Wel-come to the 2018 MPIA – AGM. The MPIA Board has had a busy year and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Last November, our government partner released a new funding arrangement for 2019. This arrangement will see the end of the MPIA as a unique Sector under the government funding criteria. Instead, a new Sector, “Traditional and Advanced Manufacturing”, will be established with the MPIA being a part of it, along with other like-minded Sectors.

Thankfully, the MPIA has always partnered with other Sectors and Associations whenever possible. This should bode well for us as we go forward. It is the intention of the Board to ensure the MPIA continues to operate and grow by offering services that matter to our member companies. I assure you the MPIA Directors are working diligently for the good of the Association and we will keep you informed as we continue down this path.

As always, I hope you will consider becoming more involved in the opera-tions of the MPIA. We can always use new ideas and inputs. Contact the MPIA if you are interested.

In closing, I would like to thank the MPIA Board of Directors and staff for their input during the past year and I look forward to working with you over the next year.

Herb Vielhaber, President

Last year, was one of the most successful for the MPIA. I would like to thank the MPIA Board of Directors for their input and support. I also wish to thank our Career and HR Consultant, Elsa Solomon, for her tireless commit-ment to MPIA activities and member support. In addition, a great deal of appreciation goes out to Celine Chin. For the past several years, Celine has designed most of our marketing and promotional material.

From Education to Awareness to Engagement, the MPIA has actively sought out opportunities to partner with like-minded organizations, create career awareness and bring companies together to share best practices and new ideas. Our membership with the Printing Industries of America continues to show great results as more companies take advantage of what they have to offer. Last year, the PIA announced their newly designed iLearning Center with webinars specifical-ly tailored to our industry. Check it out! If you need help logging in, please contact our office.

In March, the MPIA joined the re-established Canadian Printing Industries Association. The newly formed Association will be looking at ways to strengthen our industry image and provide resources to help meet the increasing demands of our industry.

While we continue to face challenges, the future can hold exciting opportunities for your Association. I ask all of you to consider ways of supporting the MPIA. Whether attending educational workshops or engagement functions such as the AGM or Name in Print gala dinner, supporting your Association is an activity that benefits everyone.

In closing, I thank you all for your continued support.

CAREER AWARENESSAND HR DEVELOPMENT

AWARENESS

MPIA partnered with schools and nonprofit organizations resulting in more student engagements and understanding of career opportunities in the print sector.

Students from RB Russell and Nelson McIntyre Collegiate toured MITT and Transcontinental.

MPIA helped coordinate the Annual Take Our Kids to Work Day bus tour including a tour at Duha Group. 42 students from: Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, Hugh John MacDonald, Kelvin High School, Nelson McIntyre Colle-giate, Glenlawn Collegiate, Isaac Brock School, and JH Bruns Collegiate attended the tour.

MPIA has established a partnership with Opportunities for Employment (OFE) resulting in more employ-ment in our industry. Through the OFE’s Employment Program, Friesens Corporation successfully hired and relocated several people to Altona.

It has been a privilege to work with a company that cares so deeply about their staff and their community, and to see how much extra time and energy they have invested in this family. For the first time in their lives, this family is starting to experience the stability of full-time jobs. They are now starting to save money in order to buy their first house as a home for their kids to grow up, and have started to really set down roots. ”

Cheryl Partridge, Employment Coach Research and Innovation Opportunities for Employment

Pollard Banknote also presented to OFE clients and interviewed potential candidates. A number of people were hired as a result of this initiative.
