Possible areas of research collaboration

• Oral cancer: prevention early detection and early diagnosis, economic analysis (1, 2, 7,8)

• Epidemiological studies on oral health surveillance and related health inequities, and also research on psychosocial determinants of oral health and quality of life (3, 4,5, 6, 8)

• Reduction of severity of side effects head and neck cancer treatment and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients (1,2,5)

• Simplified and less invasive prosthodontics/implant treatment: focusing in elderly, quality of life impacts, economic analysis (3, 2, 8)

• Promotion of comfort in dental treatment : pain control, sedation (1,5)

• Development of an interoperable Electronic Health Record in the context of oral health - eSaudeBucal (7,8, 10)

Project 1 - Oral cancer: NUHS (SUS) perspective Reasons to prioritize research investments

• NO National policy for prevention and early detection of oral cancer

• Fifth most prevalent cancer in men; the sixth in women in Brazil (INCA, 2016)

• Large number of advanced stage cases reaching treatment (more than 80%))

• The adoption of any health technology = there must be evidence of cost-effectiveness (National Policy on Health Technology Management in Brazil, Administrative Rule No. 2,690, dated 11/11/2009)

• No scientific evidence of effectiveness of any oral cancer screening program

• Pilot implementation of a Screening and Matricial Program to Goiás State leading by UFG researchers and public health system

• It was a demand from population through Public Ministry at Goias State and a cooperation of UFG (CGDB-FO), State Dept of Health, ACCG

• Permanent and continuous educational program for primary care professionals of public health system,

• Population empowerment

• Monitoring Periodic and continuous process of the risk population for oral cancer

• Infrastructure and human resources already exists at SUS

Right moment to conduct a cost-effectiveness study:

costs and outcomes of the current scenario

(with no specific strategy) X

scenario of the Program in the pilot implementation.
