What is multiple sclerosis?3

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the

central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord). It

is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. This means the immune

system incorrectly attacks the person’s healthy tissue.

When a person has MS, he or she loses myelin in more than one, or

multiple, areas. The resulting scar tissue is called sclerosis. Some-

times the nerve fi ber itself is damaged or broken. When myelin is

destroyed or damaged, the nerves can’t conduct electrical impulses

to and from the brain as well. This breakdown is what produces the

symptoms of MS.

MS can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination,

slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with

memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness and more. These

problems may be permanent or may come and go.

Leadership ReportWe are pleased to present the National MS Society New York City Chapter Annual Report for the fi scal year 2007. It was a bittersweet year for the chapter fi lled with many great successes and accomplishments but also a year when the MS commu-nity lost a dear friend and champion with the sudden death of Beverly Sills Greenough. Beverly was not only a famed opera star and philanthropist, she was a long-time member of our board of trustees and co-chair, as well as a woman who knew MS; her daughter lives with the disease. We hope to continue Beverly’s efforts with the help of her daughter, and this sum-mer created the Beverly Sills Greenough and Meredith Greenough Fund for Multiple Sclerosis to help people living with MS now. Nothing would make us prouder than being able to carry forward Beverly’s great work in New York City and continu-ing to offer the programs and services that are the hallmark of our chapter’s work and funding national research initiatives.

These accomplishments over the past year would not have been possible without the commitment of the Board of Trustees, chapter staff, volunteers and our chapter “family” – members, donors, scientists and clinicians. Thank you to all who have been and will continue to be a part of our important work.

We are proud of what we have been able to achieve in 2007, but we will not rest on our successes. There is much work to be done. Further advances in research are necessary to fi nd the cause, better treatments and ultimately, a cure for MS. Support services for people with MS and their families continue to play a vital role in helping people better cope with the conse-quences of this debilitating disease. We must reach higher in our fundraising goals. We must do all of this so that some day we will stand together to announce that we now live in a world free from MS.

The New York City Chapter raised $9.6 million, $1.5 million greater than 2006.

The chapter allocated $2.9 million to the National MS Society for continued research initiatives and national activities, including 33 individual research projects in New York City. $4.6 million was spent on local chapter programs and services.

At the Society’s 2007 National Conference, the chapter received the prestigious Cavallo Circle of Honor Award for excellence in advocacy, professional education and client programs, and was bestowed with a Nationwide Excellence in Programming Grant for our Hispanic Outreach Edu-cational Program. Additionally, Anne M. Davis Esq., the chapter’s volunteer Program Director of Legal Services, was inducted into the Advocacy Hall of Fame.

We held our fi rst MS Health Fair in the Bronx, enlistinglocal medical professionals and government offi cials to speak and over 300 residents attended.

Our mission continues…We helped the thousands of New Yorkers impacted by MS move their lives forward by providing hundreds of comprehensive support services and educational programs to people with MS, their family and friends, and raising funds locally to support the National MS Society’s initiatives.

Our outreach to the Hispanic community continued and we hosted our second annual Family Day this year at Ballet Hispanico with a capacity crowd of 120 attendees.

The MS Walk in April drew more than 7,400 registered participants in Manhattan and Staten Island and raised $2.9 million, making the NYC MS Walk one of the highest fundraising MS Walks in the country.

The 22nd annual MS Bike Tour in October once again surpassed the $2 million mark due to the tireless efforts of more than 5,100 registered riders, volunteers and sponsors.

The chapter was able to fi nd a temporary venue for the 23rd anniversary of The Manhattan Society’s Ultimate Summertime Party while the USS Intrepid was in dry dock and raised $123,000.

Investigators found differences in immune system-responses between a group of African Americans with MS compared with Caucasians, which may help explain fi ndings that clinical symptoms differed between these groups.

Researchers reported that a small protein (alpha B-crystallin) normally produced by cells to protect against injury may itself be a target of the MS im-mune attack.

