Science for a better life
The 150th anniversary of Bayer AG is an occa-
sion to celebrate innovation and quality. What
started as a dyestuffs factory in the Barmen
district of Wuppertal is now a global corporation
with more than 110,000 employees. Although
that sounds like tradition and continuity, it is a
success story about change. The spirit of inven-
tiveness and the will to succeed form a bridge
spanning the company’s history from its origins
150 years ago to today.
In the beginning there was a friendship between
two men, plenty of a researcher’s natural curios-
ity and two kitchen stoves. On these, business-
man Friedrich Bayer and dyer Johann Friedrich
Weskott conducted experiments and eventually
discovered how to make the dye fuchsine. In
1863 they established the “Friedr. Bayer et.
comp” company.
Bayer products today help to improve the quality
of life for people and animals. One example is the
pain reliever Aspirin™, which came on the market
in 1899 and remains one of Bayer’s top products
to this day. When Bayer started selling Antinonnin,
the world’s first synthetic insecticide for control-
ling the nun moth, in 1892, it was the start of the
success story that is now Bayer CropScience. In
the area of high-performance materials, the poly-
urethanes for foams discovered in the 1930s and
the high-performance polycarbonate (Makrolon™)
patented in 1953 are the foundation for an ever-
expanding range of applications. These include
lightfast polyurethane coatings, made possible by
the Desmodur® N family of crosslinkers invented
by Dr. Kuno Wagner, and raw materials for the
production of anti-corrosion coatings for ships,
aircraft and automobiles.
Today, high-performance materials from Bayer
MaterialScience make an important contribution
to conserving fossil resources. It is thanks to the
invention of aliphatic polyurethane coatings that
assets can be preserved for longer than ever
before. Modern coating systems withstand both
wind and weather, impart durability and a glossy
finish. At the same time, Bayer MaterialScience’s
production technologies set standards in safety,
quality and cost efficiency. A continuous flow of
new innovations that benefit both society and
the environment provides for sustainable growth.
In this way, our products live up to our mission,
Bayer: Science for a better life.

CAS BUSINeSS UNIT
Leading in polyurethanes
The Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (CAS) Busi-
ness Unit is characterized by its broad range of
products and many years of experience in re-
search and development. On this foundation,
CAS takes a leading role in polyurethane raw
materials, such as isocyanates and polyols, in-
cluding modified systems such as polyurethane
dispersions, silane-terminated prepolymers and
blocked isocyanates.
Products manufactured from CAS raw materials
are used, for instance, to coat buses, trains and
ships. They have an extremely long shelf life and
offer good weathering and corrosion protection.
For this reason, they also are critical in the man-
ufacturing of wind turbines, pipelines and steel
structures.
Our raw materials also serve various purposes
in the timber processing industry. In paints and
coatings they protect against discoloration and
wear. Adhesive raw materials likewise are used in
this segment, although they further are involved
in the production of shoes and motor vehicles,
and in the building industry.
In the field of specialty chemicals, we produce
premium polyurethane dispersions, e.g. for cos-
metic formulations and hydrophilic prepolymers
for medical wound dressings or functional films.
Cast elastomers represent the latest addition to
the product range.
Apart from the conventional fields of applica-
tion, the CAS business unit continues to develop
its portfolio of products and system solutions
toward new, lucrative market segments. These
efforts are supported by the quality and versatil-
ity of aliphatic polyurethane systems. examples
include encapsulation materials for light-emitting
diodes and solar systems, or moldings for opti-
cal and transparent applications.
At the center of all our activities are our custom-
ers. Be it polyisocyanates, prepolymers, disper-
sion polyols or UV systems, they can profit from
our many years of experience and the wealth
of knowledge of our experts. At the same time,
close collaboration with our customers is essen-
tial to the development of innovative solutions
and new markets.
Most of our efforts in this connection are put into
eco-friendly coatings that go easier on resources
and are efficient in application. We therefore fo-
cus on low-solvent, solvent-free or waterborne
systems. To improve our adhesives product port-
folio, we also target ecologically compatible and
user-friendly systems.
This makes it possible for us not only to meet the
demands of existing markets, but also to devel-
op new markets offering promising opportunities.
Our success along the way is based on intense
research in our own laboratories and continuous
dialog with our customers.
6
The most important areas of application for our
waterborne coating raw materials include wood
and furniture coatings, metal and plastic coatings
for industrial applications, high-grade floor coat-
ings; automotive OeM, transportation vehicle and
refinishing coatings as well as textile coatings.
Moreover, we offer specialty products for glass
fiber sizes and applications of the paper and print-
ing ink industries.
Fast growing and very promising within waterborne
coatings technology, radiation curing polyurethane
dispersions combine the highest speed of cure
with excellent coating properties. Firmly estab-
lished in wood coatings and growing in plastics
coatings we are continuosly extending our range
for further applications.
Our waterborne adhesive raw materials are first
choice in heat-activated bonding applications.
From 3-D film lamination in the furniture industry
and heat lamination for car interior trim to the
bonding of footwear. For our waterborne con-
tact adhesives more and more applications arise
beyond the classical foam bonding market.
Check out our waterborne product lines: Bayhydrol
and Bayhytherm for coating applications, Dispercoll
for adhesives applications, Impranil for textile
applications and Baybond for Glass Fiber Sizes.
In combination with our polyisocyante crosslinkers
Desmodur and Bayhydur we offer superior system
solutions for 2K or 1K stoving applications.
Innovation is our tradition. With the breakthrough
discovery of the polyisocyanate-polyaddition pro-
cess in 1937 by Otto Bayer, Bayer became a
pioneer of polyurethane chemistry. 50 years ago,
Bayer AG developed the first applications using
polyisocyanates for the coatings and adhesives
sectors. Polyurethane systems – also known as
“DD coatings” – have established themselves in a
number of applications. We work closely with our
customers to systematically advance the state of
polyurethane technology. Using market-oriented
research and development, we specifically adapt
our product portfolio to the increasingly stringent
requirements of our customers. We want to contin-
ue our successful journey along this path with you.
As one of the leading producers of coating and
adhesive raw materials, we offer a comprehen-
sive range of high-grade raw materials for poly-
urethane coatings and adhesives. The demand
for ecological technology is continuously growing
and has greatly accelerated the shift in technology
away from solventborne coatings and adhesives
toward solvent-free and waterborne systems. With
our ecological technology platform we offer a
wide variety of aqueous dispersions for the coat-
ings and adhesives market. Our mission is to
provide competitive advantages for our custom-
ers: eco-friendly products with superior quality
and performance enabling highly efficient coating
and bonding processes. We are continuously
developing innovative dispersions to complement
the Bayer range of waterborne products based
on a variety of chemistries: polyurethane, poly-
acrylate and polyester dispersions. According to
requirements and cost/perfor-mance ratio we will
offer the most attractive formulation option, either
based on a 1K or 2K system.
Our technology platform – innovative and environment-friendly

Waterborne radiation curing resins. The most promising techno-
logy within the variety of environmentally friendly wood and plastic
coating systems are UV curing PU dispersions. Coatings based on
these exhibit the highest growth rates in wood coatings markets. The
key property of this type of coating is its similarity to conventional
PU coatings – similar targets can be reached by similar application
methods, at similar or faster drying times.
