivedon time can be expected to be assessed.

When using compulsory assignments and tasks during the course in order to qualify to take theexam it is expected- that the course description details, that compulsory tasks are included which do not form the basisfor assessment- that in form and content, tasks are in accordance with the learning objectives of the course- that the students receive formative feedback on the assignments

The one(s) responsible for the course shall inform the students about the criteria for approval of thecompulsory assignments.

2.5 Deadlines for Teaching Material and CurriculaMaterial forming part of the examination curriculum must be available at least three weeks beforethe end of the period of teaching along with the curriculum or other reading lists.

2.6 Amendments to Course Descriptions

Substantial changes in the description of courses must be incorporated no later than:

• 25th June for the 13-week period in the autumn

• 1st November for the 3-week period in January

• 25th November for the 13-week period in the spring

• 15th April for the 3-week period in June, July and August

In exceptional cases, amendments may be made during the semester, provided the teacher and thestudents agree, and provided the amendment is approved by the relevant Board of Studies at thedepartment.

The procedure pertaining to change of e.g. number of ECTS points, schedule placement, form ofteaching or exam, is:

1.The amendment proposed is formulated in writing and submitted for approval to theDepartment Study Board. The proposal is then sent via CampusNet to every enrolled student asa bulletin. This bulletin must clearly state that the amendment is in the nature of a proposal thatwill be implemented unless one or more students object. Students are given at least 14 days torespond.

2.If no objections to the amendment proposed are received, the teacher sends out a new bulletinannouncing that as no objections were received, the proposal has been approved. Amendmentsapproved are added to the course descriptions on DTU’s website at: http://www.kurser.dtu.dk/.

2.7 Specialization Courses, Projects, Portfolio Credit Courses and PhD Courses

2.7.1. Specialization CoursesThe contents of a specialization course is agreed between the student(s) and a DTU-supervisor.Students wishing to enrol in a specialization course must do so at the respective department usingan electronic enrolment form which is then submitted to the Office for Study Programs and StudentAffairs prior to commencement of classes.

The credit point total for a specialization course may be 5-30 credit points with intervals of 2.5credit points. 5 credit points are equivalent to 140 hours’ work. The project period cannot extend sixmonths. The agreement made concerning a specialization course is binding on both parties but maybe amended upon agreement between both parties.

2.7.2. Cooperation with a CompanyA specialization course or a project can be undertaken entirely or in part at a company in Denmarkor abroad. The academic contents must be agreed with the DTU-supervisor. It is the responsibilityof the supervisor to ensure a sufficiently high academic/theoretical level in the project. The projectmust be documented in a report. The credit point total is based solely on the anticipated workloadentailed by the project such that the duration of the placement with the company does not in itselfcarry any credit points.

It is up to students themselves to find a company, but many departments have contacts at severalcompanies.

In DTU's project and internship data base students can also find company projects.

ContractsStudents are recommended to draw up a contract to be signed jointly by the student, supervisor andcompany since all three parties must be in agreement as to the project abstract.

The particulars of the contract should set out the principal details of the project: projecttitle/abstract, specific assignments, expected working hours/hours of attendance, length of stay withthe company, etc. as well as any requirements on the part of the company concerningnon-disclosure.

Each department has a person responsible for contracts who can assist with the preparation of thecontract, see Portalen. We recommend that projects carried out in cooperation with companies beundertaken in the final portion of the studies.

InsuranceDuring a project placement with a company, the insurance taken out by PF does not providecoverage. See section 1.4.b, Insurance during Individual Projects.

2.7.3. Portfolio Credit CoursesBy registering for a Portfolio Credit course, BSc and MSc students have the opportunity to obtain amaximum of 10 ECTS credits in the elective courses group for competencies acquired after theiradmission to DTU, for example acquired through work experience, starting own business, onlinecourses, etc. Students will typically register for a Portfolio Credit course after the competencieshave been achieved.

In the Portfolio Credit course, the students account for the academic/professional competenciesacquired in a written report. The competencies must be at the same or at a higher level than the levelthe students would otherwise achieve on the study programme. A Portfolio Credit course can beequivalent to 5, 7½ or 10 ECTS credits. The students must register for the Portfolio Credit course ata department, and each student must be assigned a DTU supervisor, who determines the evaluationand assessment form.

2.7.4. PhD CoursesMSc in Engineering students may, subject to agreement with the teacher, take PhD courses.Enrolment takes place at the department.

2.8 Illness or Other Legitimate Grounds for AbsenceStudents who, because of illness or other legitimate reasons, are prevented from attending themandatory teaching modules or participating in laboratory or drafting room activities must notifythe teacher responsible as soon as possible. Students may apply to repeat the mandatory teachingmodules or replace them with a similar activity, but such students are only entitled to take theactivity again the next time the course is offered. They may also be required to submit a medicalcertificate at their own expense. (See section 3.5 Illness and Examinations).

2.9 Evaluation of TeachingThe teaching for all courses is evaluated via CampusNet at the end of each semester. The studentsfill in the forms anonymously. Evaluations are processed by the Department Study Board.

If the content might pertain too private matters, they must be treated as confidential. This means,with the current forms at DTU, that form A, with the general evaluation of the course, is notconfidential. Forms B and C are confidential, meaning that they can only be accessed by staff with aprofessional interest, e.g. Programme Directors, and members of the relevant Department StudyBoard.

