FOUR TIMES FOURWith some of the most scenic trails in thecountry, what better way to explore anddiscover remote areas than in a 4x4? Thereare many trails to choose from, whether youare just starting out and need a beginner’strail, or feel the time has come to test yourskill on an expert trail – there’s somethingfor everyone. A selection of top trails is onpage 12, but you should also consider Barber-ton as an ideal 4x4 destination. Numeroustrails of varying lengths and difficulties awaityou, some with real historical importance.Try the Eureka City and Oxwagon trails withaccredited SATOUR guide Rassie Schoeman, who has years of experience and expertiseto share with you. The Eureka trail ends ina tour down the ‘Golden Quarry’, the richestgoldmine ever worked by man.

FOR THE EAGLE-EYEDThis is also prime bird-watching country –especially good because of the differentecological zones such as grassland, wetland,

savannah and mountain habitats, thereforeattracting a wide variety of birds. The recom-mended places for the best and most variedbird-watching are: Lowveld National BotanicalGarden in Nelspruit; Mount Sheba NatureReserve near Pilgrim’s Rest; Kaapsehoop(Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site has beenestablished to protect this endangeredspecies); Blyde River Canyon (viewpointsare famed for sightings of raptors, sometimeseven the exceptionally rare Taita Falcon) andthe northern, southern and central parts ofthe Kruger National Park. The endangeredcranes (wattled, blue and crowned cranes),that can be seen at the Verloren Vallei NatureReserve are also well worth a visit, as is theBird of Prey Centre – both are in Dullstroom.Prior arrangements need to be made beforevisiting the Verloren Vallei Nature Reservedue to the sensitive nature of the cranes.

FLY-BY-NIGHT?Parts of Mpumalanga are best known forthe excellent fly-fishing they offer. The townsof Belfast, Machadodorp, Dullstroom, WatervalBoven and Mashishing are referred to asthe Trout Triangle and have dams well stockedwith brown and rainbow trout. See thecomprehensive guide on pages 38–41.

BEST FOOT FORWARDHiking in Mpumalanga is always made easierby the spectacular natural beauty of theprovince. The natural wonders that you willencounter on your hikes – especially thewaterfalls – are unrivalled and you will seewhy Mpumalanga is considered to be oneof the best hiking destinations in the country.Hiking trails in the Kruger National Park arethe ultimate bush experience. Not only doyou get to experience the unspoilt beauty, you are sure to see some game, historicalsites, interesting vegetation and birds alongthe way. In Kruger, a total of seven trails

encompass some day and overnight hikingtrails. See pages 23, 30 & 31 for moreinformation on selected hiking trails as wellas the hiking tips on page 31.

TAKE A GIANT LEAPThere are a number of spectacular gorgesin Mpumalanga and some rather hectickloofing sites. A travel magazine recentlyrated kloofing in the Blyde River Canyon asone of the 10 best sites in the country, aswell as Sekorokoro on the Olifants River. The canyon is not a kloofing site, but thereare places along the way that can be jumped.Sekorokoro, on the other hand, is incrediblydifficult and for expert kloofers only. Whilstrock hopping and bum sliding sounds likefun, this is an activity for the adventurousand should be led by experienced guides.

FOUR-LEGGED RIDESHorse-riding is popular throughout theprovince. Many accommodation establish-ments offer horse-riding as an activity andthere is no shortage of trails in this rider’sparadise. One of the best horse-riding trailsis a multi-day trail in Kaapsehoop whichincludes some time spent tracking the area’sfamous feral horses. The mountainous terrainmakes for exciting riding, and shorter one-day trails are available.

THE REST OF THE BESTWith a multitude of cliffs and waterfalls inthe region, it’s perfect for abseiling. Thewaterfalls are out of the ordinary and wortha try! Mpumalanga is considered a primehang-gliding and paragliding destination, with excellent winter flying conditions.

Mpumalanga hosts the national paraglidingchampionships, while Barberton isundoubtedly one of the best sites – so good,in fact, that the Gauteng Open is held there!Sabie is the best place for mountain-biking… pure heaven for casual or competitivemountain-bikers. You can choose from self-guided or marked trails covering varyingdistances. Many of the province’s rivers areideal for rafting. One of the largest rapidsbelongs to the Olifants River, combining theexhilarating sport with equally exhilaratinggame-viewing. The best time for rafting isin the rainy months – November to April.Hazyview is the capital of hot-air ballooningand is the destination of internationalballoonists. Mpumalanga has a number ofgreat golf courses and the European PGATour and the South African Sunshine Tourhave been held here. The Gary Player-designed course at the White River CountryClub is a dream … although, it could be anightmare if your drives are attracted towater! There are many bodies of water onwhich to surf or ski and many resorts inMpumalanga offer water sports.

Safety in numbers is a goodpolicy in tricky terrain.

12

• Tread lightly to minimise your impacton the environment and apply theoff-road maxim: as slow as possibleand only as fast as necessary.• Stick to existing tracks wheneveryou travel off-road. A road markedon a map does not automaticallyconfer right of way.• Seek permission before venturingon private or forestry tracks. If you’reunsure, ask.• Avoid damaging wheelspins andexcessive engine revs: choose yourgears intelligently.• In challenging off-road terrain, engage 4WD and low-range gearssooner rather than later.• Appreciate that heavy rain can makecertain dirt roads dangerous orimpassable, so phone ahead to checkon conditions.• Give domestic animals and wildlifethe right of way. Stop, switch off andwait if necessary.• Respect the privacy of others, honouring their right to peace andsolitude.• Don’t litter or leave any signs ofyour passing.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO NELSPRUITThe thriving metropolis of Johannesburg is330km east of Nelspruit, while the MalelaneGate (the southern access point of the KrugerNational Park), is about 60km away, makingNelspruit a favoured hitching post en routeto the park, or even a base camp for dayvisitors (although you’ll need to be an early-riser to make the round trip worthwhile).Nelspruit acts as a good stopover to nearbySwaziland, especially for travellers fromJohannesburg. It is the midpoint of the North-South route that connects KwaZulu-Nataland Zimbabwe and is 190km away fromMaputo, the capital of Mozambique.

DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO KMIA?The new Kruger Mpumalanga InternationalAirport (KMIA) has replaced Skukuza andNelspruit airports as the commercial hub ofair traffic in the region, notably servicingthe Kruger National Park (Numbi Gate is just40km away, around half an hour in the car),

Nelspruit, Sabi Sand Game Reserve, theGreater Limpopo Transfrontier Park and theBlyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Skukuza’sairport is no longer a mass-commercial flightlanding strip, with the bulk of air trafficdescending on the somewhat beautiful KMIA,boasting lovely scenery, located just a shortdrive away from Kruger. Construction costswere in the region of R350-million, and the8000m2 terminal building sports SouthAfrica’s largest thatched roof. Lying 863mabove sea level, the runway is 60m wideand over 3km long, has the capacity to landBoeing 737, 767, 747 and the Airbus series, and it is equipped with state-of-the-artrunway approach lights. Bus transfers areeasy and quick from KMIA to your chosenlodge in Kruger or one of the neighbouringgame reserves, while the elite private gamereserves mostly have their own airstrips.KMIA also services the broader Mpumalangatourism area.

Nelspruit traces its roots back to 1892 whenwork began on a station further up theUmgwenya (Crocodile) River valley. Theagricultural potential of the region (rich soil, abundant water) attracted both farmers andtraders and, though it began ‘life’ as a railwaystation, it only took 13 years for it to blossominto full town status. This town has a veryimportant place on the tourist map as it isa stopover en route to the Kruger NationalPark and is a perfect base for travel acrossSouth Africa’s boundaries. Nelspruit acts asMpumalanga’s trading centre servicing thesurrounding fruit-growing area, and is a vitalsupply centre for Malalane and Komatipoort’slarge sugar mills.

Conditions in the area are ideal for growingcitrus and tropical fruits (notably bananas, oranges, avocado pears, litchis, mangoes,as well as macadamia and pecan nuts), thefertile soils and subtropical climate beinggreat companions for the local farmers (inaddition to the forestry industry). The townhas also built up an impressive array of

places of learning and a varied and vastnumber of facilities to cater for therecreational needs of locals and tourists, and activities include nature trails along theUmgwenya River, bird watching, hiking and4x4 trails. The Sudwala Cultural Village presents visitorswith a walkthrough of the traditional wayof life … with tribal dancing on request.Lowveld Tourism arranges Township Tourswhich include visits to tribal chiefs, sangoma’s(medicine men) and shebeens (informal pubsand bars). The town’s streets are generallywell shaded with pretty flowering trees, making for a pleasant environment forovernight or slightly longer stays. Seek outand sample some of the local produce, especially the delicious ‘home-grown’ fruits.

LOWVELD NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENSet on the banks of the Umgwenya River, and covering 159ha (393 acres), the LowveldNational Botanical Garden near Nelspruithosts around 600 plant and 245 bird species. The Garden claims to house the world’slargest cycad collection. Visitors can enjoya tropical rain forest (the only simulatedrain forest in the world), great bird-watchingspots and a Riverside Trail along theUmgwenya River. The Croc River Enviro Parkhas a good selection of crocs … but also tobe feared are the 88 species of snake in thepark – both indigenous and exotic. Knownas the River of Fear by the local Shangaan, the Umgwenya River has spawned a secondcrocodile park (aka the Crocodile Farm). TheDe Brug Ostrich Farm is the only one of itskind in the province, so saddle up.Top: Nelspruit town centre.

White River Hazyview White River H

White River (aka Wit Rivier, or Mhloppemanzi) is named after the milkyappearance of the river’s water (the result of a high presence of Kaolin).

Page 12: Mpumalanga & Kruger National Park Road Atlas. ISBN 978186809

The White River Museum pays homage tovintage cars, while the Barnyard Theatreoffers a welcome diversion from Hollywoodmovies by staging local productions. WhiteRiver’s trademark is an unusual rock knownas Legogote (‘the rock that leans’). Creativesouls claim that the rock is really in theshape an antelope or a lion’s head.

HAZYVIEWConveniently located close to three of Kruger’sgates (Paul Kruger Gate, 45km; PhabeniGate, 11km; Numbi Gate, 18km), Hazyviewis also a major centre for adventure activities, including abseiling, quadbiking, river-rafting,hiking, balloon trips, bass & trout fishing,4x4 and horse and mountain-bike trails. Theoutskirts of town are particularly lush, andthe two big dams are a major lure for bassfishing enthusiasts. The town began life inthe late 1800s as a trading post to supplyKruger. The Shangana Cultural Village, ashort distance outside of town, gives visitorsan insider’s look at how the traditionalShangaan used to live (including traditionalmeals, shows, lessons in traditional medicineand much more), as well as a market place

tocater for souvenir hunters … or absent-minded gift buyers! The town and environsoffer plenty of accommodation to cater forall needs and budgets.

BASKET CASEAn unforgettable experience is a hot-airballoon ride over the Sabie River Valley, justoutside of Hazyview. From high in the skyyou’ll drift over fruit orchards and bushveld, forests and hills … depending on which waythe wind blows. Flights can end in the neigh-bouring valley … or even the neighbouringvalley’s neighbouring valley! You won’t wantyour money back, as the view from thebasket is spectacular!

Bananas grow better here in Hazyview than anywhere on earth …
