    personality

    of a

    character.

    The journey

An example: Homer's Odyssey (the story of the

return of Odysseus from the Trojan War; it tookten years.)

    ● The journey is not so much a physical one as apersonal one (all the adventures that Odysseus

undertakes are stages in his personal progress.)● The reader is constantly reminded that he is

coming home and we are invited to judge hisconduct as he deals with various temptations

along the way.● The physical journey is therefore a means for his

    moral and developmental journey.

The man who eventually reaches the end of the journey is not the same man who started it.

    THE HERO

    The hero's

     journey is both an

    actual event and a

    metaphor for the

    emotional or

    psychologicaldevelopment of

    the hero

    character. Thus,

    the journey is

     what causes thehero to change.
