Firefighter A firefighter’s job is to help protect people in the community. A firefighter puts out fires in houses by using large hoses that connect to fire hydrants. Some firefighters sleep at the firehouse so if there is a fire call in the middle of the night, they are ready to go. Firefighters ride in big red fire trucks to get to the fire quickly. On the fire truck there are sirens, a ladder, hoses, and other equipment they may need. Firefighters have to wear special gear that is fireproof to help protect their skin from burns. They have oxygen masks on their face so they can breathe. When a firefighter is inside a burning building, they have to move quickly and get any people still inside the building, out. The firefighters outside of the burning building need to spray the building with the hoses.
