Minorplanet assets officially acquired by VMSOne of Australia’s leading GPS
vehicle tracking service providers, Minorplanet Asia Pacific, announced that Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) has completed a business asset purchase of the organisation, which will give the company a fresh start with new shareholders and new directors, whilst maintaining the core local management team. Minorplanet CEO, Steve Green said that he is delighted with this outcome, which has allowed the company to break ties with its UK parent. “It’s great to have a shareholder group committed to
the Asia Pacific business and one that is prepared to invest in our business and promote our position in this region. “We’re also happy to put an end to the speculation in the market, which has surrounded our business over the last couple of months.” Vehicle Management Systems and new Minorplanet Managing Director, Dean Verberne, said the company is excited about the acquisition and already working closely with the team to develop the plans to accelerate business growth.Mr Green continued, “We’ve got many
thousands of users across our group and our main concern was to ensure we maintained services while the sale was completed. Our new owner is committed to business continuity and growth, which is great for our people, customers and many business partners. We would like to assure our customers that all services, commercial and regulatory, will continue to be delivered. Australia’s biggest race kart manufacturer recently purchased
a UD PK10 to be used as a mobile race workshop and a transporter for its official race and development teams.Manufacturer of Arrow Karts, Drew Price Engineering (DPE), manufactures up to 2000 race karts each year and purchased the new UD PK10 to replace its UD MK which it had outgrown.DPE’s Manager of Development and Racing, Darren Hossack, asserted that the company was pleased with the performance of the previous truck. He said, “The only reason we replaced the old UD was because we had outgrown it and we needed a higher grossing truck. The MK was a bloody good truck and we had it on the road for the past five years, however with all our karts, spares and tools on board it was just a little too small for our needs these days. “We have a purpose built body that houses all our race karts and spares as well as providing us with a
race workshop when we are at the track racing or testing, fortunately by sticking with UD we could just swap our body across to the new truck,” he added. From its Melbourne base, the Arrow Karts team is required to travel interstate at least seven times a year for championship race kart meetings, driven by Darren. He commented, “I am no truckie, I drive race cars when
I am not running the kart team, but with cruise control, air bag suspension on the PK10 and its suspended cab and seat, it is incredibly easy and comfortable to drive, it is more like driving a car really.”The truck generally carts up to six karts along with a wide range of spare parts, including 90 rear axles, 25 spare engines and spare kart tyres. ■

Hino’s SS2848 and SS2848 High Roof heavy-duty trucks are now
offered with the overdrive version of the ZF AS-Tronic 16-speed automated manual transmission behind the E13C Hino 13-litre inline six cylinder engines delivering 353kW at 1800rpm and 2157Nm of torque at 1100rpm.The AS-Tronic features adaptive gear selection and a manual mode, with sequential-shift gear selection. Ratio changes are therefore much faster than what is possible with a manual transmission. The gear selector level has positions for single and two-gear up-shifts or down-shifts, with the gear in use shown on the dashboard display.The ZF AS-Tronic transmission is 2600Nm capable and in the Hino 2848
AMT, the ZF Intarder 2 integrated transmission retarder is fitted as a standard specification, handling between 80-90 percent of the task of slowing the truck when a trailer is connected. This latest upgrade is part

A new $12.9 million Heavy Commercial Vehicle and Diesel Fitting Training
Facility was officially opened at SkillsTech Australia’s Acacia Ridge Training Centre in Brisbane on Friday August 13. SkillsTech Australia is the leading TAFE institute for trade and technician training. In July 2009, SkillsTech Australia Institute Director Mary Campbell said the Federal and Queensland Governments committed $12.9 million to the development of a state of the art facility at Acacia Ridge.“It is a significant milestone for the completion of this extensive project,” Ms Campbell said. The new 4000 square metre training facility was officially opened by Mr Graham Perrett MP, Federal Member for Moreton. “In addition, we were pleased to welcome so many peak industry representatives to our event – such a great show of support,” said Ms Campbell. The purpose-built facility was developed in close association with the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Queensland (CVIAQ) and provides workshop areas and laboratories equipped with the latest technology to deliver pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship/
traineeship and post-trade training for the road transport, mining, gas and construction maintenance industries.“Today, there are approximately 900 heavy commercial vehicle and diesel fitting students at SkillsTech Australia and it is expected that this number will grow significantly over the next five years,” Ms Campbell said.“This is a world-class facility that will deliver the finest training to Queenslanders at the highest of industry standards with the latest sustainable technologies.”
The $10 million federal grant was obtained through the Training Infrastructure Investment for Tomorrow program and the Better TAFE Facilities program elements of the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund.The Queensland State Government contributed $2.9 million towards the project under the Queensland Skills Plan. The Queensland Government has committed more than $200 million to the development of facilities at SkillsTech Australia to address skills shortages, with over $140 million invested so far. ■

Accuweigh’s Brisbane branch recently supplied and fitted
onboard truck scales to 15 light tipper trucks belonging to Brisbane City Council to ensure the trucks can’t inadvertently be operated when overloaded.The weight monitoring system provides both visible and highly audible alarms to the driver whenever
the RGVM of the vehicle is exceeded. Accuweigh’s onboard truck scales are designed for single axle vehicles, including vans, utilities and light trucks, with a registered gross vehicle mass of up to seven tonnes. Sensors are located on the suspension at each wheel providing overload protection for the front axle, the rear axle and also the combined
RGVM. The tipper trucks were supplied by Brisbane Isuzu with the onboard weighing systems fitted by Accuweigh’s Salisbury branch prior to delivery of the trucks to BCC. The installation is very straightforward with approximately one day required to complete each install, including calibration and full weight testing of the payload monitoring systems. ■

offered with the overdrive version of the ZF AS-Tronic 16-speed automated manual transmission behind the E13C Hino 13-litre inline six cylinder engines delivering 353kW at 1800rpm and 2157Nm of torque at 1100rpm.The AS-Tronic features adaptive gear selection and a manual mode, with sequential-shift gear selection. Ratio changes are therefore much faster than what is possible with a manual transmission.
