The primary anthology used in the Junior English course is Literature and Language Arts.Students will be issued a book for home use. These books are to remain at home as we have a set for the classroom.Some of the units of study are plot and setting, using primary and secondary sources, narrator and voice, differentliterary themes, irony and ambiguity, symbolism and allegory, poetry, biography, drama, motivation, and characterization.

Literature - American Literature from the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries.

Class information

Make-up - Students who are absent (sick, pre-arranged absences - not suspensions) are expected to make-up their missedassignments and tests within 2 school days of the student’s return. Students are encouraged to communicate with the teacherthrough email. Class time will not be used to complete make-up work or answer questions concerning make-up assignments.Students should see the teacher before/after class or school for assistance.

Suspension - Maintaining attendance through proper behavior is essential for educational growth and success. Students whoare suspended from school (home suspension) will not receive credit for assignments, projects, or class work that is due duringthe period of suspension. If a student is suspended in the school’s in-school suspension program, the student may receivemake-up credit. However, the student must contact the teacher prior to the suspension to receive make-up credit and the day’sassignments. It is still the student’s responsibility to keep up with the missing work, lectures, and information that is presentedduring the student’s suspension.

Cheating - Students’work must be original, and those who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment and will not be allowedmake-up credit. The teacher will also make parental contact. Cheating will result in a class suspension and a disciplinaryreferral. Unless otherwise stated by the teacher, students should assume all of their work is to be done individually. Theschool’s Honor Code Policy will be strictly enforced at all times. If you have questions, refer to the RHS student handbook.

Tardy Policy - The school’s tardy policy will be strictly enforced. Beginning on Monday, August 17, 2015 all students must bein their assigned seats and ready to learn when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in a tardy. For additional informationabout RHS’s tardy policy, refer to the student handbook. (Remember, you have a limited amount of time between classes.)

Behavioral Issues - Students must follow the teacher’s directions at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in a loss ofcredit and/or class suspension. If this happens, make-up credit will not be issued. Aloss of credit during a major exam canadversely affect a student’s quarter or semester grade and even graduation eligibility.

Deadlines - There will be numerous assignments and several projects assigned each quarter. Areasonable deadline will begiven for completion of a student’s work and must be met to receive full credit. In certain cases, the teacher reserves the rightto extend a deadline - on an individual basis. As a rule, the teacher does not accept late assignments.

Cell Phones/Tablets – With the teacher’s permission, cell phones and tablets may be used for educational activities in theclassroom. However, they must never be used in a disruptive manner – i.e. texting during class. Failure to follow the teacher’sinstructions will result in a detention and/or a disciplinary referral.

Computers / Internet - Computers and the Internet shall be used for research and educational purposes. Students may notplay games or interact in any activity that is not directly related to the given assignment. Failure to comply with this rule willresult in loss of computer time and credit for that assignment. If there are continuing problems, the student will be suspendedfrom class and given a disciplinary referral. The RUSD/DPJPAtechnology agreement will be strictly enforced.

Grade Scale - Assignment criteria or a related assessment rubric will be given at the time an assignment is made. All parentshave access to the teacher’s grade book for their child. If you have questions about accessing your ARIES account, pleasecontact the counseling department. Students are required to keep their returned papers in the English 1 section of their binders.If they are absent when papers are returned, they need to collect them from the returned paper bin. Grades will be entered intoARIES on a timely basis (usually updated daily). Due to large classes, some projects (essays) will require additional gradingtime.

Home access to a computer / printer connected to the Internet (If this is not possible, students may use computers inour school library, the city library or the classroom after school.) However, deadlines must still be met.

Students are expected to treat others with courtesy and respect.

Students are not allowed to eat or drink in the classroom. Gum is never allowed. Water in a clear, re-sealablecontainer is ok.

In the event of a serious infraction, the student will be sent immediately to the office.

Students who choose to eat, chew gum, or drink beverages (other than water mentioned above) will receive a one ortwo hour detention (depending on the classroom) for the first and second offense. The third offense will result in a2-day class suspension for defiance.
