Mr. Fitton PARAGRAPH ASSSIGNMENT Name:_________________Social Studies 10 Date:__________________
The Social Studies 10 Curriculum demands that students learn to write an analytical paragraph. For this assignment you are asked to write a 250-300 word paragraph on one of the topics below.
1. Describe factors that contributed to Canadian immigration throughout the period from 1812 to the 1850s. 2. Describe the factors that contributed to the rebellions of 1837.3. Describe the factors that contributed to Canadian Confederation.
1. START: Brainstorm/Research with peers and fill out the chart provided to find evidence in the text to support your viewpoint.
2. Decide on a thesis (the position you will take)
3. Use the information in the chart to write a paragraph that proves your thesis. You must consider social, political and economic factors contributing to Immigration or the Rebellions.
4. After you make a point, discuss/Explain how it proves your thesis. (For instance: Your thesis is Mr. Fitton is mean. Your evidence is: he meows loudly. You
must not have the evidence stand on its own. You must discuss how it proves that Mr. Fitton is mean. EXAMPLE: Mr. Fitton’s mean nature is revealed through his inappropriate actions. For instance, he meows loudly in the presence of hungry, caged Pitbulls in a malicious attempt to tease them for his own amusement.)
5. When you have proven your thesis through providing details and evidence, make a concluding statement. A conclusion (1) re-states your thesis, (2) briefly summarizes the points used to prove your thesis and then (3) makes an insightful comment. End with a bang!
Criteria:* Your response must include reference to Social, Political and Economic causes.* You must include two direct quotations from the textbook, and cite them.* Quotations must be smoothly integrated into your own sentence. * Have a clear thesis statement and clear topic sentences (when you discuss each new point)* Blueprint in your introduction the items you will discuss.* Use transition words between topics.
Example: Throughout the period from 1812 to the 1850s Canada experienced a
tremendous growth population. Indeed, several social, political and
economic factors drove Canada’s expansion. Among the most influential
elements that drew immigrants to Canada, were poor living conditions in
Europe, free land and the promise of a better life.
