letter frOM interiM ManagerAs we approach the beginning of a new year, I thought you would be happy to see the results of the Society’s Strategic Response for fiscal year 2013.
The National MS Society is the best investment in driving solutions and changing the world for people with MS. Here are a few examples of how the National MS Society worked to change the world in 2013:
n In 2013, the Society committed over $48 million – an increase of over $5 million invested in 2012 - to fund 380 new and ongoing projects focusing on 3 priority areas:n Progressive MSn Nervous system repair, including myelin
repairn Wellness and lifestyle
n The Society has already committed to a record-breaking $50 million investment in these areas for 2014.
n In 2013, the Society recruited 25 new and engaged 130 scientific volunteer experts in total to ensure it makes the best possible research investments.
n The Society created and launched a new program in 2013 to fund training of physicians in MS specialty care at MS centers throughout the country.
n In 2013, MS activists have:n Advanced several critical agenda items by
meeting with over 250 federal legislators and sending nearly 26,000 emails
n Achieved a 30% increase for MS research through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program for a total of $5 million in 2013 and $25 million in 5 years
n Increased awareness on Capitol Hill on the importance of funding for progressive forms of MS
These are just a few of the many milestones marked in 2013. We need your continued support to keep our momentum!
Please make your year-end, tax-deductible gift now to help create a world free of multiple sclerosis. Your donation will help fund cutting-edge research, drive change through advocacy, facilitate professional education, and provide programs and services to help people with MS move their lives forward.

thankSgiVing Day raCe
This year, the Ohio Valley Chapter was a proud partner of the Thanksgiving Day Race in downtown Cincinnati. This is one of the oldest and largest 10K races in the country.
We helped provide volunteers to help keep race areas clean and to cheer on the runners. There was an amazing response from friends of the chapter. Over 90 of you took time out on Thanksgiving to volunteer. Not only did we help support a great race, we helped raise awareness of the fight against MS in front of over 15,000 runners. They learned about our own upcoming 5K, Run MS. But more importantly, they saw the passion of our volunteers for the Movement.
Thank you to all of those who volunteered!

fhlB grant SUCCeSSfeDeral hOMe lOan Bank hOMe MODifiCatiOn aCCeSSiBility grantThis past summer, the Ohio Valley Chapter was privileged to sponsor funding for our clients in need of home modifications to improve accessibility and address safety issues and overall quality of life to complete much needed emergency repairs. We were pleased to be a sponsoring agency of these funds helping our constituents living with MS to access much needed modifications and repairs.
In 2013, the Chapter sponsored 5 qualifying families, and below we feature and highlight some of the provided improvements and modifications.
If you would like to be considered for a Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) grant in the future, Please email Amanda Smith at [email protected] for details on qualifying, requirements, and restrictions. Funding amounts and numbers are limited.
Client One: Roof replacement: Our client’s home was in serious disrepair. The cost of living alone as well as managing a disease like MS on a restricted income can prove impossible to provide for unexpected home maintenance and even simple improvements. Upon a pre-
inspection, it was critical to replace the roof in order to keep the house safe from the elements and to ensure that any improvements that were made would not be compromised. The client requires constant use of a walker to maintain stability while walking. There was old deep piled carpeting in the home that actually prohibited safe use of the walker as it would get caught and cause serious risk for falls. The carpeting was addressed for safety. Also, special grab bars were installed in the bathroom to enable a safe and stable entry and exit while bathing.
Client Two: Living in a two story home, with his wife and caregiver who also experiences health concerns, client two needed several issues addressed to improve safety and comfort in the home and to be able to access the second floor. First, entry and exit from main doors was addressed with threshhold ramps which reduced the ridge for smoother and easier wheelchair access as well as reducing the likelihood of tripping. All hallways had handrailing installed for stabilization, and a stairlift was included to allow the client to access the second floor. Additionally, safe bathing and toileting had been an issue in their bathrooms. A new raised toilet, three specialty grab bars and a towel bar were also installed.
Client Three: Client three must use a wheelchair, and problems progressed quickly within the past year. Simply entering and exiting the home was a serious issue and incredibly difficult to maneuver even with the assistance of their caregiver. These issues
05natiOnalMSSOCiety.Org | 1-800-344-4867
were addressed with items such as a new screen door, expandable door hinges, new handles/hardware, an automatic opener, and remote door locks. A vertical grab bar, as well as a 4 foot and 9 foot ramp for safe wheelchair use were also installed. The client was able to access their back deck and enjoy a cup of coffee to watch the sunrise this past fall.
Client Four: Client four is focused on maintaining their independence and to keeping their home within their community. The second floor was inaccessible and there were additional safety concerns with entry and exit within the home. New door locks, hinges, and the relocation of a light switch and doorbell improved safety in the home. Accessibility to the second floor was addressed with a stairlift and hallway railing. The bathroom door was widened and grab bars installed to improve safety and functionality for the bathroom facilities.
Client Five: Client five must use a wheelchair. Their spouse is not only the full time caregiver, but also works as well. The client takes pride in their cooking activities, but much of the kitchen was inaccessible due to safety risks of burns, falls, or other accidents. Safety was also a concern within the bathroom, psoing risks while bathing. The kitchen was addressed with a disguised GFCI outlet within easy reach of the client, a touch faucet fixture, accessible pantry drawers and shelving to keep food items within reach, and a custom cutting board to make food preparation safer. A new stove with accessible controls reduced risk of burns. The bathroom floor and cabinet
were modified and repaired for safe self care. Remote door locks were installed for client safety when they are home alone.
We hope you enjoy reading these success stories as much as the Ohio Valley Chapter enjoys facilitating them through this special grant funding.

