Students are now being asked to think about and synthesize what they’ve read and come up with their own thoughts.
Common Core standards specify that students should be able to analyze the “technical, figurative, and connotative meanings” of words and phrases on their own.
Spending time alone with the texts, especially nonfiction ones, helps grow more confident readers who are better prepared to grapple with texts on their own on standardized tests

Research Stimulated Task (RST) and other responses as well as reading reflections to non-fiction and/or fictional text.

participation- 25% Quizzes/OEQs- 35% Tests/projects/essays- 30%
Nightly homework assigned as reinforcement
Half credit given for assignments handed in 1 day late
NO CREDIT given after that ABSENCES: students have the same
number of days to make up work that they were absent (i.e. 2 days absent, 2 days to make up the work)
