Assignment: SUR REAL ism Task: Create an original piece of surreal art. NUMBER ONE RULE: No electronic devices may be used.

You have two options: (1) Draw or paint your surreal collage.OR

(2) Draw or paint an entirely new piece of surreal art.

Criteria: Follow the “Surrealism Characteristics” and “Surreal Techniques”.

For option #1 - Use coloured pencils, paint, or pastels to recreate your collage.

For option #2 – Sketch your ideas before beginning your polished piece.Your image must have depth (foreground and background). You may use a single medium or a combination (e.g. paint and collage).Must be in colour.Include one or more of the surreal techniques.

Surrealism Characteristics

Surrealism has many forms but for this assignment, all objects must come from reality. However, your creativity makes it dreamlike or beyond reality. That means you can put a trumpet on an elephant’s head but may not include dragons or monsters. You are warping the real world!

Include objects in unusual locations/situations. For example, a monkey in a tree is NOT unusual but a monkey in a kitchen is surreal.

Include objects in unusual combinations. For example: hats + guitars + foxes. Feel free to stretch or melt objects, just like Dali did with his “melting clocks” in “The

Persistence of Memory”. In surrealism, gravity does not always exist. Surrealist images typically suggest three dimensions: They express depth

(foreground, mid-ground, background) and shadows.

Grading: You accurately express surrealism characteristics and techniques; though scenes are unusual you show evidence of planning (can’t be totally random); care and neatness of design; creativity.

Salvador Dali: “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory”. (1952-54)

Surreal Techniques

Frottage - Frottage is a surrealist and ‘automatic’ method of creative production that involves creating a rubbing of a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material.

Frottage Example

Decalcomania - Decalcomania is a blotting process whereby paint is squeezed between two surfaces to create a mirror image.

Cubomania - Cubomania is a form of collage, in which one or more pictures is cut into squares, with the squares then reassembled in a sort of fugue state to create a new image.

Outagraphy – The subject is cut out of an image creating a silhouette effect.

Soufflage – Paint is blown across paper to create an image.

Exquisite Corpse – A three-fold combination of creatures.

Collage - Arrange discordant objects into a dreamlike scene.