ADVERTISEMENTMEDICATION GUIDEGILENYA™ (je-LEN-yah) (fingolimod) capsules Read this Medication Guide before you start using GILENYA andeach time you get a refill. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking with your doctorabout your medical condition or your treatment. What is the most important information I should know aboutGILENYA?GILENYA may cause serious side effects, including: 1. Slow heart rate (bradycardia or bradyarrhythmia) when you
start taking GILENYA. GILENYA can cause your heart rate toslow down, especially after you take your first dose. You willhave a test to check the electrical activity of your heart (ECG)before you take your first dose of GILENYA.
You should stay in a medical facility for at least 6 hours afteryou take your first dose of GILENYA.
After you take your first dose of GILENYA: • Your pulse and blood pressure should be checked every hour. • You should be watched by a healthcare professional to see if
you have any serious side effects. If your heart rate slowsdown too much, you may have symptoms such as:
• dizziness • tiredness • feeling like your heart is beating slowly or skipping beats • If you have any of the symptoms of slow heart rate, they will
usually happen during the first 6 hours after your first doseof GILENYA. Symptoms can happen up to 24 hours after youtake your first GILENYA dose.
• 6 hours after you take your first dose of GILENYA you willhave another ECG. If your ECG shows any heart problems orif your heart rate is still too low or continues to decrease, youwill continue to be watched.
• If you have any serious side effects after your first dose ofGILENYA, especially those that require treatment with othermedicines, you will stay in the medical facility to be watchedovernight. Making health inSUranCe ChOiCeS Starting Oct. 1, most people who didn’t already have health insurance had new options for coverage when the Health Insurance Marketplace—a component of the Affordable Care Act—began enrollment for coverage to begin Jan. 1, 2014.
The Web-based Health Insurance Marketplaces, (sometimes called “exchanges”) are a new way of shopping for health insurance coverage, allowing people to compare plans, get tax credits and other cost help. The program also includes government-certified “navigators,” who are expert health insurance counselors funded by the marketplaces to provide unbiased information, education and enrollment help to consumers at no cost. Coverage through marketplace plans is guaranteed regardless of pre-existing conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, and covers preventive and needed care, such as doctor’s visits, hospitalizations, maternity leave, emergency room care and prescriptions.
All plans that participate in the marketplace have to show costs and what is covered in simple, understandable language that allows people to make “apples to apples” comparisons be tween p lans . giVe at the OffiCe Every year, people nationwide help create a world free of multiple sclerosis by contributing through their employer’s charitable giving campaign.
Most campaigns kick off in the fall, so if you’ve been looking for an easy and efficient way to join the movement, act now. Simply designate your annual pledge to the National MS Society. Your donation will be automatically deducted from each paycheck to fund cutting-edge research and provide programs and services to help people affected by MS move their lives forward.
Federal government employees and military personnel are eligible to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the nation’s largest workplace giving program. If you participate in the CFC, designate your gift to the Society using CFC#67300.
If your company offers a workplace giving program, look for the Society listed under Community Health Charities. If your employer doesn’t offer a giving program, talk to your benefits administrator or call us at 1-800-344-4867, option #2, to see if we can help.
