Warm weather months bring an abundance of freshfruit and vegetables, and for those who enjoy buyinglocal, farmers markets are popular destinations.

Produce choices available at farmers markets arenow reaching their peak. So how can you make themost of this seasonal bounty?

Chef Daniel Reyes, culinary faculty member at TheArt Institute of California believes that its importantto know the difference between buzz words commonat markets. If you have questions about howfarmers do something, they are more than happy totalk to you and educate you about sustainable andorganic farming, he says. Reyes explains that whilesome produce may look unfamiliar, a good marketsalesperson will provide tips on how to use theitems. Farmers markets are not just great places tobuy, theyre also great places to learn new culinarytechniques and food pairings.

Another tip? Shop early - and remember to bringbags to carry your items home. Farmers marketsallow people to gather in a common place to meetneighbors and make friends who share a passionfor locally grown food. The markets build a sense ofcommunity, according to Reyes, that contributes toa stronger local economy and smaller environmentalfootprint.

This sentiment is shared by Chef Elizabeth Thompson, culinary arts faculty member at The Art Institute ofCalifornia - Inland Empire. Thompson recommendsasking farmers whats best to buy right now.

They grow whatever they sell, which makes themexperts. Ask to put be put on their email list. They

may send out information about what is in seasonand what to do with it, she adds.

CSA - Community Supported AgricultureIn addition to visiting the farmers market, manypeople are choosing to become CSA shareholders, paying in advance for weekly boxes of produce.

CSAs create a direct relationship between farmer andconsumer, according to Thompson. CSAs allow busypeople to pick up their share boxes at a convenientlocation, and teach them how to use whats inside.Forthose interested in supporting local farmers, CSAsprovide a critical inux of cash to farmers during theoff season, helping them to better prepare for theplanting season ahead.

Whether shopping weekly at the farmers market orpicking up a CSA box of fresh produce, buying locaallows consumers to taste fruit and vegetables attheir peak avor. From striped heirloom tomatoesto strawberries picked fresh just hours before, farmfresh foods provide a burst of avor and a connectionto the community that cannot be found within a largesupermarket.

Our cover model this month is Susan Hunter, Trilogyresident.

How long have you lived here? Since Sept. 2005off and on, I was waiting on my husband to retire tomove full time to AZ .

Where did you move from? Originally I am froma small town Sibley, Louisiana but lived and raisedour two boys in Washington, MO. When our last onegraduated we were ready to move to more sunshineand outdoor living for a more simplied lifestyle. InMissouri we had a beautiful farm place on 10 acres ofland we had a fruit orchard and a beautiful garden, herb garden, goldsh pond and owers galore. Itwas nice but also a lot of work.

I quit my job of 14 years at a college and wantedsomething more fullling and less stressful. Myhusband also quit his job of almost 20 years at alocal utility company. We both had many talents andskills so we knew we would nd new and excitingwork ahead.

In 2005, We sold, donated or gave away almosteverything and bought an RV to simplify our life anddownsize. We wanted travel and have fun! We didntwant to be attached to stuff. It was hard at rstand we quickly learned we had to be very organizedin a smaller space but quickly grew to love it. It wasso nice not having the maintenance and work we hadwith our home in MO. The hardest thing my husbandand I ever did was give away our Blue Healer. Shewas 8 years old and loved living outside, having therun of 10 acres. We couldnt imagine keeping her inan RV it would have been selsh of us so we gaveher to a friend who had kids and 20 acres and Imsure she was sad when we left - but she grew to lovethose kids and lived to be almost 17 years old.

Rick quickly found work in AZ and I had the

opportunity to do what I really wanted to do. I hadthe opportunity to explore Yoga and started workingas Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor in Trilogy.

Why Trilogy? We bought in Trilogy end of 2007 - thetiming was good and we loved the active lifestyle thecommunity offered. We also liked the greenery inthe desert.

Tell us about your family. We have two grown sonswith families - two grandkids - Dustin age 12 and

Hailey 7 months old - these grandkids have changedour lives.

What do you do now?Now I have a combination ofbusinesses that seem to all meld together. I havealways heard if you want to be good at somethingyou have to focus on that one thing. I have tried togive up some of my businesses but just cant let themgo!

Today I teach private Yoga classes and in the Fall Iteach Yoga at Sunset Park at Vistancia - I also havea business ZEROchlorine, LLC if you are looking toget out of a chlorinated or salt water pool we alsooffer whole house ltration for spring like water atevery faucet in your home. When I wasinterviewing the owner to possibly advertise in theMountain View Magazine I was offered an opportunityto work part time for Estrella Publishing and it hasbeen great! When moving houses you need to remember tomake plans for your special family members, too- your pets. Pets add an extra element to a move,

but it doesnt have to be stressful for you or yourpet. Here are some tips to help you plan your movesuccessfully with your pet in mind.