2.10 Complaints regarding Teaching and GuidanceStudents who are dissatisfied with the teaching for a course or with the guidance received e.g. inconnection with a project are to contact their teacher/supervisor immediately to resolve the matter.The faster action is taken, the better are the chances of resolving the matter efficiently. If thisenquiry does not resolve the issue, the following rules are laid down for bringing complaintsregarding teaching/guidance:

• Complaints must include grounds for dissatisfaction and must be brought at least two weeksafter the conclusion of the course of study. Complaints must be written and submitted tothe Department Study Board.

• The Department Study Board will inform the Head of Department and ask theteacher/supervisor in question for his/her comments. See The Public Administration Act(Forvaltningsloven), chapter 5.

• As soon as possible the Department Study Board will forward an answer to the student withcopy to the Head of Department. If the Study Board does not find in favour of the student thedecision should held a guidance of complaint. See below.

• The Head of Department will, based on the answer from the Department Study Board, makeany decision needed regarding the teacher's service and duties.

• If the student is unable to accept the decision of the Department Study Board, he/she cansubmit a complaint to the Dean of the program within two weeks. The complaint should besent to the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs by mail to [email protected] -the student email account is to be used. The complaint must submitted in writing stating thereasons for the complaint and the documents from the former complaint should be enclosed.

The Dean’s decision is final, unless a student maintains that there are legal discrepancies, in whichcase the student may appeal to the Danish Agency for Higher Education no later than two weeksfrom the date on which the decision was announced to the student. The complaint is to be handed into the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs, [email protected] who will forwardit to the Agency.

3. Rules for Examinations

Many of the rules referred to in the following chapter implements rules dertermined in MinisterialOrder on University Examinations and Grading (the Examination Order), BEK 666 24/06-2012 orBEK 670 19/06-2014 and in Bekendtgørelse om prøver og eksamen i erhvervsrettede videregåendeuddannelser, BEK 714 27/06-2012 and BEK 1519 16/12-2013.

Each course is finalized by an assessment. The objective of the examination is to assess the extent towhich the student's qualifications comply with the academic objectives stipulated for the course orthe project.

Course descriptions show:

3.1 Enrolment and WithdrawalFor B Eng and BSs students enrolled on the 1st of July 2014 or later, specific rules apply regardingenrollment for exams. From July 2015 these rules will apply for all B Eng, BSc and MSc students atDTU. See section 3.1.2 below.Enrolment deadlines:

• Winter examinations: 15 October - 1 November

• Summer examinations: 1 april - 15 April

All activities that make up part of the program must be assessed. To obtain a grade, you must beenrolled for examination for the activity. All course enrolments are automatically transferred asenrolments for examinations. Students may not attend an examination or have work such as a Thesisassessed unless they are enrolled for the course examination. Students wishing to attendexaminations in other/more courses than those transferred via course enrolment details must enrolvia CampusNet, e.g. resits or makeup examinations.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that examination enrolments are correct.

Students may not enrol in courses for which they have already earned a grade of two or above(7-point grading scale), pass (on a scale of pass/fail) or approved (on a grading system ofapproved/not approved).

Students have three examination attempts in each course. Dispensation for additional attempts maybe applied for on grounds of special circumstances. (See section 4.3 Dispensation).

Although several versions of the same course may be available, with different course numbers,students have a total of three examination attempts only.

You may withdraw from an examination no later than 15 weekdays before the first day of theexamination session. After this withdrawal deadline, your enrolment will count as an examinationattempt. Note that specific rules apply for B Eng and BSc students enrolled on the 1st of July 2014or later regarding withdrawal from exams.

If a student is more than 30 minutes late for a written examination, he will not be allowed toparticipate in the examination. The duration of examination is not extended for students who arelate.

If you are more than 30 minutes late for a written examination you will be denied admittance to theexam. Even though you show up late the examination duration will not be extended.

If you fail to attend an examination for which you are enrolled, this counts as an examinationattempt. Failing to attend does not mean that you are entitled to demand that an examination be heldduring the subsequent semester. However, you may participate if an examination is held for otherreasons.

All examination results will appear in your records but your examination diploma will state all theexaminations passed within your curriculum.

Special rules apply regarding examination enrolment for visiting students and students in part-timeprograms. (See sections: Visiting Students and Part-time Programs, Competence Development.)

The bachelor project and the Master Thesis are also completed with exams but signing up for theseare done by report from the department of the Office of Study Programs and Student Affairs. Forfurther infomation, see Section 11 of the general curriculum for the program.

3.1.2 Rules Applying to B Eng and BSc Students Admitted on 1st July 2014 or laterStudents are automatically registered for exam in a course when they register for the course. Thisapplies to compulsory as well as elective courses. All course registrations thus automatically triggerexam registrations. Withdrawal of registration for exams is not possible, and an examination attemptis used even if the student does not participate in the exam.

Upon application, and under special circumstances, DTU may grant an exemption from the rulestipulating that withdrawal of registration for exams is not allowed.

Students who have not passed a course or project at the first exam attempt will automatically beregistered for the second exam attempt in the next reexamination period of the course. This alsoapplies if an elective course/optional course is not passed. It is up to the student to decide when athird reexamination shall take place.

3.2 Assessment Methods and Grading Examinations must reflect the overall objective and contents of the course. They may be written,practical or oral or a combination of these, e.g. as a series of mid-term exams during the course ofstudy.

When approving the course description, the Department Study Board determines the assessmentmethod, including part-exams, to be used for the course.

Students will be assessed individually. In connection with both an individual exam and a groupexam, an individual assessment must be made of the students' performance, and separategrades must be awarded.

