The ‘Mozarabs’ were Christians who lived in southern Spain under
Muslim rule. Some scholars connect the Mozarabic church to the Celtic
church. The prayers of the Mozarabic Rite do show a similarity to Celtic
prayers with their plays on words and repetitions or parallel thoughts.
The prayers presented here are all taken from the 1881 book Mozarabic
Collects edited by Charles Hale. The ‘Elizabethan’ or traditional
liturgical English used at the time can be a great barrier for the modern
reader, both in understanding the meaning of the prayers, and in seeing
the beauty of the content.
My goal in updating the language is both academic—to show the true
content of the prayers for the value of understanding the history of the
Mozarabic church—and practical, to make these prayers usable in
today’s worship settings.
All of the prayers from Hale’s work are included along with some short
orders of worship for morning and evening prayer. The names and
numbering of the Sundays follows the old system in order to be
analogous to the original work by Hale. I also added numbers after each
prayer. This is done for easy identification, and with the hopes that in the
future a chart can be arranged so the prayers may be used in a topical
agreement with modern lectionaries.
For more information on the Mozarabic church, I will simply provide a
link to Mozarabic Collects in Google Books rather than repeat the
information here.

THE COLLECTS FOR THE SEASONS OF THE
CHRISTIAN YEAR
ADVENT TO CHRISTMAS
O God,
you were pleased to announce the coming of your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
with choirs of angels who proclaimed with their song,
“Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.”
Grant that we may so pass our time here to your glory,
that at your Son’s second coming
we may rejoice before him.
Amen. [1]
CHRISTMAS TO SEPTUAGESIMA
O blessed Savior
as the prophets foretold,
you were born of a virgin,
and you came to be
a Treasure to the poor,
a Light to those who walk in darkness,
the Strength of the weak,
the Health of the sick,
and the Resurrection of the dead;
Grant that through your glorious nativity
we may be loosed from the bonds of our sins,
and may always rejoice in your praise.
Amen. [2]
LENT
O Lord,
let everyone hear you,
let the rich and the poor bow down their hearts to you.
May our souls seek you alone.
May we praise you, with all your saints in eternal joy,
and find you our exceedingly great reward.
Amen. [3]
6
EASTER THROUGH EASTER 5
O Christ our God,
we give you glory.
as you died for our sins
and rose from the dead on the third day,
so may the dead in glory,
freed from sin through you,
find perpetual joy in you. Amen. [4]
ASCENSION TO PENTECOST
O Lord, our Savior,
you ascended on high in glory,
in the sight of your disciples.
Lift our hearts and minds above the things of earth,
that we may not be ashamed before you
when you come to be our judge.
Amen. [5]
PENTECOST AND TRINITY SUNDAY
O God the Holy Spirit,
with the Father and the Son together
you are worshiped and glorified.
Teach us to know the truth,
and to always rejoice in the truth.
Amen. [6]
TRINITY 1 THROUGH TRINITY LAST
O Lord,
to you is given all authority in heaven and earth.
To you the Church on earth sings its praise.
Grant, almighty God,
that as we declare your praise,
you also would listen to our prayers.
Amen. [7]
7
SAINTS’ DAYS
O God, you gave your blessed saints
grace and faith to despise the world
and to follow you.
Mercifully hear our prayers,
Put to death in us all desires for what is evil,
that our hearts may ever glow with love for you.
Amen. [8]
THE COLLECTS FOR THE SUNDAYS AND OTHER
HOLY DAYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
O Lord Jesus Christ,
at your first coming you humbled yourself because of our sins.
At your second coming our sins will be done away by your mercy,
and we will be numbered with your saints in glory everlasting;
through your merits, O blessed Savior,
with the Father and the Holy Spirit
you live and reign,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [9]
THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT
O God,
by your holy prophets
you promised that your only Son
would come in the flesh for us
and be born of a virgin.
In these last days you have fulfilled your Word.
When he who came to redeem the world
comes to be our judge,
let us not be put to shame;
through the merits of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [10]
8
THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Heavenly Father,
you sent your messengers
to tell of the birth of your Son,
that people might believe in him.
Open our ears to hear your call,
to repent of our sins,
and to seek our heavenly inheritance.
May we profess Christ until we stand by his grace
before the glory of your majesty;
Grant this for the sake of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [11]
THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT
O Lord,
raise up your power and come to deliver us,
that we who are oppressed by temptations
may be defended by your power,
that the hosts of the enemy may never prevail against us.
Hear us in your mercy, O Lord Christ,
who with the Father and the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [12]
CHRISTMAS DAY
O Lord Jesus Christ,
true God from true God,
you became a little child for us so the world you made would be saved.
Just as a child is born to us and a Son is given to us,
may we be born again through you
and always remain in the number
of God’s faithful children;
through your merits, O blessed Savior,
with the Father and the Holy Spirit
you live and reign,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [13]
9
THE SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS
O God, Son of God,
your name endures forever,
and yet you took on yourself our nature to redeem the world.
Grant that we who are glad at your first coming
may rejoice in your full salvation when you come to be our judge;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [14]
NEW YEAR’S EVE
O God,
your days are without beginning and without end.
We dedicate this coming year to you.
Give us such prosperity as you know is good for us,
and make us abound in doing whatever is pleasing to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [16]
NEW YEAR’S DAY (CIRCUMCISION/NAME OF JESUS)
O Jesus, our Savior and our Lord,
by the proclamation of your grace,
you took the yoke of the law from our necks,
and removed the burden from our shoulders to your own;
Hear the prayers of your Church,
that we may joyfully serve you here,
and see your glorious presence in all its joy in the life to come;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [15]
10
THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD
O Jesus Christ our King,
your sign to the Magi was a bright shining star.
Enlighten us by your grace,
and fill us with all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
grant this because of your goodness,
Jesus Christ our Lord,
whose kingdom and dominion
endure through all ages.
Amen. [17]
THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY, THE
BAPTISM OF OUR LORD
O Lord Jesus Christ,
in order to fulfill all righteousness,
you were baptized by John in the Jordan.
Clothe us with this same righteousness,
that as your baptized people,
we, too, may be called beloved children of your Father,
and because of you, know he is well pleased with us;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [17A]1
THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
O Lord God,
you always hear those who cry to you,
and you show your tender mercy to those who are distressed.
Help us to despise the emptiness of this world,
renounce its deceits,
and find in Christ our eternal and exceedingly great reward;
Grant this, for the sake of your blessed Son, our Savior.
Amen. [18]