    * Microchipping - The Humane Society recommendsall pet owners microchip their cats and dogs, especiallybefore planning a move. It doesnt matter how longthe distance, an animal can easily get confused inthe chaos of the move and then become lost.* Name tags - Update your cat or dogs collar withits name, your new home information, and a phonenumber that will stay active even after the movingperiod.

    * Food and medications - Dont pack your dogs orcats food and medications until you are ready to getinto the car to make the move. Be sure to also haveat least an extra week of both in supply, just in caseyou experience delays in your travels. Put all thematerials into a travel bag on top of other luggageso it is handy.* Practice travels - If youve never traveled with yourpet prior to the move, start taking it on short rides. Youmay discover your cat gets motion sickness, or thatyour dog prefers to ride with a training harness, ratherthan inside a crate. Knowing your pets preferences

can help you work with your vet to determine whetherany medicationsare needed.* Make a list ofemergency vetclinics in townsalong your routeso you haveinformation incase you need tomake a suddenstop for your pet.* On moving day,

be sure to keepyour pet in yourpersonal car orin the cab of themoving truck.Never put a petin the back ofa Penske truck, because it couldbecome injured

or sick. Have plenty of food and water available, andconsider not feeding your pet for a couple of hoursbefore you depart to avoid an upset stomach.

    * While packing the moving truck, keep your petin a small room in the house so it doesnt becomeoverwhelmed by the commotion. A bathroom orcloset works well. Put a note on the door advisingyour friends or professional movers to not open thedoor for the protection of your pet.* During rest stops along your route, be sure to keepyour pet leashed or in a crate, and keep it in a well-ventilated area. Schedule these rest stops everytwo hours. Trucks and cars can get dangerously hotvery quickly in the summer, so dont leave your petin a closed vehicle without air conditioning for anyamount of time.

    * Upon arrival at your new home, put your pet ina small room while the unpacking happens. Oncethe truck is unloaded, you can let your pet out toexplore your new home together. Also, check withlocal ordinances on required licensing for your pet.Keep your pets vet records handy in case you needto show documented proof of vaccination.

While the new home will look and feel different, thefamiliar smells of your belongings will help it adjustquickly. And in no time at all, youll be moved in andit will feel just like home.

When was the last time you met with a nancialprofessional? Would you be more likely to keep thoseappointments if you knew some specic questions

to ask? These meetings provide an importantopportunity for you to ensure your strategy is stillon track and ensure your family and nances areprotected. You can get the most out of your meetingby asking the right questions.

Whether its your rst meeting or your 20th, considerasking these questions when meeting with a nancialprofessional:

    1. Is my coverage adequate?Ensuring proper nancial protection against death, disability or injury is one of the most important things

you can do for your family. Talk to your nancialprofessional about cost concerns, protection optionsand how you can make sure that your family will becovered nancially in the event of an untimely deathor disability. If youve experienced major life changeslike the birth or adoption of a child, purchased a houseor gotten married, chances are your protection willneed updating.

    2. What are some creative ways we can refnemy strategy to help maximize benefts?A nancial professional can help you organize yournancial strategy in a way that factors in thingslike taxes and market volatility, and he or she willknow what changes are on the horizon that couldaffect you. A nancial professional can also helpuse primary products, like life insurance, in uniqueways - like helping supplement a retirement incomestream. These are applications many dont knowabout but can offer different advantages to yournancial strategy.

    3. How are my fnancial strategies aligning withmy values?Having a nancial strategy that allows you to align

your nances with your values is another importanttopic to bring up. If you have charitable causes youwant to support, or volunteer trips you want to take, make sure your nancial professional knows aboutthem. He or she can help you develop ways to bringyour generosity to life.

    4. Tell me about the strength and stability ofyour company or organization.Insurance is only as strong as the ability of yournancial institution to pay out claims when you need

to claim a contract. Make sure to investigate thestrength and stability of any company youre workingwith to ensure it is nancially sound enough to make

    good on its obligations.

    5. What should I do differently in the next year? This seems like an easy question, but youd be amazedhow few people ask it. Your nancial professional isoften in a unique position to help you stay aheadof the curve when it comes to your future strategyneeds. Taking advantage of market volatility andensuring your future protection needs are just twoof the many variables to consider. Yearly meetingswith a nancial professional can help you hone yournancial strategies for the upcoming year and helpkeep them as healthy as possible.

Your time is valuable, and your nancial future iseven more valuable to you and your family. Makesure youre maximizing both and ensure you get themost out of meeting with your nancial professional

Dad?, I asked in a small voice. It was after dinner, and the game was on. Baseball; his favorite. Canyou help me? I tiptoed over to him, calculator in

one hand and spiral notebook in the other. He ippedon the light next to him and patted the arm of hisrecliner.