3.2.1 Passing Exams and Part-examinationsThe student has passed an exam when he or she has been given a 02 or higher at the 7-point gradingscale or "passed".

All mandatory activities (except exercises that cannot be assessed or compulsory written papers as acondition for taking the exam) must form part of the exam.

A course can be assessed either by overall assessment or by a weighted average of thepart-exams. Using overall assessment, one and only one grade is given for the course. If grades forthe part-exams are given, the grade for the course is the weighted average, rounded off to the nearestgrade on the 7-point grading scale.

All part-exams must be attended in the same course term, unless otherwise stated in the programschedule or course description. Part-exams passed cannot be re-examed in the same course term. Ifa course has been passed, no part-exams may be retaken. If a course is failed, all part-exams mustbe attended again. The Department Study Board may grant students dispensation for part-examsalready passed to replace part-exams in a subsequent course term. The Study Board may also grantstudents dispensation to attend part-re-exams in the same course term or soon thereafter.

A course is considered passed when 1) the average for the part-examinations is at least a grade of 02without rounding off, and 2) no part-grade is below 00.

For some courses it might be relevant to deviate from the rule above or to stipulate even stricterrules. Such deviations must be approved be the Department Study Board and the Dean. Thedevaiting rules must be stated in the course description.

If a student has showed up to a part-exam at a course, the exam for the course has been commencedand an overall grade shall be given even though the student does not attend the followingpart-exams. If the student does not attend a part-exam, where a grade is given, the part-exam willcount in the overall grade with a part-grade of -3 and the course will be failed. This applies too, ifthe student does not attend an examination which is required in order to make an individualassessment of a performance, e.g. a group-project, as the assessment of the individual contributionto the group-project depends on the following individual examination.

A complaint can be submitted on a part-grade only, if a change of the part-grade will give a changeof the overall grade for the course. A complaint cannot be submitted until the grade for the coursehas been given to the student.

3.2.2 Individual Assessment of Group Projects ect.Exam in a course can comprise written work, reports, assignments and the like completed duringthe course of study. Written work may be produced individually or in groups.

There are two different models for the individual assessment for students that have worked ingroups (see below). Before starting up the project the one responsible for the course / the examinershall inform the students whether to individualize their project or not. In order to grade a groupproject on its own the individual contributions of the students have to be marked in the report.Students stating that they have contributed equally to the report without marking which sectionsthey individually are responsible for does not fulfill the requirement of individualization. Thestudent's individual sections have to be clearly marked in the common report.

Provided that the individual contributions are clearly markedin the common report, a subsequent individual oral examination is not required. The studentscontribution to the report can in itself be graded.

b. Group project without individual contributions statedA project, where the individual contributions of the students are not stated, must always be followedby an oral examination. This examination can either be an individual exam or a group exam. Nogrades or other assessment can be given based on the group project alone. The student will beawarded a grade or other assessment based on an overall assessment of the group project and theoral examination.

DTU has stipulated the maximum number of students participating in group projects to six. The oneresponsible for the course can decide another maximum number of students in the group as long asthe group does not extend six students.

Rules for the final project at B Eng, the bachelorproject and the master thesis is furthermorestated in the general curricula.

3.2.3 Different examination formsRules for typical exams can be seen below. Other forms of assessment can be approved by therelevant department study board.

Oral examinationGenerally, all oral examinations are open to the public, but may be held behind closed doors underspecial circumstances. Oral examinations may extend over several days. Any dates in addition tospecified examination days are to be agreed in consultation with the students. (See section 2.6Amendments to Course Descriptions).

Oral group examinationAn oral examination can be organised as a group exam. Group exam will often be used in relation togroup projects. DTU has stipulated the maximum number of students participating in group projectsto six.

In connection with an oral group exam, the individual student must be examined in such a way as toensure that an individual assessment is made of the student's performance. When organising an oralgroup exam, the examiner must ensure that the time allocated for the examination is adapted to thenumber of students sitting the examination. The whole project group is present during theexamination.

The student is entitled to have his or her grade awarded in private with no other students present.

The possibility of choosing an individual oral exam instead of a group exam will only be possiblefor students with special pedagogical needs. Decision regarding this issue is made by the teacherresponsible for the course.

Practical Examinations Carried out in Class or as a Final ExaminationCourses comprising practical assignments (laboratory courses, workshop courses, etc.) may besubject to continuous assessment or may include a practical examination held at the end of thecourse. Continuous assessment is based on approved criteria announced to the students at thebeginning of the course. The individual performance of each student must be assessed. Thecontribution of each student must be clear from the work.

Written ExaminationsWritten examinations are always completed on an individual basis. Their duration is specified in thecourse description.

Question papers must be written in the language of instruction. For examinations where all tuitionand teaching material is in English, the question papers may be in English only. Where teaching isin both Danish and English, the question papers must be provided in both languages. Answerpapers may be in the language/languagues of instruction. The external examiner(s) can allow thatanswer papers may be submitted in another languague. There are special rules for the master thesis.

Departments are responsible for preparing question papers.If the course examination is external thequestions must also be approved by the external examiner(s) who will be helping to assess theanswer papers. In conjunction with compiling written question papers, the intended weight of theindividual questions during assessment may be stated as a guideline for students.

If fewer than ten students enroll for a written examination, the teacher can change the assessmentmethod to that of an oral examination up to one week after the deadline for enrollment for theexamination. This is done with the appropriate consideration to students, who were expecting awritten examination. The Department must notify students of any such change in assessmentmethod. If the type of examination is changed to an oral examination, the teacher may request thatstudents contact the Department regarding planning of the examination. If the teacher and allthe students enrolled agree, a substitute assessment method may be approved for use.

