Kia ora Central School whānau. A wonderful week was had by us all with the skill, wit and creativity of Stu Duval engaging all our Central kids and staff. He was amazing, even when he’s sick, and the buzz around his art, his writing and his overall impact has been just great. It is fantastic to walk around the school and just see the kids writing in their notepads, drawing cartoon caricatures and sharing their creations with their friends and teachers. I reckon Stu may well have inspired a handful of future authors, and if not, he has certainly entertained and engaged a school full of eager learners.  Hey, a heads up about this coming Friday. Firstly, Ranginui have an interschool sports exchange against Oakura, in Oakura. GO CENTRAL! Secondly, our school choir are performing at ‘Kids Sing’ at Spotswood College 6:00pm. Door sales $10 entry for this event. Please support where you can, parents. Central School kids out there doing it!  Ngā mihi - Mr. J --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCHOOL HANGI for Puanga 27-28 June Thank you to all those families who have offered to help out with the hangi. We have the names of some keen helpers for the hangi crew. We hope this will be a wonderful event that everyone enjoys. There is no charge for this, instead each family is asked to donate food that can be put into the hangi. Suggestions are chicken, pork, beef, lamb, potatoes, kumara, pumpkin, cabbage and carrots. Whatever is donated is what we will be eating. Vegetables can be brought in from Monday 17 June, and meat can be brought in the week beginning 24th June unless you have arranged something with the classroom teacher. The children prepare the vegetables the day before the hangi (Thursday 27 June). They will be asked to bring a potato peeler to school on the Thursday. On Friday 28 June the fire will be lit early in the morning. The food is put into the hole about 7.30 – 8am. The hangi will be cooked in time for lunch. As you can see, it is a long process so giving an exact time for eating can be difficult. We plan to be eating between 12 – 12.30 pm. Please email Charlaine ([email protected]) if you have any questions, offers of help or donations. Thank you for your support.

….School Visit to Parihaka….

Next term the whole school will be visiting Parihaka. We will split the school over three days. Tues 30, Wed 31 July and Thurs 1 August. Year 6 children will stay overnight on Tuesday 30 July. Year 5 children will stay overnight on Wednesday 31 July. More details on the cost and which day the remaining classes will visit Parihaka will be included in the next newsletter.

Central School Singers and 1st 15 @ St Andrew’s Church

Our Central Singers and Central 1st 15 sang beautifully at the 60th Jubilee celebration of City Sounds Choir at St Andrew’s Church on Sunday afternoon. Our immensely talented Sue Lupton led our two choirs and the City Sounds choir. Special mention also to Rebecca Carberry who accompanied beautifully on the piano. Our two choirs are back in action at the Big SIng on Friday night from 6.00pm at Spotswood College.

___Stu Duval - Story Teller___ Kia ora! The children have been lucky enough to spend some time this week with published author and cartoonist Stu Duval. He has regaled the children with a live

retelling of his latest book 'The Legend of Captain Black Custard' as well as taught them quite a few cartoon-drawing tricks! You may have had children

coming home begging to buy one or two of his books (yay)! Here is a link to his Products Page so you can have a look around. https://studuval.co.nz/products

International Children We now have a keen group of international children who meet every Thursday from

1.30-2.15 in Te Whare Mātau. The children came up with the name themselves. The idea of

the group is all about celebrating our school’s diversity. So far the children have shared

about their own country and connected with other children who are from the same country

as them. We are planning art and culture activities to do as a group. If you are keen to help

out with the group, please contact Charlaine ([email protected]) or Juliet

( [email protected] ). Here are some photos from last week:

Science Fair The Energy Skills Science Fair has been announced & Mr Hills had his first meeting with Yr 4-6 children who may be interested in entering last week. He will meet again later this week to confirm the names / teams of children who are serious about entering. They will receive a copy of the information poster at this time. Entries are due at the Devon Hotel by Thursday 19 September, however it is vital the children begin researching as soon as possible. There are two categories to choose from this year, information relating to each can be found on the link below. May I point out that this competition is a huge commitment & can involve families having to arrange ‘science-planning-sessions’. I offer some lunchtime workshops at school however these are limited. https://www.energyskills.co.nz/uploads/files/04528%20-%20Science%20Fair%20Poster%202019%20email%20V2%2028-5-19.pdf Or search the Energy Skills Association - Science Fair website & click on the link to the 2019 poster.

Rocket Work in Ranginui

Rms 9, 10, 11 & 12 are participating in the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge, an initiative from Engineering NZ designed to excite children about STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths). Each class has been assigned an Ambassador (a volunteer professional who supports their understanding of science principles) and they have been challenged to design, build & launch their own water rocket. Along the way they have been learning about Newton’s Laws of Motion, team work, health & safety & creative thinking. This 8 week programme will take the rest of this term but we hope to be able to share more about our successes & failures soon. If you wish to read more visit: https://wonderproject.nz

CHICKENPOX We have had a confirmed case of chickenpox. We ask all parents to to be aware and look for any signs of your child feeling unwell. Symptoms are fever, headache ,runny nose, cough and feeling tired a rash will follow 1-2 days later. We ask that you do not send your child to school if they are unwell. It is not only unfair on classmates, their families and teachers if the children return to school too early but also on the child trying to cope with learning. The following Ministry of Health information is important to follow please, Chickenpox exclusion from school for one week from date of appearance of rash. Look for fever and spots with a blister on top of each spot.

MEDICATIONS If your child requires a ventolin inhaler, please make sure the school has one and it will kept at school (in the sick bay ) so that it can be administered when needed.

SCHOOL DONATIONS A huge thank you to all those families who have supported us by paying the voluntary school donation. Every little bit is important for the overall operation of the school, especially in the age of under funding of schools, therefore we humbly ask that those who have not yet paid their school donations, please do so. It is tax deductible and you will be receipted to enable this.