These small moments have become some of myfavorite memories I have of my father. He alwayssaid yes when I asked him for help. Id perch on thearm of his chair, pointing to the problem I was stuckon. Wed work together on those problems, tryingto make sense of numbers and gures. We (adults)often forget to live in the moment, especially whenthose moments arent the ones youd think to snapa picture of. Try to be in the moment when helping

your kids with their homework. They wont be theonly ones who benet.

Your child should start their homework without you.Set aside a time when your son or daughter can cometo you with questions. This helps establish a routineand good study habits. Also, this allows you to have

time to yourself while your child works through theproblems they can solve on their own. Make a pointto focus on your child when that time does come

Its not the quantity of time, but the quality of themoments youre truly present that are important.

While helping your kids with homework can be agreat way for you to show your support, you shouldbe careful not to take over. Stop and ask, Am Ihelping you? or Is what were doing making sense?periodically to check that youre both on the samepage. Dont be afraid if your child doesnt get all ofthe answers and avoid the temptation of lling in theblanks for them. These unanswered questions shouldbe discussed with their teacher when the homeworkassignment is turned in. Teaching your child that its

okay to not always know the answer and that askingfor help from the teacher is not anything to feel badabout will leave a more lasting impact than simplywriting the answer for them will.

Homework memories arent special because my dadwas a math wizard, conjuring the correct answersto my math equations. He didnt always have theanswer. I remember being frustrated when my daddidnt hand me the solution to a problem. The truthis, Ive learned more about how to be successful byovercoming problems on my own than I ever would

have if someone had just given me the answers.Thats an invaluable lesson. Looking back on thesemoments I see my dads willingness to be therefor me when Ive needed him. Be there, when yourchildren ask for help. Be there when you dont knowthe answer. Be there in the moment, because theseare the moments that make up our lives.

Living in the momentWhat day is it? asked Pooh. Its today, squeaked Piglet.

My favorite day, said Pooh. A.A. Milne

People spend all week looking forward to Friday,All year for summer,

And all their lives for happiness.Anonymous

High School just started for me a few days ago,and already Im feeling almost overwhelmed withschool, schoolwork, friendships, teacher/studentinteractions, and keeping my parents involved is justicing on this responsibility cake. With all these thingsto do, life can seem very full of troubles. Its not hardto lose sight of whats important to you.

With things like homework, friends/parties,and other such events, you can start losing touchwith whats happening now and looking forward tosee whatll be happening then. And then when yourethere, youll be too busy looking towards the nextthing, that you start losing track of whats happeningthen. In order to fully appreciate life, you have tolearn to live in the moment.

Living in the moment means enjoying life as it

happens, not enjoying life for what will happen.Imagine if everybody spent their lives looking forwardto something happening tomorrow. If they were sofocused on what was going to happen that theyforgot to do what should be done then, then whatwas going to happen tomorrow will never happen. Its a destructive cycle.

I know that school can sometimes be boring. Oh,how I know. I also know how much fun the weekendand the summer can be. The problem is, if you focuson those things for too long, you lose sight of the funthings that happen during the rest of the week and

year. You then spend your free time wishing you hadthose days back, which is the opposite of what youused to do; you are now living in the past.

In conclusion: both living in the future and living inthe past lead to nothing but sad memories and afeeling of missing out. Living in the moment, however, gives you a feeling of accomplishment and happinesswhere you have lived your life to the fullest. You see,Life is not a journey, but an adventure.

    The Giver by Lois Lawry

Admittedly, I have been reading a lot of books that

are soon to become movies. There is a reasonableexplanation for this. As much as I love movies, Iprefer to read the book rst. Ive been known to passon a movie because I havent yet read the book. Solately, Ive been busily trying to read novels beforethey hit the big screen.

The Giver is a young adult book about a futureeutopia. Or is it a dystopia?

Jonas has been raised in a future idyllic world witha premium on equality. Children wear the sameoutts and all get their rst bikes on their ninth

birthday. Children begin volunteering at age 8 suchthat the community elders can select the correctcareer path for them by age 12, when they will begintheir occupational training. Dangers and hazardshave nearly been eradicated and there are effectivemedications to ensure that community members donthave to experience pain or discomfort. Everybodyin Jonass community has adequate homes, stable

employment, and ample food. Community membershave been trained from a young age to express theifeelings accurately, apologize when appropriate, and

accept the apologies of others quickly and graciouslyBut as Jonas starts his new job, he will learn thathis community had to give up a lot in order to livethis ideal existence and he begins to wonder if thesacrices were worth the benets. And if not, doeshe alone have the power to effect change for hisentire community?

With themes similar to The Hunger Games andDivergent, this is a novel that will really make youthink.

And after you have nished reading the book, you

can go see how the movie compares. Or, if you havealready seen the movie, you can read the book andsee how well the movie did.