3.3 Use of Aids during ExaminationsGenerally, examination papers should be formulated so that they cannot be deemed an examinationin the use of aids. Emphasis must therefore be placed on testing students’ academic knowledge.

Information and data may only be obtained legitimately during examinations; therefore it is notallowed to access the Internet or use a mobile phones etc. The answers to the examination paper thatare handed in must have been produced during the exam. Diagrams, models etc. which have beenbrought along will not be part of the assessment. A few aids which do not contribute with newinformation during the exam, but which can ensure correct form and calculation, can be broughtalong.

It is always allowed to bring ordinary dictionaries, i.e. the Orthographical Dictionary(retskrivningsordbogen), the Dictionary of Contemporary Danish (nu-dansk ordbog) and languagedictionaries equivalent to the red dictionaries from Gyldendal (a Danish publisher), but no technicalor clinical dictionaries.

It is always allowed to bring a calculator, with two exceptions: 1) If the Department has decided thatcalculators cannot be used during the exam, and 2) if the Department provides one for the exam. Inboth cases the exception must be specified in the course description.

The department can put a laptop to your disposal at the exam. In this case you cannot bring yourown laptop.

You cannot bring a printer at the exam.

The use of aids at examinations falls into three categories, which are specified in the coursedescription:

1. No aids permitted other than ordinary dictionaries and calculators (But a Departmentcan decide that it is not permitted to bring a calculator. The Department can provide its owncalculators for the exam if it so wish)

2. Written aids permitted (i.e. textbooks, notes, old assignments etc. are permitted but technicalaids are prohibited). (But a Department can decide that it is not permitted to bring acalculator. The Department can provide its own calculators for the exam if it so wish)

3. All aids permitted (i.e. in addition to written aids, laptops and tablets are permitted)

Calculators, laptops and other electronic equipment may not in any way be programmed, equippedor set to communicate with others inside or outside the examination room. Specifically a laptop maynot be able to access the Internet through the telephone network.

Details regarding aids permitted in the written examinations are stated in the course description.

Students are personally responsible for any aids brought along and as a rule DTU does not makeavailable any kind of facilities for their use. No extra time will be granted if the aids taken toexaminations malfunction, run out of power or the like.

Special rules apply for students under the SPS scheme.  To ensure that the SPS students are tested atthe same academic level as other students, they might need special aids. These aids must beapproved and permission to use any necessary aids - other than the aids described above - must beobtained for each exam. An example of special aids could be that the SPS students might be givenquestions in electronic form besides the written and to submit their answers electronically. Theelectronic form is no more than a supplementing aid. The questions the SPS student shall answer isstill the ones given on paper.

3.4 Extra Time at ExaminationsDTU can exempt from the specified time and other conditions for written exams

- for students with reduced functionality (e.g. dyslexia, illness - provided that the illness caninfluence the student's performance at the examination) - for students whose qualifying exam and mother tongue is not Danish (for exams solely inDanish) and who have studied for less than one year in Denmark (all three conditions must bemet) and - for students with such difficulties that DTU deems extra time necessary to test the students onequal terms with the other students (e.g. students in the last month of pregnancy or who arebreastfeeding a child not yet 6 months old). Examination anxiety is not a valid reason for extra timeat examinations.

There must not be any lowering of the academic level of the examination

Applications for extensions for 2- and 4-hour exams should be submitted to the Office for StudyPrograms and Student Affairs before the final enrolment deadline for examinations (winterexaminations: 1 November, and summer examinations: 15 April).  For exams conducted at thedepartment, applications should be submitted to the department.

3.5 Illness and ExaminationsStudents, who, due to illness, are unable to attend or have to leave an examination, must send amedical certificate (“lægeerklæring”) to the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs no laterthan one week after the examination session. Examinations during the period of illness willotherwise count as examination attempts. Medical certificates are to be obtained at students’ ownexpense.

Students who become ill during the examination itself must notify a supervisor or examiner beforeleaving the examination.

The following rules apply regarding medical certificates: You must contact your doctor on the dayof the examination at the latest, by phone if necessary. An “unfit for work” certificate(“uarbejdsdygtighedserklæring”) should be issued.

If the illness is specified on the medical certificate to be “of short duration” (“af kortere evarighed”),the certificate is valid for 14 days from the date of issue. If the illness is “of long duration” (“aflængere varighed”), the certificate is valid for four weeks from the date of issue.

Examinations for the course(s) covered by a medical certificate are normally completed during thenext examination session. (See section 3.8 Resits and Make-up Examinations due to Illness)

If, because of the documented illness, you are unable to meet one of the study deadlines specified,the deadline is extended without application until the next examination is held for the course inquestion (typically the next reexamination period). However, if you are also ill at the nextexamination, you must apply for a dispensation in order to have the study deadline extended again.

If an examination is completed despite ill health, it will count as an examination attempt.

If you become unable to attend an examination due to the serious illness of a close friend or relative,or if a serious event occurs that may affect your performance during the examination, you can applyto have the examination attempt annulled by sending relevant documentation to the Office for StudyPrograms and Student Affairs.

