When#I#went#(into#poliQcs),# I#had# to# be# comfortable# with#my# own# self,# that# I# can# live#with#failure...#So#I#led#a#preby#disciplined# life;# if# the# worst#came# to# the# worst,# I# could#survive...# I# can# live# on# soya#beans.#I#can#live#quite#frugally#if#I#need#to.#%

For# me,# it# is# a#moment# of# anguish#because# all#my# life#you# see,# the# whole#of# my# adult# life# I#have# believed# in#merger#and#the#unity#o f # t h e s e # t w o#territories.#

Immediately# afer# achieving# independence,# Mr# Lee#and#his#team#tackled#challenges#and#issues#concerning#Singapores#survival.#

BUILDING#A#NATION#


One# a rm# of# my#strategy#was# to#make#Singapore# into# an#oasis# in# Southeast#Asia,# for# if# we# had#First#World#standards,#then#businessmen#and#tourists# would# make#us# a# base# for# their#business# and# tours# of#the#region.#

TRANSFORMING#SINGAPORE#


We# had# a# deep# sense# of#mission#to#establish#a#clean#and#eecQve# # government# The#people#expected#this#of#us,#and#we#were#determined#to#live#up#to#their#expectaQons.#


##A#CLEAN#GOVERNMENT#

It# will# not# do# to# depend# on# others# to# defend# us.#We#would#be# in# a# very#dicult# situaQon# if# there# is# trouble#one# day# and# those# defending# us# belong# to# another#state,# people# not# loyal# to# our# naQon,# but# only# soldiers#employed#by#us.#

DEFENDING#OURSELVES#


CREATING#HOMES#FOR#THE#PEOPLE#My#primary#occupaQon#was#to#give#every#ciQzen#a#stake# in# the# country# and# its# future.# # I# wanted# a#homejowning#society.#


A#CLEAN#AND#GREEN#SINGAPORE#FOR#ALL#SINGAPOREANS#

Mr#Lee#had#a#vision#of#Singapore#as#a#clean#and#green#island#which#can#be#enjoyed#by#all#Singaporeans.###


Finally,# the# end# product# [of# educaQon]# is# the# good#ciQzen,#the#man#or#woman#who#has#had#the#maximum#of#nurturing#of#his#or#her#natural#talent#to#t#him#or#her#to#earn#his#or#her#livelihood#in#our#society#and#who#can#bring#up#a#family#and#care#for#them.#

EDUCATION#FOR#EVERYONE#


###############BUILDING#FRIENDSHIPS#Mr# Lee# recognized# that# Singapore# was# a# country#among# big# powers# on# the# internaQonal# scene.##Singapore#had#to#maximise#our#internaQonal#space#for#us#to#act#in#our#naQonal#interests,#by#creaQng#Qes#with#many#countries.##


I#had#been#prime#minister#for# 31# yearsIf,# in# the#years#I#have#lef,#I#was#able#to#help#my#successor#get#a#g r ip# on# h i s# j ob# and#succeed,#that#would#be#my#na l# con t r i buQon# to#Singapore.#

STEPPING#DOWN#


The# future# is# full# of# promise# as# it# is# fraught# with#uncertainty...#We#stand#a#beber#chance#of#not#failing#if#we# abide# by# the# basic# principles# that# have# helped# us#progress:# social# cohesion# through# sharing# the# benets#of#progress,#equal#opportuniQes#for#all#and#meritocracy,#with# the#best#man#or#woman#for# the# job,#especially#as#leaders#in#government.#

A#PROMISING#FUTURE#


ON#HIMSELF#I#would#say#that#Im#very#determined#when#I#set#out#to# do# something# If# I# decide# something# is# worth#doing,#then#Ill#put#my#heart#and#soul#into#it.##