11
THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
O almighty God,
you raised up your blessed Son in righteousness,
and revealed him in the flesh;
Grant that we may always follow him both in word and deed,
so that, listening to him with our hearts,
we may be partakers of his glory;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [19]
THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
O God the Father Almighty,
listen to our prayers,
and give us the fullness of love and peace.
May we always put our faith in your mercy,
and always live in hope and love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [20]
THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
O Lord our Strength,
increase in us a true love of your holy name,
that we trust in your grace,
fear no earthly evil,
set our hearts on no earthly good,
and finally rejoice in your full salvation;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [21]
THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Only Son of God the Father,
you took on yourself our nature to save the world,
and by humbling yourself
you opened the way to Paradise again to fallen humanity;
Wash away our iniquities, cleanse us from our sins,
that we may be imitate you as dearly loved children;
through your mercy,
O our God, you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [22]
12
THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
O God,
author of peace,
may we be so held in the bonds of love,
that those who are peaceful may remain in peace,
and that those who differ may be reconciled by your mercy;
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.
Amen. [23]
THE TRANSFIGURAITON OF OUR LORD
Jesus Christ,
beloved Son of your Father,
you shone like the sun on the holy mountain
in the presence of Moses, Elijah and your disciples.
May we also behold your glory
when we listen to you as the Father commanded;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [23A] 2
SEPTUAGESIMA
O God, good and gracious,
you have great mercy toward all who call on you.
Listen to our cry,
and in your mercy, take away our offences,
that we may serve you faithfully here,
and stand in your presence in glory hereafter;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [24]