If you become ill while completing your B Eng Project, Bachelor Project, or Master Thesis, pleasenotify your supervisor immediately. If you wish to extend the project period for reasons of ill health,the Department may grant a short extension of a maximum of three weeks. In the case of long-termillness, you by application can be granted extension upon the basis of a medical certificate. Youshould contact the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs. (See section 4.3. Dispensation)

3.6 External Examiners and Confidentiality The course description states whether there is to be an external examiner. As a rule, externalexaminers are present at assessment of Bachelor projects, Master Theses, examination projects andpreliminary projects for examination projects

The Ministerial Order on Examinations states that both external examiners and supervisors, whileconsidering their assessments, must make notes on performance and grading. These notes are forpersonal use when preparing a statement in response to any future complaints.

Projects carried out entirely or in part at private companies may include industrial secrets,know-how and the like. This work must therefore be treated as confidential. Subsequent oralpresentations may be closed to the public. An agreement may be made whether the report should bepublicly available. Terms regarding confidentiality and presentations behind closed doors may beagreed with the supervisor and Head of Department. 3.8 Re-examinations and Make-up Examinations due to IllnessIn 2015 there will be a re-examination period in May (reexamination regarding the standardexamination in December) and a re-examination period in August (reexamination regarding thestandard examination in May). Courses hold only examinations in the standard examination periodand in the following re-examination period.

The assessment method used for a re-examination may differ from that employed for the ordinaryexamination.

You can find information on re-examination of part-exams in chapter 3.2.1, 'Passing Exams andPart-examinations'.

Students who have failed or have been ill for an examination during the examination period inwhich they should have completed a program of study may resit the examination during the sameexamination period or in immediate extension of this period. If a student wish to resit, he/she haveto contact the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs no later than two weeks after thegrade issue date. The student must also contact the relevant institute immediately after the approvalof the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs.

3.9 Cheating at ExaminationsDTU requires that students at DTU demonstrate independence in their work and that the examalways reflects the students' own work.DTU considers it cheating if an examinee submits work that is not a result of his or her ownindependent merit or if prohibited aids are utilized at an examination. Similarly, DTU considers itcheating for any student to assist another student in breaching the examination rules. Examples ofcheating at examinations include plagiarism such as copying the work of others or copying ownanswers from previous examinations. Cheating is also any communication concerning examinationquestions during individual, supervised examinations and fabricated data in laboratory experiments.

Written assignments may be presented for assessment once only. Assignments previously assessedat DTU or other academic institutions may not be submitted for renewed assessment irrespective ofthe grade earned.

The rules regarding citations and references to sources in written assignments are that citations mustbe indicated by quotation marks at the start and at the end of the citation and the source of thecitation must be referred to either in brachets or in a note to the text. When not citing directly butbasing the discussion on a specific source, the source must be referred to either in brackets or a noteto the text.

The Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs must be notified on suspicion of any violation ofthe rules regarding examinations. Any violation may lead to sanctions.(See section 9.2 Disciplinarymeasures)

Following a hearing of the student(s) reported, DTU’s Office for Study Programs and StudentAffairs will reach a decision on the matter. If the student maintains that there are any legaldiscrepancies in the decision, the student may bring a complaint to DTU within a period of twoweeks. These rules are laid down by the Rector of DTU in pursuance of section 14 (9) of the Act onUniversities and Other Institutions of Higher Education (LBK 367 of March 25th 2013).

3.10 Examination complaints The deadline for bringing complaints regarding examinations is two weeks after the grades areposted on CampusNet. For oral examinations, the deadline is two weeks after the examination isheld.

Before submitting an examination complaint, you are strongly encouraged to contact your examinerfor an explanation of your grade. Please note that the two week deadline for submitting a complaintstill applies.

Examination complaints must be written and include a well-reasoned explanation for yourcomplaint. It is not sufficient just to state that you are dissatisfied with your grade; such a complaintwill be returned to you and dismissed if no well-reasoned complaint is then submitted. Complaintsmust be submitted to the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs via email to [email protected]; you have to use your student email ([email protected]). Complaintsmust contain the student’s name, address, student ID number and course number for the course inquestion.

The Office for Study Programs and Student Affairs forward the complaint to the teacher andexternal examiner, who must submit an opinion on the assessment  ect. within two weeks. Whenyou have received the teacher and external examiner's statement, you have one week to comment onthat. Afterwards the decision is made by the Office for Study Programmes and Student Affairs. Thedecision is based on your complaint, the statement  of the assessors and your comments, and it canbe one of the following: 1) an offer of re-assessment by new assessors (however, not in oral exams),2) an offer of re-examination by new assessors, or 3) not to find in favour of your complaint.

If you are offered a new assessment or a re-examination you have two weeks to accept the offer. Ifyou accept the offer, you must keep in mind that a new assessment or re-examination may result in alower grade.

If your complaint is rejected, you can appeal the decision. The deadline is two weeks from the dateon which you receive notification of the assessors’ decision. Appeals must be submitted to theOffice for Study Programs and Student Affairs to [email protected]. The decision is made bya board of appeals which consists of two external examiners, a teacher and a student from thesubject area. In its decision the board of appeals can decide 1) to make an offer of a re-assessmentby new assessors (however, not in oral exams), 2) to make an offer for a re-exam or 3) not to find infavour of the complaint. The decision cannot be referred to any other administrative authorityregarding academic matters.

3.11 Dating of DiplomasIf you complete your studies with a B Eng Project, Bachelor Project or Master Thesis, the date onyour diploma will be the date of the oral presentation. Due to the possibility of unemployment,

students are advised to register with an unemployment insurance fund no later than 14 days aftertheir diploma is dated.

