Behind The Scenes: Scotty McCreery

Spotlight On: Vince Gill Grammy Award winning artist Vince Gill performed for the MRAC in 2010 and again in 2013 along with The Time Jumpers. In November, Gill was presented with the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence during the 48th Annual CMA Awards. The award is presented to an individual whose ideas and

actions have “dramatically broadened and improved country music’s influence on a national or international level for the benefit of the industry as a whole.”

The award is generally reserved for music industry executives. Gill is only the second artist to receive the prestigious award.

booking shows for a small venue like ours. As many of you are probably aware, McCreery is a student at NC State in Raleigh. With this in

mind, we had the idea to see whether he would be willing to make the short trip to Emporia for a show. Program Director, Steve Bloom had our agent

pitch the idea to McCreery’s camp and we quickly found out that the logistics were not as easy as we had hoped. For instance, McCreery’s band is located in Nashville and it was not feasible to send the band and equipment for only our show. His agent indicated that they would try to work something out. Steve received a call back from McCreery’s agent about six weeks later with great news. They were able to book dates around us in Charlottesville on Friday night and at the Ferguson Center in Newport News on Sunday night, which made our show possible.

Scotty McCreery delivered a stellar performance complete with showmanship, a stunning light show and even beach balls to a sold out crowd to kick off our 2015 series. His opening act, Smithfield earned many new fans in Emporia and appear to be gaining momentum in the world of country music. The duo recently opened for past MRAC entertainer Eric Paslay in Nashville.

Emporia was just one of three stops in Virginia for McCreery last weekend. Routing is extremely important in the entertainment industry and can be a difference maker in

These are the artists and this is the music that defined a generation. In a magical night to remember, you will enjoy a lineup of fabulous rock n' roll legends. The show features Brian Hyland, The Chiffons, Diamond David Somerville, Johnny Tillotson and Shirley Alston Reeves.

“I went on Good Morning Lake Country and told our listeners how wonderful the Meherrin River Arts Council had done, how nice the theater was and about the hospitality that was shown...thank you for the great night…and thank you to the Meherrin Rivers Arts Council, you should be proud.”

Our Next Show:

The Scotty McCreery performance took the on stage lighting to a fundamentally different level from anything we have ever done. They used LED Video Walls to display the onstage videos. Now the videos become the focus instead of just traditional lighting on the band. A video designer develops computerized programs that provides imagery for each song. This is the latest technology used by major performers. Our technical director estimates the purchase cost of the system used by McCreery to be around $200,000 or more.
