KUALA LUMPUR: The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has allocated RM10,000 to
enhance its "Buy Food Waste" campaign for processing into electricity, next year.
Its president Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said the campaign was a follow-up to the
construction of a Biomass centre in Bandar Bukit Puchong in 2013.
"The second phase was launched early this month. The idea came via a cooperation programme
with Hioki City in Japan, where local authorities buy food waste from the local community," he
told Bernama recently.
MPSJ offers to pay RM1 for each kilogramme of food waste handed over the counter to
encourage the involvement of residents.
Under the biomass project, organic waste will be turned into methane gas which can be
converted into electricity via a process called "Anaerobic Digestion."
The RM200,000 machine can process 500kg of food waste into 5KW of electricity which can light
up two houses for 24 hours.
Nor Hisham said MPSJ has no plans to expand the project but wants to become a pioneer of the
Green City concept.
Director of Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Department, Petaling Jaya City
Council (MBPJ), Lee Lih Shyan said they were converting food waste into biogas which can be
used as cooking gas.
"MBPJ has started the project on a small scale in May using food waste from our canteen. We
plan to expand the project next year," he added.
Meanwhile, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) president Abd Hamid Hussain said they
may implement a similar initiative in future.
Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) may also undertake a similar initiative, said its information