If your final points are obtained for courses, the date on your diploma will be the date on which thelast course was passed.

4. Credit Point Transfer, Studying Abroad,Dispensation, Leave, etc.

4.1 Preapproval of Credit Points and Credit Point TransferCredit points from studies completed from a different (Danish or foreign) higher educationprogramme may be transferred, provided the course is equivalent to one of DTU’s courses or is of acorresponding academic level (university standard). However, not all courses may be transferred.Credit points from courses that fall outside the academic domain of a programme may not betransferred. 

For B Eng programmes courses must as a minimum be on B Eng level from an engineering college,professional university college or a universityFor BSc programmes courses must be on university level.For MSc programmes courses must be on masterlevel.

It is not possible to transfer credit points/courses from the qualifiying examination /degree.

It is not possible to transfer a master's thesis from one MSc programme to another MSc programme.

Credit point transfer may result in amended curriculum requirements, e.g. required passes anddeadlines for completing studies.

Course credit points transferred to DTU must be assessed to be worth at least a grade 02, “pass” or“approved”.

Students on B Eng programmes and BSc programmes need to, as a minimum, to pass courses andprojects at DTU, including the final project, corresponding to 90 credit points in order to obtain adiploma for a full time degree at DTU.

Students on MSc programmes need to, as a minimum, to pass courses and projects af DTU,including the final project, corresponding to 60 credit points to obtain the diploma for a full degreeat DTU.

With regard to credit point transfer, a distinction is drawn between courses that fall within or outsidethe specific, academic domain of your studies at DTU. Provided that the courses are applicable toengineering on an overall basis you may have obtained the following ECTS points outside thespecific subject areas:

• 15 ECTS points under the Bachelor Degree 

• 10 ECTS points under the MSc program (recorded to the extent that one has made use of thepossibility of bachelor courses - cf. the general curriculum for the MSc program)

Language and culture courses will only be approved if they are attended in relation to af studyabroad semester, and they may only account for maxiumum 5 ECTS points and will be included aspart of the general relevant courses as stated above.

The grade from passed courses will not be transferred to the student's DTU diploma as a result ofcredit point transfer. The assessment 'Pass' will be transferred.

A credit transfer may cause that the total credits earned in the programme does not correspond withthe credit specification of the courses at DTU. Further, the passing of DTU courses of 7,5 ECTScredits may have the consequence that the study plan only meets the requirements of a full degree(210, 180 or 120 ECTS) by taking a 2,5 ECTS course. DTU only offers a few of these. Thus, in thiscase the student can enroll for a 5 ECTS credit course even though the student will exceed theprescribed credits of a full degree (210, 180 or 120 ECTS).

Credit points from academic activities completed more than five years prior to admission may notbe transferred. However, dispensation may be granted in special cases. The same applies to coursesfollowed at DTU in connection with readmission or new admission to a DTU programme.

B Eng students who have completed a higher technical study programme may apply for a transfer ofcredit points from components of this programme. Decision is made by the programme coordinator.More information is available from the Student Councelling Service.

4.1.1. Credit transfer from previously non-completede study programmes at the same level(pre-commencement credit transfer)Upon admission  to DTU's B Eng, BSc and MSc programmes, students are obliged to apply forcredit transfer for passed  subject elements (courses etc.) from all previous non-completed studyprogrammes at the same level. This may, for example, be the case if an applicant to a BScprogramme has previously been admitted to another bachelor programme at anoter universitywithout having completed the programme.

Guidelines on the submission of applications can be found below in the section 'Submission  ofapplication'.

If it is deemed, that credit transfer for subjects elements can be granted to the group of mandatorycourses, the student will get the credit transfer. If it is deemed that credit transfer for subjectelements can be granted to the group of elective courses/optional courses, the student must deciedwhether or not they want the credit transfer. If the student chooce to get the credit for subjectelements to the group of elective courses the students' freedom  of choice will be limited.

If a student does not submit an application for credit transfer for previously passed subject elementsat the same level or submits incorrect or incomplete information, DTU may withdraw its offer of aplace on the study programme.

4.1.2. Pre-approved credit transferStudents may apply for pre-approved credit transfer for planned subject elements from anotheruniversity or another higher education in Denmark or abroad. In connection with the application forpre-approved credit transfer, the student undertakes to submit documentation to DTU to showwhether the programme elements for which pre-approved credit transfer has been granted have beenpassed or failed. At the same time, students give their implied consent to DTU requesting thenecessary information from the host institution  if the students are unable to procure thedocumentation themselves.

The application for pre-approved credit transfer must contain documentation to the effect that thecourse is at a level corresponding to DTU's level, and must also provide an indication of theworkload. The pre-approved credit transfer ensures that students are registered as studying activelyduring the semester in which they are not registered for courses at DTU due to study stays ect.elsewhere.

If the pre-approved courses are not offered by the host institution after all, of if the student cannotbe registered for the pre-approved courses, the student must as far as possible take other courses atthe host institution corresponding to one full semester. The student is responsible for and is obligedto initiate the drafting of a new study plan and for submitting an application for pre-approved credittransfer for the new courses.

All courses passed and ECTS credits for which pre-approved credit transfer has been granted mustsubsequently be transferred into the study programme. The student therefore cannot apply for credittransfer for some of the courses passed only.

4.1.3. Submission of applicationApplications for credit point transfer must be accompanied by course description and documentedproof of having passed the course(s). If you have no preliminary approval, your application mustalso include documented proof that the teaching is of university standard as well as a description ofthe workload involved. 

