What is a Mountain Lion?A mountain lion can be also knows as a:• Puma• Panther• Cougar
Scientific Name: • Puma Concolor
Can it be used as a pet?• No it cannot. Mountain lions have not been domesticated for
human use.
Where does it Live? The mountain lion once roamed all over the U.S. However today, their range in the Midwest and Eastern U.S have nearly disappeared. They can be found in California and Texas but small populations can be found east of the Mississippi River. There is also a small population in Florida. Habitat: forest, prairies, deserts, swamps, savannahs, mountainsTheir neighbors:
• Deer• Coyote• Porcupine• Raccoons• Bears• Rabbits• Birds
Predator or Prey?• It has no real natural predator but it needs to be wary of bears due to their great size
advantage.
Changing to Survive
The color tones of the mountain lion change according to the prevailing tones of the habitat within that particular subspecies range. They are solitary animals but travel in pairs. They do not have a fixed mating season but they usually prefer the spring.
Fun Facts… • Although they are good swimmers, they rather not get
in the water because they do not like to get wet. • Young mountain lions have spots but adults do not• They do not roar, but females have a loud scream that is
believed to attract males. • A human has better chance of being struck by lightning
than dying because of a mountain lion.