13
SEXAGESIMA
O God,
you so loved the world
that you gave your only Son
to reconcile the earthly with the heavenly;
Move us to love you above all things,
that we love our friends in you,
and our enemies for you;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [25]
QUINQUAGESIMA
O God of all mercies,
O Lord of all might;
Give us an abundance of your goodness,
remove our feet from evil,
and enable us to walk in the path which leads to you;
through Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord.
Amen. [26]
ASH WEDNESDAY
O God,
you do not desire the death of sinners,
but you want them to turn to you and live.
Look with pity on the weakness of our mortal nature.
We confess that we are but ashes,
and for our wickedness we deserve to return to the dust.
Forgive all our sins,
and give us the blessings that come with true repentance;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [27]
Almighty and eternal God,
you have mercy on all people,
you despise nothing you have made,
and you forgive the sins of all those who repent.
As we humble ourselves in dust and ashes before you,
give us your perfect remission and forgiveness,
for the glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [28]
14
THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
O Christ, Son of God,
for our sake you fasted forty days and allowed yourself to be tempted.
Protect us so that we may not be led astray by any temptation.
Since man does not live by bread alone,
nourish our souls with the heavenly food of your Word;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [29]
THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
O Jesus, Son of God the Father,
Fount of Life everlasting,
give your living water to us who thirst,
give us eternal life.
Hear us in your mercy, O Christ Jesus.
With the Father and the Holy Spirit,
we worship and glorify you,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [30]
THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
O Lord Jesus Christ,
by your almighty power
you opened the eyes of the blind,
and showed yourself to them.
Turn our eyes away from worthless things,
and lead us to love you sincerely;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [31]
15
THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT
O Lord, our Light and our Salvation,
remove the darkness of sorrow and ignorance.
Enlighten us with true wisdom,
and give us our sure hope in you;
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
we worship and glorify you,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [32]
THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT
O holy Jesus, most loving Savior,
you called out to Lazarus
and made him come out of his tomb.
May we hear you with our hearts, arise from our sins,
and serve you in newness of life;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [33]
PALM SUNDAY
O Lord Jesus Christ,
when you entered Jerusalem,
great crowds waved palm branches and cried “Hosanna.”
Save us now from our sins,
and make us to rejoice in you,
our only Redeemer;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [34]
16
HOLY WEEK
O God, Son of God,
you took on yourself our nature
and suffered death on the cross for us.
By your Passion you have set us free from eternal death.
Preserve us in your grace;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [35]
MAUNDY/HOLY THURSDAY
O Christ, Lamb of God,
at that Passover meal,
you offered your own body and blood,
and so you revealed yourself as the true Passover lamb.
As we receive the gifts you offer,
may your blood spare us from eternal death,
that we may enjoy fellowship and freedom with you forever.
You are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen.3 [35A]
GOOD FRIDAY
O God, Son of God,
you suffered for us,
the righteous for the unrighteous.
Save us by the shame of your Passion,
and clothe us with the robe of your righteousness.
Through the suffering and death you did not deserve,
we have escaped the punishment our sins have deserved.
Amen. [36]

17
O Lord,
hear the sorrowful sighing of your church,
for whom you suffered death on the cross.
Let us, whose sole trust is in what you endured for us,
never be put to shame,
be our support in all trials,
and crown us at last with glory everlasting.
Amen. [37]
EASTER EVE
O Lord Jesus Christ,
for our sins you endured the cross and the grave,
and on the third day you rose again from the tomb.
Just as you have cleansed us from our sin by your blood,
and as we are buried with you in baptism,
so by your grace, let us share in your resurrection;
through your mercy,
O our God, you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [38]
EASTER DAY
O Lord Jesus Christ,
you died for the sins of the whole world,
and on this day you rose from the dead.
By your Resurrection put the sin within us to death.
As you destroyed the power of death by your cross and passion,
share with us your blessed life;
through your merits, O blessed Savior,
you live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [39]
18
THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
O Lion of the tribe of Judah, O Root of David,
enlighten our hearts and minds with your true wisdom,
that we who rejoice in your Resurrection,