The overall evaluation of applications is conducted by the Department for Study Programmes andStudent Affairs. Applications with an element of doubt are processed by the DispensationCommittee. To apply for credit transfer please go to http://www.merit.dtu.dk/. Students in all disciplines (including 2-year MSc programmes) have the option of studying abroad.A comprehensive description of the study opportunities and application deadlines are provided onPortalen under 'Study Abroad'.  The site also lists the universities with which DTU has studentexchange agreements. You may also contact the Student Counselling Service.

The mandatory engineering traineeships in the Bachelor of Engineering programme may becompleted abroad. See the sections on traineeships in the general curriculum of the Bachelor ofEngineering.

Students may apply to DTU for financial support for studies abroad, provided the studies inquestion result in credit points or otherwise form an integral component of their program at DTU.

Applications to DTU's scolarships for Exchange Semesters/Intership abroad due continuously.

For the Erasmus Scholarship the deadline is on 14th March for the following fall semester and on15th November for the remaining grants in the following spring semester. 

Students wishing to be considered for scholarships under the Erasmus program and DTU’sinternationalization fund must meet the following requirements:

• You must be enrolled as a full-time student at DTU

• You must have earned at least 60 ECTS credit points at your B Eng or BSc programme,equivalent to one year of full-time study. At masters programmes, you must have obtained atleast 20 ECTS credit points, if you have not formerly completed a programme at DTU. 

• BSc- and MSc in Engineering students and students with individual study plans and graduatestudents must have earned at least 20 ECTS credit points on the BSc- and MSc in Engineeringprogramme at DTU.

• You may apply for a maximum of 12 months of assistance for studies/traineeships abroad.Graduate students may receive funding for a maximum of 6 months (equalling 30 ECTS creditpoints). For Erasmus applicants, the minimum study period abroad is 3 months. For otherapplicants, the minimum study period abroad is one month, and minimum 3 weeks for summerschools.

• You must be a full-time student during your stay abroad, i.e. study the standard number ofcredit points necessary to ensure that the duration of your studies does not require extension. Inother words, you must attend courses and complete specialization courses, project work orapproved traineeships while studying abroad.  

• Students applying for Erasmus programmes are not required to pay tuition fees to their hostuniversity.

• Students applying for Erasmus programmes must have earned at least 60 credit points,equivalent to one year of full-time study, in order to be considered for scholarships under theErasmus programme.

Citizens of countries other than Denmark cannot expect to be granted a scholarship to study in theircountry of citizenship.      

Scholarship applications can be printed from 'Study Abroad', or obtained from the InternationalStudent Counselors or Study Information. Furthermore see other sholarships on Portalen.

4.3 DispensationStudents who fail to meet the deadlines specified in the curriculum, or who fail their thirdexamination attempt for a mandatory course or other part of the programme, may continue theirstudies only if they obtain dispensation. DTU may grant dispensation from these rules on groundsof special circumstances. In accordance with the Executive Order on examinations, assessment andcertification, lack of academic aptitude is not within the definition of special circumstances.

DTU may withdraw students who do not meet curriculum requirements unless they have obtaineddispensation. The students in question will always receive prior notice by student mail.

Students seeking dispensation while studying are advised to obtain the leaflet “Dispensation”(Applying for dispensation) from the Central Student Guidance or from 'Study Abroad'.

Applications for dispensation must include both the grounds for the request and a realisticcurriculum for future studies. Students are advised to prepare a new curriculum in consultation witha student guidance counselor. If dispensation for an additional examination attempt is granted, theexamination attempt must be executed at the earliest opportunity. Students seeking dispensation ongrounds of illness may be required by DTU to provide proof in the form of a medical certificateobtained at their own expense.

Applications for dispensation must be sent to the Office for Study Programs and Student Affairsfrom you student mail to [email protected].

4.4 Leave of Absence

Students may apply for a leave of absence without justification provided theyhave passed examinations that are equivalent to one year of study (60 ECTS credit points) in theprogram for which they are enrolled - for MSc students the requirement is 30 ECTS credit points.During the entire duration of their studies, students may have a maximum of one academic year ofleave without justification. Applications for leave of absence may be made either once for an entireyear, or twice with each period lasting one semester. Leaves of absence may also be sought onspecial grounds, e.g. due to the birth of a baby, illness or national service.

Students who are in the midst of writing a final project will not be granted a leave of absence unlessthey have a well-documented, special reason.  

Students who fail their third examination attempt in a mandatory course or project or who fail toobserve a deadline must obtain dispensation to continue their studies before applying for a leave ofabsence.

All academic activities must cease during a leave of absence. During the semester in which you areon leave, you may not attend courses, examinations or submit final projects, irrespective of whetheryour leave has expired.

During leave of any nature, any funding from the State Education Grants and Loan Scheme (SU)will cease and deadlines within your course of study will be extended by the duration of your leave(calculated in whole semesters).

In order to take part in elections for governing bodies, students must be enrolled the first day of themonth in which the election is announced and continue as a student while the election is held.While on a leave of absence lasting more than six months, students may exercise their right to voteand preserve their electability only if their period of leave expires no later than the commencementof the term in office.

While on leave, you have an obligation to read bulletins regarding your studies published by DTU atwww.dtu.dk and CampusNet.

If, during the course of your leave of absence, you are admitted to another study program, you mustwithdraw from one of the programs when your leave expires, as you may only be enrolled as anactive student in one program at a time.

