We understand how frightening a diagnosis of MS can be for an individual and a family. That’s why we are committed to providing specialized support and resources to our MS community and ending this disease once and for all. Our highest priorities are finding solutions for people living with MS and funding programs and vital research that change lives.

Last year marked the culmination of the five-year, nationwide NOW (No Opportunity Wasted) campaign designed to raise $250 million for research by the end of 2015. Your gifts ensured our Chapter raised nearly $3 million of that total. For perspective, since the Society’s inception, $900 million in research funding has been raised and $250 million of that came about in the past five years alone through the NOW campaign. We know the future is filled with breakthrough discoveries in treatments, rehabilitation, and prevention moving us closer to ending MS forever. Thank you for being a part of it.

Follow the exciting work being funded by you right here in our Chapter like myelin repair, improved MRI imaging, and pediatric MS research. And, while we wait for that next big breakthrough, we are proud to help drive change through advocacy, facilitate professional education, and provide programs and services throughout Utah and Southern Idaho so people with MS can live their best lives. Together, we will stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost, and end MS forever.

ABOUT THENATIONAL MS SOCIETYThe world’s first documented case of multiple sclerosis (MS) was recorded in 1421. It would be another 457 years before a doctor in the U.S. recognized MS as a specific disease and not until 1946 that the National MS Society was founded with a focus on driving research to create a world free of MS. A short eight years later, on December 6, 1954, the Utah State Chapter was born and became the Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter on October 11, 2011.

OUR MISSIONWe mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure, and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

WHAT IS MS?Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable and often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Common symptoms often include vision issues, mobility difficulties, numbness, tingling, dizziness and vertigo. No two people have exactly the same symptoms and, over time, symptoms can change or fluctuate. More than 2.3 million people live with MS worldwide, and the majority are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with women diagnosed two to three times more often than men. Although the progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, advances in research and treatment options are moving us closer to a world free of MS.

EXPENSES

ADVANCES INMS RESEARCH

Nationally, the Society contributed more than $53 million to 380 new and ongoing projects in 2015. Our Chapter contributed more than $692,000 of that total.

McCarthey and Harmon families committed to funding fellowships supporting young researchers entering the field of MS research.

The Chapter increased coverage for physical therapy and successfully lobbied for fewer restrictions on insurance formularies.

Five new treatments for relapsing-remitting MS have been approved.

Three promising myelin repair treatments are in trial.

The first large trial for primary-progressive MS treatment saw some positive results.

Studies were refined targeting MS on just 200 genetic variations (out of billions)

More than 110,000 MS Activists across the country secured $22.4 million in government research funding.

Frank Roskelley has been a part of Bike MS from the very beginning; 2015 was his 29th year participating in the ride. His annual fundraising efforts average between $3,000 and $4,000, which means that over the past 29 years, Frank has raised around $100,000 for the National MS Society.

Frank began supporting Bike MS at the age of 55 for the challenge of riding 150 miles. Along the way, he has met countless supporters of the cause and people with MS who have inspired him to continue year after year. He raises funds by going door-to-door, writing letters, and keeping donors involved in his progress. He keeps track of them, visits them, and engages them in the cause.

Through the years, Frank’s story has garnered a lot of buzz. In fact, both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Herald Journal included articles a few years ago written about Frank’s commitment and passion for cycling at Bike MS. Frank’s ultimate goal is to celebrate his 30th anniversary of riding in Bike MS in 2016 at the age of 85.

Frank’s commitment to Bike MS and passion in raising funds for the National MS Society has been passed along to his children and grandchildren. In fact, one of Frank’s granddaughters, Juli Cauley, has volunteered at the event since she was a child and served as the event’s volunteer coordinator in 2015. Juli’s can-do attitude and endless determination to make Bike MS a wonderful experience for all involved are great tributes to her grandfather’s long-time involvement with the event. Juli is continuing her grandfather’s legacy of service and keeping it in the family.
