“ Recently, there was a standoff between providers and insurance companies. Patients , who are the

actual user of the service & ultimately fund > 80 % of the healthcare in India, were no where in the

discussion ! It is a call to action for patient communities in India to get organized and assert

their voice with all the stake holder in the continuum of care”

“ Currently, the healthcare system revolves around doctors , hospitals , surgery and pills, and the focus point is balance sheet or the number of patients . Until this shifts to the ‘patient’ and

‘outcome driven treatment’, the pain to patients and the cost to payers is never going to reduce ”

“ The reason why industry is heard and the patients are lost in the entire continuum of care is because the industry is organized and patients are not . It’s time for patients to

get organized , share experiences , knowledge and together assert their voice to make a difference to the

healthcare system. We need a Patient Care Collaborative immediately.”

“ The single biggest challenge before the global healthcare systems which needs immediate attention is the cost and outcome of not being able to manage chronic diseases ,

and the ultimate way to go is ‘Self care’ . The patient groups will play the most important role in ensuring

compliance and treatments that lead to better outcomes & reduce the dependence on clinical resources ”

Patient Care Collaborative – Road map

► Form the Group & various chapters @ town level , communities etc.

► Start the advocacy efforts with the government . Convince the government for including patient groups in policy formulation

► Make recommendations & representations to accreditation bodies for enhancing their outreach efforts to the users of healthcare

► Start a dialogue with various medical associations for safe guarding the patients interests

► Encourage routine chapter meetings with patient peer groups for better care , treatment outcomes & reduce wastage ( or over dependence ) of clinical resources

“ Currently , the healthcare providers are ‘Eminence based’ and not ‘Evidence based’. Patients must get to rate the

facilities and not just get carried away by the accreditation certifications that are purely used as a

marketing tools by providers . It is only then that we will lay a foundation for a stronger evidence and an outcome

driven healthcare ” - Rajendra Pratap Gupta