Applications for leave of absence must be submitted to the Office for Study Programs and StudentAffairs no later than three weeks into the period of leave requested. Special application forms maybe printed from Portalen, http://portalen.dtu.dk/Studerende/Blanketter.aspx or obtained fromStudent Counselling.

4.5. Change of Programme/EducationIf you wish to change to another programme or education at DTU you can apply for one of thefollowing options:

When changing between the BSc and the B Eng education you must apply for admission - no matterhow many ECTS points you have passed - as the BSc Eng and the B Eng are two differenteducations. You may have to apply through www.optagelse.dk

2) Change of Programme on BSc or B Eng (passed less than 60 ECTS points)For a summer readmission you need to apply through www.optagelse.dk. Remember to state thatyou are already admitted into an education at DTU. 

Application for winter admission is submitted using one of the following forms: 'Retningsskift forbachelorstuderende' or 'Retningsskift for diplomingeniørstuderende' on Portalen under 'Infosite forstuderende' Documentation that state the fact that you meet any entrance requirements and possibleGPA requirements for the programme needs to be enclosed along with your application.

In order to change programme, it is a requirement that the student has passed 60 ECTS points. Incase the student has less than 60 ECTS points the student need to apply for dispensation togetherwith the application. A dispensation will only be granted if there are available slots at the exactstudy level and programme you wish to change for.

Applications to change programme in the Summer as well as in the Winter will be processedindividually and processed by the Office for Student Programmes and Student Affairs. 

3) Change of Programme: BSc or B Eng (passed more than 60 ECTS points)When you have passed courses equivalent to the first year (min. 60 ECTS points) of the programmeyou wish to change to you can apply for a change of programme without seeking readmission. Thechange of programme is only possible if there are available slots at the exact study level andprogramme you apply for. You must fulfill the admission requirements for the programme as well asan possible GPA requirement equivalent to the average required at the time of admission. In theevent of more applicants than available slots, the slots will be allocated by descending GPA. 

Gudidance on how to apply either September or February is found above under 2).

4) Change of programme: MScYou can apply for a change of master programme by filling out and submitting the application formfor MSc Programmes found here. You will need to state that you are changing programme. 

A change of master programme entails the same consequences as a change of BSc and B Engprogramme. Read above.

4.5.1. Consequences of change of programme/education

Student Identity Card  After a change of programme you are still enrolled in the same overall education as before.Therefore you do not need a new student identity card. Your passwords to "Portalen" andCampusNet also remains unchanged.

Change of education requires a new student identity card which will be sent to you.

Previously Passed Courses

The courses which you have previously passed, while in your former programme, will count in yournew programme as compulsory. If it is deemed, that some of the courses can count as elective

courses, you must decide whether or not you want the courses transfered to your new programme. Ifyou choose so, your ability to choose elective courses will then be reduced.

Credit points from academic activities on DTU completed more than five years prior to change ofprogramme may not be transferred. However, dispensation may be granted in special cases.

Study Start/Education Time LimitsTime of Study Start is the same in your new programme as in the old one. This means that your arenot given new time deadlines in relation to the time limits of the education.

Time of Study Start is not the same when changing education. This means that your are given newtime deadlines in relation to the time limits of the education.

Course Registration/DrawIt's your responsibility to register for the courses you wish to take in the new programme/education.If you apply for a change of programme after the deadline it cannot be guaranteed that yourapplication has been processed before the course registration deadline and you will therefore notfigure in an eventual draw.

State Education Grant (SU)You do not need to reapply for the State Education Grant as the grant follows the education. YourState Education Grant thus continues on you "SU-klippekort" wherefore you need to fulfil the samtcredit point requirements as before the change. The credit point requirements can be found inSection 5 of the Rules and Regulations in the Study Handbook.  

When changing to another education it is important that you reapply for the State Education Grant(SU) as the grant follows the education.

4.5.2. Deadlines for Change of Education/Programme: B Eng and BScIf you want a change effective by September 1, the application deadline is July 5. You will receive areply on July 30 at the latest. If you want a change effective by February 1, the application deadlineis December 1. You will receive a reply shortly before Christmas.

Applications received after the deadlines will be continually processed but without a guaranteedreply deadline. You can apply for a change of education/programme until the first week of thesemester, applications received later will be considered applications for the next semester.

4.6 Withdrawal from StudiesStudents wishing to withdraw from studies at DTU must contact the Central Student Guidance.

You cannot be enroled at more than one full-time programme at a time, unless it is a a guest studentin order to have courses transferred to your home institution.

4.7 ReadmittanceIf you have withdrawn from your study and wish to be readmitted at the same programme, you mustsubmit an application no earlier than two months before study start and no later than one week afterstudy start. Admission and enrolment shall not take place, however, until five months after thederegistration at the earliest.

If you have been withdrawn by DTU for study-related reasons, your application has to include anapplication for a dispensation regarding the cause of your withdrawal.

4.8 Passing from B Eng or BSc programmes to masterprogrammesIn order to ease the transition between the bachelor programme and master programme and to avoidany prolongation of your study, you can - in the final semester of the bachelor programme - applyfor exemption to take extra courses relevant to the master programme you wish to takeafterwards. DTU may register students for courses corresponding to 30 ECTS points on a master'sprogramme if DTU deems that the student possesses academic qualifications to complete and passthe bachelor programme concurrently with completing courses on the master's programme.You still have to apply for enrollment to the master programme when you have almost completedthe bachelor programme, but your extra courses will be transferred automatically to your masterprogramme once you have passed the bachelor programme.
