Save the date! the P4 News Mrs. Carwithen Halloween It is a Lakeridge tradition to celebrate Halloween with a parade and party. We will be holding our celebration on Friday 10/31 at 9:30. Parents who signed up to help will be contacted via email, but if you want to join our planning team, please let me know. This party is always tons of fun! Reading We’ve been focusing on the reading strategies of summarizing, close reading, and identifying key details in a non-fiction text. Our class loves to read aloud and for that I am proud! I have been testing the students to hear their reading fluency and to see who needs some additional support. Our first book report of the year is the realistic fiction report. Your child should have already chosen a realistic fiction book and should begin reading soon. All of this work should be done at home. The report information was sent home on Sept 30 and we will continue to go over what the expectations for the speech will be. Tracy Richardson taught our class how to work with different lines to create a fun picture. Check out our pictures in the upper hallway. We will be creating spooky haunted house pictures later this month to help decorate for Halloween.

Math We will finish our first unit in math this week with an assessment on Friday. We have been working on addition and subtraction of large numbers, rounding and story problems.

Our next math unit is on multiplication. This is why knowing our math facts is very important. Many students are not yet fluent in their facts and they need to be practiced at home. They will be using place value to multiply by tens and hundreds, estimate products and multiply two-digit by two-digit problems. The fourth grade has a flexible math class that students qualify for on a unit-by-unit basis. This class covers the same curriculum material we do, but they do it more quickly and with more homework. Since this reduces the size of my math class, I am able to spend time with each student re-teaching or extending them as needed.

In Writer’s Workshop the students have been learning how to write a realistic fiction story in the narrative genre. From gathering seed ideas to developing characters and scenes, students are really enjoying exploring this type of writing. This week, we will be completing our first drafts and learning how to revise and edit. Ask your child about their story!

We just wrapped up our Washington geography unit. Students learned about the major landforms in the state and where they are located. They created several kinds of maps of the state and learned about the similarities and differences found on both sides of the state. In the next few weeks they will learn about experimenting with plants. We will explore the scientific process and how to use it with our own experiments.
