While there are signs of activity in the area dating back

to the Bronze Age, Douglas was first mentioned in

documents from 1251. The area developed as an urban

settlement in the early 1700s, when it became a centre of

sailcloth industry. Further textile mills opened in the 19th

century, including St Patrick’s Woollen Mills, providing

ample employment for workers in the surrounding areas.

Douglas soon became a prominent suburban area, and

was particularly popular among the nobility. The village’s

reputation as one of Cork’s most important suburbs was

sealed with the opening of the electric tram connection

to the city centre at the turn of the 20th century.

Lifestyle

For those who love the outdoors, the Greenway walking and cycling

trail along the former Cork to Monkstown railway line is located

nearby. Alternatively, enjoy a tree-lined stroll through Garryduff

Woods, also within walking distance of Mount Woods.

Sports fans will be drawn to Garryduff Sports Centre, one of Cork’s

largest sports facilities, which houses facilities for tennis, hockey, soccer
