William Felton “Bill” Russell, an NBA hall-of-famer, was born on this day in Monroe, La. in 1934. He is widely considered to be the first African-American to achieve a ‘superstar’ status in the NBA and was also the first African-American to coach an NBA team. Russell was the centerpiece of the Boston Celtics’ dynasty that won 11 NBA Championships during Russell’s 13-year career.

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month essay contest

The Multi-Cultural Heritage Committee will be holding an essay contest for Black History Month. All essays must be e-mailed by Monday, Feb. 14 to allow for judging of the essays. The top three will be invited to read their essay aloud at the program on Friday, Feb. 18 and the top essay will also be published in the POD. The following themes to choose from will include but not limited to:-What Black History Month means to me-How the leaders of yesterday have influenced me as a leader today-How the sacrifices of our ancestors have shaped our future. E-mail all essays (word format) to the Multi-Cultural Heritage Committee. Once we receive all essays they will be placed in the MCHC folder S:\Public\Command\MCHC\Black History\2011 Essay’s and voted on Tuesday, 15 February. MARMARIS, Turkey – Four Sailors assigned to the “Red Rippers” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11 saved a Turkish man’s life by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while on liberty in Marmaris, Turkey, Feb. 10 from the deployed aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Aviation Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class (AW) Christopher Hockey, Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Jacob Kudrin, Aviation Machinist’s Mate Airman Brian Jones, and Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman Brandon Plummer were

of the entire time I’ve been in the Navy,” said Hockey. “The whole magnitude of the situation took a few seconds to set in and was a little overwhelming, but I was happy to help.” The four Sailors’ boss agrees. “They really made us proud,” said Cmdr. Daniel Sullivan, the executive officer of VFA-11. “People take CPR training for granted sometimes and don’t believe that they will ever have to use it in a real situation. These Sailors proved how useful it is, and they made a difference in this man’s life.”

checked the man for a pulse and found none, they told nearby pedestrians to call for help. Hockey began to administer CPR while the other three Sailors assisted. When police and medical personnel arrived, the Sailors’ efforts successfully revived the injured man. The man was rushed to the hospital for further treatment. Many Sailors learn CPR as part of their Navy training. The Navy also teaches crisis management and how to respond in emergency situations. “I’ve had CPR training over the course
