Sometimes it takes a critical situation for a company to earn the opportunity to reveal its true capabilities.

This is what happened after two days of torrential rains caused flooding and power outages at the General Motors Technical Center, the control facility for the company’s worldwide manufacturing, in Warren, Mich. (just north of Detroit).

August storms dumped over 30 million gal-lons of water on the 330-acre campus which houses more than 19,000 employees and includes 25 main buildings and 11 miles of roads and tunnels.

About 60 percent of the campus lost electric-ity and many of the buildings were flooded with over 7 feet of water.

MPW Industrial Services arrived at the site on August 9, one day after Detroit recorded 4.57 inches of total rainfall — the second-heaviest calendar-day rainfall on the city’s record. The only wetter day in the Motor City’s history was a 4.74-inch deluge on July 31, 1925.

ICG Area Sales Manager John Stasie was the first MPW representative to arrive at the Technical Center after Aramark — GM’s site-maintenance management company — asked MPW for assistance. Stasie was already authorized to visit the site and was familiar with the people there.

Stasie’s role at the site was to organize MPW’s operations and act as a liaison to Aramark and GM.

MPW’s emergency-response operations included 40 workers and eight trucks. Crew leaders Derek Weatherwax and Matthew Strawser managed the teams, utilizing MPW’s Outage Trailer as a central command station. MPW crews worked 24 hours a day in 12-hour shifts for 18 days.

MPW crews traveled to Warren from Hebron, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Savannah, and completed cleaning projects ranging from hydroexcavation to vacuuming water from submerged mechanical rooms, to power-washing tunnels and basements.

Every day MPW is evolving, expand-ing into new markets and utilizing new technologies.

As this progress occurs, it is essential that MPW Industrial Services redefine its corporate values and how those values are communicated.

The first step in this process was the crafting of a new corporate mission statement.

MPW’s mission: Create and enhance enduring customer relationships through safety, innovation and ser-vice.

Corporate Training and Development Manager Todd Greer led the process of developing the message, which was approved by the Executive Committee on October 13.

“The most critical element of the new mission statement is that it’s not about us,” said Greer. “It’s about MPW’s inter-nal and external customers. We chose to make our statement about others because it is our commitment to our clients that will drive our success.”

Greer, who came to MPW in June of this year, was impressed with the en-gaged and open-minded nature of the MPW executives who were involved in creating the statement.

“The project was the most cooperative effort I’ve witnessed in a long time,” he said. “I was thrilled with the idea-

“This project displayed a great collaborative effort from MPW and other contractors to assist Aramark and GM,” said Stasie. “It was a great opportunity for us to expose Aramark to the quality and expertise of MPW. Our perfor-mance will pave the way for future opportunities and partnerships with GM and Aramark locations around the country.”

GM’s CEO Mary Barra and Tech-nical Center Maintenance Man-ager Greg Combs were among those who expressed their thanks to MPW for its work during the crisis.

“Your company helped in many ways by bailing out millions of gallons of water, restoring power and repairing significant dam-age,” said Combs. “MPW ensured our customers’ needs were met by focusing on safety, and your expertise and dedication made recovery of operations as fast and as safe as possible.”

sharing process. It got everyone reflecting on our corporate values, on who we are, and what MPW means to our people and customers. It was important to everyone involved that we captured the right messag-ing.”

A key aspect of an effective mission statement is that it must align with the company’s culture.

Leadership felt the best way to keep the mes-sage consistent with the way MPW operates was to keep it clear and succinct. The Execu-

tive Committee condensed the verbiage until it contained just 11 words. The tricky part of that process was making sure the statement didn’t sacrifice context as it lost text.

The completion of the mission statement marks the begin-ning of Greer’s corporate culture initiative, which will coordinate MPW’s

training and communications procedures with the company’s business objectives.

The mission statement will gradually be incorporated into MPW’s signage, website and other marketing materials.

Create and enhance enduring customer relationships through safety, innovation and service.
