The frst would be during the Crimean war when Florence Nightingale and her

ellow nursing ladies cared or wounded soldiers. Florence realized the

importance o sanitary conditions or reducing spread o disease, which in itsel

was a dramatic idea. What I fnd most interesting though, was that she

documented her results and presented improement in patient outcomes usingstatistical analysis. This was one o the frst ormal e!amples o eidence"based

practice in nursing.

The second period would be in the early #$%%s through the #$&%s when states

began passing nurse licensure acts '(genes, )%%$*. This was a +ey step in

establishing nursing as a proession with standards and regulations, something I

beliee is ery important today.

I wanted to share one interesting reported act that I came across while

researching this topic. pparently during the #-%s in New /or+ prostitutes who

were prosecuted in court got to choose between two sentences0 going to prison

or going into hospital serice '(genes, )%%$*. This certainly spea+s to the less

than ideal conditions o hospitals bac+ then, and to the lac+ o ormal training or

most o the 1nurses2 proiding care.

The other thing that I ound ery interesting was that the eolution o nursing has

been ery closely tied with times o war.
