MOUNTAINVIEW NEWS AND REVIEWS JULY 2018 Canada BY BILLY COLLINS I am writing this on a strip of white birch bark that I cut from a tree with a penknife. There is no other way to express ade- quately the immensity of the clouds that are pass- ing over the farms and wooded lakes of Ontario and the end- less visibility that hands you the horizon on a platter. I am also writing this in a wooden canoe, a point of balance in the middle of Lake Couchiching, resting the birch bark against my knees. I can feel the sun’s hands on my bare back, but I am thinking of winter, snow piled up in all the provinces and the solemnity of the long grain-ships that pass the cold months moored at Owen Sound. O Canada, as the anthem goes, scene of my boyhood summers, you are the pack of Sweet Caporals on the table, you are the dove-soft train whistle in the night, you are the empty chair at the end of an empty dock. You are the shelves of books in a lakeside cottage What has become of the languorous girls who would pass the long limp summer evenings reading Cherry Ames, Chief Nurse, and Cherry Ames, Flight Nurse? Where are they now, the ones who shared her adventures as a veterans’ nurse, private duty nurse, visiting nurse, cruise nurse, night supervisor, mountain- eer nurse, dude ranch nurse (there is little she has not done), rest home nurse, department store nurse, boarding school nurse, and country doc- tor's nurse? O Canada, I have not forgotten you, and as I kneel in my canoe, beholding this vision of a bookcase, I pray that I remain in your vast, polar, North American memory. You are the paddle, the snowshoe, the cabin in the pines. You are Jean de Brébeuf with his martyr’s necklace of hatchet heads. You are the moose in the clearing and the moosehead on the wall. You are the rapids, the propeller, the kero- sene lamp. You are the dust that coats the roadside berries. But not only that. You are the two boys with pails walking along that road, and one of them, the taller one minus the straw hat, is me.

REVIEWS JULY 2018

Canada BY BILLY COLLINS

I am writing this on a strip of white birch bark that I cut from a tree with a penknife. There is no other way to express ade-quately the immensity of the clouds that are pass-ing over the farms and wooded lakes of Ontario and the end-less visibility that hands you the horizon on a platter. You are the shelves of books in a lakeside cottage What has become of the languorous girls who would pass the long limp summer evenings reading

Cherry Ames, Chief Nurse, and Cherry Ames, Flight Nurse? Where are they now, the ones who shared her adventures as a veterans’ nurse, private duty nurse, visiting nurse, cruise nurse, night supervisor, mountain-eer nurse, dude ranch nurse (there is little she has not done), rest home nurse, department store nurse, boarding school nurse, and country doc-tor's nurse? O Canada, I have not forgotten you, and as I kneel in my canoe, beholding this vision of a bookcase, I pray that I remain in your vast, polar, North American memory. You are the paddle, the snowshoe, the cabin in the pines. You are Jean de Brébeuf with his martyr’s necklace of hatchet heads. You are the moose in the clearing and the moosehead on the wall. You are the rapids, the propeller, the kero-sene lamp. You are the dust that coats the roadside berries. But not only that. Walkers in the Dining Room

This is a friendly reminder that we do remove all walkers in the dining room for all meals (except walkers with oxygen) . We kindly request that when you sit at your ta-ble you please leave your walker beside you so staff can easily remove it. When walk-ers are moved behind chairs or tables this makes the removal much more difficult for staff to remove them safely and in a timely manner. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter in helping to keep everyone safe.

Staff and Resident Concert and Variety Hour…..

We are having our annual Staff and Resident Variety Hour on Wednesday July 25th from 2:00-3:00 . We welcome all residents to come and participate. If you are interested in nominating someone to do an act or you have an act you would like to perform please sign up on the sheet in the activity room. We are looking for singers, piano players, jokesters, dancers, magicians and more……. If you have a talent we want to celebrate it! Last years show was such a fantastic hit we cant wait to see what this year will bring!

Georgetown Bread Basket….

Thank you so much for all your generous donations to

the Georgetown Bread Basket. We were able to

raise $210 and over 250 lbs of food. Congratulations to Mrs. Betty Mackenzie for

winning the Father Day Gift Basket.

Please note that we will be doing this raffle again in the late fall to help out our local

families in need over the holidays.

Planting Care Wing patio garden makes everyone happy. Brings bright colours and nice backdrop for patio socials or just relaxing in the fresh air.

Painting Bird Houses for the patio was a fun craft and they look Great! We are just waiting

for our feather friends to notice them…..

An elderly man remembers the good old days: “when I was young, my mom could send me to a shop with a single $, and I would bring back 5 pounds of potatoes, 2

breads, a bottle of milk, a piece of cheese and 10 eggs. Nowadays

that’s impossible –

there are simply too many security cameras

Happy Birthday to Moira Morrison who turned 90 on June 21st! She celebrated the day with family and a slice of cake.

History of the Duck

Race

July 1st marks Canada’s 151st Birthday. To celebrate the day, each year a rubber duck race is held right here

in the town of Glen Williams.

A rubber duck race is a type of festival where thousands of rubber ducks race on

a river, usually within the city. Normally they are fundraising events and the ducks are given numbers which enables the par-

ticipants to "adopt" a rubber duck for a small amount of money. If the rubber duck

wins or places well, the participants will win money or a prize of some sort.

The first rubber duck race took place in Ottawa. In the 1990s rubber duck races

spread across the industrialized world. Quack Quack!

Highlights From June

The Strawberry Social was a great time to reconnect with old friends and make some new friends. We all enjoyed the great food and wonderful entertainment.

The weather was perfect for our Happily Ever After Farm Tour. Esther the Pig was resting comfortably in the homes front patio and we

got the oppor-tunity to see many of the famous pigs friends includ-ing Esther’s faithful com-panion and best friend Cornelius the turkey and Lenny the pig.