in praising your glorious name;
with the Father and the Holy Spirit
you live and reign,
ever one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [40]

by your holy inspiration
teach us what we ought to do,
and by your grace give us the power to do it;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [41]
THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
O Christ, true Son of God,
Lamb who was slain, now risen in glory,
listen to our prayers.
Grant that we may die to all that is evil,
and rise to good works;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [42]
19
THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
O Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true Man,
you do not change,
and you are holy in all your works.

through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [43]
THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER
O Lord, save us who hope in you,
comfort us with your Word,
whom you have redeemed with your most precious blood,
and grant us, with you, perpetual joy and happiness,
where sighing is at an end, and sorrow cannot come;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed, and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [44]
ROGATION DAYS
O Lord our God,
you are generous in your goodness
to all who confess their sins to you.
Have mercy on us, your unworthy servants.
Give us fruitful seasons,
that our land may yield its harvest,
and make the good seed of your Word
sink deep into our hearts,
and bring forth fruit in our lives
to the glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [45]
20
ASCENSION DAY
O Lord, King of glory,
when you fulfilled all that the prophets had spoken about you,
you ascended to your Father’s throne,
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
While you reign in heaven,
do not let us be weighed down by earthly things,
but keep our hearts looking upward
where our Redeemer has gone before;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [46]
THE SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION DAY
O Lord, strong and mighty, Lord of hosts, and King of glory;
cleanse our hearts from sin,
keep our hands pure,
and turn our minds away from empty things,
so that, in the end
we may stand in your holy place,
and receive blessing from you;
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
we worship and glorify you as one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [47]
THE DAY OF PENTECOST (WHITSUNDAY)
O Holy Spirit,
on Pentecost you descended on the apostles as tongues of fire.
Take away all vices from our hearts,

with the Father and the Son,
you live and reign,
ever one God,
now and forever.
Amen. [48]

Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen. [50]

through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [52]

you are blessed,

your Son, our Savior.

THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
You alone heal the wounds of our sins,
and you show goodness everlasting in the Land of the Living;
Grant that we may serve you faithfully with a quiet mind in this world,
and going forth in your love,
may praise and bless you forever in the world to come;
through your mercy, O our God,
you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen. [74]
ST. ANDREW, APOSTLE (NOVEMBER 30)
Almighty God, you gave your blessed apostle St. Andrew such grace that
he readily heard the calling of your Son, Jesus Christ, and followed him
without delay. Grant that we may also follow Christ, despising the world,
which in its present form is passing away, and so inherit eternal joys;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [75]
ST. THOMAS, APOSTLE (DECEMBER 21)
O almighty God, your disciple Thomas doubted, and you taught us how

move us to always serve you to your glory; through Jesus Christ, your
Son our Lord. Amen. [76]
ST. STEPHEN, DEACON AND MARTYR (DECEMBER 26)
O Lord Jesus Christ, you gave your first martyr St. Stephen grace to
follow your example in suffering and in patience. Help us in all our

may pray for those who would do us harm, to you, O blessed Savior.
With the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, now
and forever. Amen. [77]
ST. JOHN, APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST (DECEMBER 27)

and govern all things, now and forever. Amen. [78]
30
THE HOLY INNOCENTS, MARTYRS (DECEMBER 28)
O God, out of the mouths of babes and infants have ordained praise, and
you have made little children glorify you by the shedding of their blood.
Put to death in us all evil desires, and give us a ready will to serve you
with the simplicity of children and with the steadfastness of strong men;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [79]

O Christ, the Son of God, you graciously chose Saint Paul to be your

forth fruit to your glory; with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and
reign, one God, now and forever. Amen. [80]
THE PRESENTATION (FEBRUARY 2)
Almighty and eternal God, on this day, your only Son was presented in

Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [81]
ST. MATTHIAS, APOSTLE (FEBRUARY 24)

church from false apostles, and always bless us with faithful ministers of
your Word and sacraments; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [82]
THE ANNUNCIATION (MARCH 25)

and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, one God, now and forever.
Amen. [83]

and forever. Amen. [84]

Grant, O Lord, that your Church throughout the world may be held
together in unity. Preserve it from heresies and divisions, and from all
that might hinder godly unity. And as in heaven and on earth you are
worshiped as one Lord, so may all mankind serve you in the unity of one
faith; through Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. [101]
FOR CONVERSION OF THE HEATHEN
Most gracious God, you have gathered into your Church a great company
out of all nations. Fulfil what you have foretold by your Holy Prophets,
that all the ends of the world will repent and be turned to you, that all the
nations may worship before you; through the only Savior of the world,
your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [102]
IN AFFLICTION
O Lord God, good and gracious, grant that we may not be depressed
under the afflictions you see fit to lay on us, but enable us to always trust
in your goodness, and be brought through the trials of this world to the
joys of the life to come; through your mercy, O our God, and for the sake
of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. [103]
FOR OTHERS IN AFFLICTION
O God, you do not despise the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire
of those who are sorrowful. Mercifully accept our prayers which we
make for your servants now suffering adversity, and grant that those evils
which either the devil or man works against them may be brought to
nothing, and by your good providence may be dispersed, that so,
delivered from harm by your mercy, they may evermore give thanks to
you in your Holy Church; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [104]
35
FOR CHARITY TO THE POOR
O Lord, make us obedient to your will, and always kind to the poor and
needy, so that, abounding in works of mercy, we may be inheritors of
your eternal Kingdom; through your mercy, O our God, and for the sake
of him who gave himself for us, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
[105]
FOR TRAVELERS
O Lord, direct the way of your servants in peace, for whom we pray to
you. Allow them to journey safely, if it is your will, and fulfil their
desires as may be most useful for them. Grant that what they now
undertake in humble dependence on your goodness, they may complete
with hearts full of gratitude to you for your abundant mercy; through
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [106]

I.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Psalm 51
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 9 Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Glory and honor be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.
Prayer
O Lord, turn your face from our sins,
and put away all our misdeeds.
Do not look on our evil deeds,
42
but in your mercy, hear our confessions.
Since you are pleased
with the sacrifice of a broken and a contrite heart,
empower us to offer what you require,
and give us the pardon you promise the penitent;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [115]
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily
bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the
kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. 5 Amen.
O Lord, open our lips,
And our mouths will declare your praise.
Hasten to save us, O God,
O Lord, come quickly to help us.
II.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! 2 O Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my pleas for mercy! 3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the Lord

and with him is plentiful redemption. 8 And he will redeem Israel
from all his iniquities.
Glory and honor be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever. Amen.
Prayer
O Lord, hear us when we call to you.
We acknowledge our faults,
and can not hide our sins from you.
Against you, you only, have we sinned,
and confessing we ask your favor.
We have strayed from your commandments,
and have not kept your law.
O Lord, turn and deliver your servants,
pardon our sins,
and in your great goodness,
give us your abundant mercy,
for the sake of him who shed his precious blood to redeem us,
your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [116]

CANTICLES
BENEDICTUS ES 29 Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors,
and to be praised and highly exalted forever; 30 and blessed is your glorious, holy name,
and to be highly praised and highly exalted forever; 31 blessed are you in the shrine of your holy glory,
and to be extolled and highly glorified forever. 32 Blessed are you, who sits upon cherubim and looks upon the deeps,
and to be praised and highly exalted forever. 33 Blessed are you upon the throne of your kingdom
and to be extolled and highly glorified forever. 34 Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven,
and to be sung and glorified forever.
(Text from The Prayer of Azaraiah and the Song of the Three Holy
Children, Apocrypha, ESV, Concordia edition.)
BENEDICTUS
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:68-79 ESV)
45
MAGNIFICAT
“My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” (Luke 1:46-55 ESV)
NUNC DIMITTIS 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,
according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32 ESV)
