PROGRAM OVERVIEW
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This three day course is designed to increase knowledge about Parkinson’s disease and build
capacity for comprehensive inter professional care in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
The course is intended for neurologists, physician’s assistants, nurses, physical therapists,
occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, social workers and psychologists, the
majority of whom already have some experience with the management of Parkinson’s disease
and are interested in further education and collaboration. An interdisciplinary faculty of senior
movement disorder specialists will teach the course.
Day one: will include a Parkinson’s disease update, neuropsychiatric symptoms and
management; parkinsonian syndromes and discipline-specific assessment and treatment breakout
lectures. Discipline specific breakout groups include: physical therapy, speech-language therapy,
neuropsychology occupational therapy & nursing.
Day two: will build on interdisciplinary team development and then break into discipline
specific breakout groups for practice specific tools and guidelines for each profession.
Day three: will explore multidisciplinary assessment and treatment case discussions: video
based in rehabilitation therapies for patients in early, mid-advance and late stage of Parkinson’s
disease. The course concludes with a session entitled “linking back to the workplace”, wherein
teams and individual participants make very specific plans for implementation of that which they
have learned.
COURSE LANGUAGE This course will be presented in Portuguese with the option for simultaneous English translation.
Please be prepared to provide your ID to the receptionist in exchange for your translation audio
set during the course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to accomplish the following:
1. Design, review and modify a patient/family specific treatment plan
2. Participate effectively as an interdisciplinary or inter professional team member
3. Identify challenges associated with Parkinson’s disease and side effects of the
medication
4. Support a person with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners in self-management
5. List key characteristics of early, middle and late stage Parkinson’s disease
6. Describe the unique and complementary role of each discipline in your care team
7. Identify strategies for building inter professional networks and community
partnerships

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE Advance registered participants will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
Certificates may be retrieved at the registration desk at the end of the course.
Participants who register onsite will receive their certificate of attendance one week after the
course, via e-mail in a pdf file.
RECORDINGS PROHIBITED Audio and videotaping are not allowed during the course. Photography is also not allowed
during the activity.

or on the MDS website. If you do not want your photo used, please inform the staff photographer