Two groups reported on studies of rituximab – which may play a role in the immune attack on brain and spinal cord tissues in MS. This drug is also being clinically tested in primary-progressive MS.

Researchers compared levels of vitamin D in blood serum and found that those with higher levels of vi-tamin D were at lower risk for later developing MS.

Researchers found that sun exposure during child-hood was associated with a reduced risk of MS in a study of 79 pairs of twins in which one twin had MS.

Several large-scale clinical trials in different forms of MS were launched, including ones testing oral medications, and a multi-center trial of the pregnan-cy hormone estriol in women with early relapsing-remitting MS.

Moving toward better treatmentsand a cure Research highlights

Two new genetic variations associated with MS were identifi ed.

There is growing evidence of a link, though not cau-sation, between the Epstein-Barr virus and MS.

A large-scale analysis suggests that disease-modi-fying drugs for MS are effective in delaying disabil-ity progression in people whose MS started with relapses.

A stem cell research summit explored the potential of all types of stem cell research for the treatment, prevention and cure of MS.

Italian researchers reported on a scan of the genetic material of a group of 197 people with primary-progressive MS.

Researchers showed for the fi rst time that early treatment can slow the rate at which disability progresses in individuals who have had a fi rst event suggestive of MS.

The journal Neurology published a supplement on pediatric MS, the fi rst of its kind, written by the International Pediatric MS Study Group.

Thanks to generous contributors, the Society invested over $46 million into more than 440 new and ongoing MS research projects as part of its international effort to prevent, treat and cure MS.

Signifi cant advances have been made in both clinical and laboratory studies in MS, more than 130 clinical trials are underway around the world, and still other experimental drugs are in the pipeline. Key highlights of the year include:

Promise: 2010

To encourage innovative research into highly promis-ing areas and to improve MS patient care, the Society launched the Promise: 2010 Campaign. This nation-wide effort fueled by local MS chapters will raise over $30 million by 2010 to fund four targeted areas that hold great research potential, but which have so far been under-explored:

Nervous system repair and protection

Care and treatment for children with MS

Lesion differences

Impact of the disease on a carefully monitored MS population group

These investments have made possible signifi cant advancements towards fi nding effective treatments and improving diagnosis, rehabilitation and symptom-atic therapy for people with all forms of MS, as well as bringing us closer to a cure.

Our special events help create connections throughout and beyond the MS community. Through participation and fundraising, more than 15,000 people raised nearly $10 million. Here are some highlights:

The Dinner of Champions gala honoring Christo-pher O’Brien, Larry King, and Suze Orman raised $1,233,000 and hosted over 400 guests.

A premier event of the self-help publishing industry, the Books for a Better Life Awards raised $202,000 and hosted 350 guests.

The inaugural Women Against MS (WAMS) event, hosted by Meredith Vieira and Beverly Sills Greenough, featured the "Faith Club" authors at Christie’s Auction House, raised $173,000.

The MS Walk took place on Staten Island and in Manhattan with a total of 7,439 registered walkers whose fundraising efforts garnered $2,941,000.

At Belmont Park, more than 350 guests enjoyed a day of racing and a spectacular silent auction at the Race Against MS, which raised $240,000.

With the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum under renovation, the Ultimate Summertime Party tempo-rarily moved to Victorian Gardens in Central Park, where 1,054 guests helped raise $123,000.

The only bike tour in New York City to travel through the Lincoln Tunnel, the MS Bike Tour collected $2,409,000 in donations and registered 5,100 riders.

Moving to mobilize talent and passion Volunteerism

Volunteers are integral partners in our efforts to serve the thousands of New Yorkers living with MS and their families, contributing valuable resources—time, knowledge, skills, and leadership—that infuse the organization with energy and passion. The chapter is enriched by a large network of volunteers who are excited by their work and empowered to achieve the mission of the organization.
