History Texans have long had sense of the vastness of their state. The mountains and basins region of Texas was probably the hardest region to live in. If you wanted good food you had to trample through basins and climb tall mountains. You had to shoot or stab your meal. You had to cook it over an open fire on that mountain and that could set the whole mountain on fire if you weren’t careful. Basins look like big pits of wet, thick, mud with crusted mulch around it. The mountains were very tall and steep. If you took one wrong step, that was bad. The winters were cold and harsh. There was a 99% out of a 100% that a blizzard was going to break out. During the winter, it was hard to walk up snowy mountains with heavy gear.

Fun factsThe Mountains and Basins section of Texas comprises the far western region of the state and, as its name implies, contains a good mix of mountainous and flat geographical features. The Pecos River forms the area’s eastern border, while the international border with Mexico and the state line with New Mexico form the region’s southern, western and northern borders. The region is also known as the Trans-Pecos or Big Bend Country.
