THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – On Fasting, by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

An act is virtuous through being directed by reason to some virtuous good. Now this is consistent with fasting, because fasting is practiced for a threefold purpose. First, in order to bridle the lusts of the flesh, wherefore the Apostle says (2 Cor. 6:5-6): “In fasting, in chastity,” since fasting is the guardian of chastity. For, according to “Venus is cold when Ceres and Bacchus are not there,” that is to say, lust is cooled by abstinence in meat and drink. Secondly, we have recourse to fasting in order that the mind may arise more freely to the contemplation of heavenly things: hence it is related (Dan. 10) of Daniel that he received a revelation from God after fasting for three weeks. Thirdly, in order to satisfy for sins: wherefore it is written (Joel 2:12): “Be converted to Me with all your heart, in fasting and in weeping and in mourning.” The same is declared by Augustine in a sermon (De orat. et Jejun. [*Serm. lxxii (ccxxx, de Tempore)]): “Fasting cleanses the soul, raises the mind, subjects one’s flesh to the spirit, renders the heart contrite and humble, scatters the clouds of concupiscence, quenches the fire of lust, kindles the true light of chastity.” [Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica Question 147: OF FASTING].

No refreshments will be served on Sundays during Lent, except for Laetare Sunday, March 14th.

Page 3: Mount St. Michael · do not attend St. Michael’s Academy, 9:30 - 10:20 a.m. on Sundays. These classes will resume in September. DOCTRINE CLASS – 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays,

SECURITY AT THE MOUNT – In the last month or so, Father has asked some volunteers to keep an eye on things at the Mount. This is for the safety, security and protection of all. You will see them at the gate before Sunday Mass and in the evenings. Please be respectful and cooperative with their purpose to verify who is entering the premises. Thank you. Stickers will be provided today downstairs. Please either put them on your vehicle’s front drivers side bumper (recommended) or at least keep it in your car so that you can show it to the security mem-ber on duty. Otherwise, if the person doesn’t know you, he will have to ask who you are.

PRETZEL SALE - sponsored by Ancillae Regi-nae Sodality. Profits to benefit the St. Francis Xavier Missionary Guild. Pre-Order ONLY! Or-ders will be taken today Sunday, Feb. 21st after the morning Masses. Fresh homemade pretzels to be distributed on Sun. Feb. 28th. Questions, please contact Sr. Marie Vianney.

EMBER DAYS – The Ember Days occur this week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They are set aside four times each year as spe-cial days of prayer and penance. Those 21 through 59 years of age are obliged to keep the fast (one main meal only, taken after noon, and two other small meatless meals which together would not equal a regular main meal. Eating between meals is not permitted.). Those 7 years of age and older are obliged to observe partial abstinence (meat only at the main meal) on Wednesday and Saturday, and complete absti-nence on Friday. The purpose of the prayer and penance is to atone for our sins, to draw down God’s blessings upon the particular quarter of the year, and to beseech God for worthy vocations to the priesthood.

BLESSED ASHES – This is a sacramental that we receive at the beginning of Lent. Because it is received in a public manner, only Catholics and those preparing to become Catholics, i.e. cate-

chumens, may receive it. For those unable to come on Ash Wednesday, the blessed ashes will be distributed on the following Sunday.

ST. IGNATIUS LIBRARY - Mount Library will be open today, Sunday, Feb. 21st from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Come and get your spir-itual reading for Lent!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE/STUDENTS FOR LIFE The Students for Life is signed up to pray at Planned Parenthood on Division each Wednesday and Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. through March 24th. All are welcome.

COVID-19 VACCINE – The position of the CMRI priests is that we do not recommend this vaccine, which seems to have been a rushed procedure, and which, in some cas-es, tragically involved the use of aborted babies’ cells. One may, however, under the principles of material cooperation explained in Catholic Moral Theology, take the vaccine for a proportionate cause, such as great danger to health, loss of employment, dis-honorable discharge from the military, etc. that will result by not taking it. This is what Bishop Pivarunas approved as our policy in the matter, which was discussed at length at the recent priest meeting at the Mount.

AUCTION MEETING - The next on-line Auc-tion meeting will be on Wed, Feb 24th from 10am-11am. If you have attended an online auction meeting in the past, you will receive an invite. If you would like to be added to the email list, please contact Ronette at 509.993.6255.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY – On February 28 the 2nd collection will be for the poor and needy – a opportunity to prac-tice almsgiving during the season of Lent.

PRIEST TRAVELS – Fr. Pham is on Mass circuit to Georgia, and will be returning on Saturday, February 27.

MODESTY CORNER – To help inspire modesty and purity in a world that so often lacks it

“Is it not, then, clear that there is a limit which no style of fashion can make us over-step, and beyond which fashion works the ruin of one's own soul and those of others?

Some young women may say perhaps that a certain style of clothing is more conven-ient and also more healthful; but if it be-comes a serious and imminent danger to the salvation of the soul, it is certainly not healthy for the spirit: it becomes a duty to renounce it...

If, for mere personal pleasure, one has not the right to endanger the physical health of others, is it not perhaps still less permissible to compromise the health, nay, the very life, of their souls? If, as some women claim, bold fashions do not have a pernicious influence on them, what do they know of the effect they may have on others? What as-surance have they that they do not arouse evil incentives?... If some Christian women suspected the temptations and the down-falls they cause in others by their dress and overfamiliarity, to which, in their levity they give such scant importance, they would be horrified by their responsibility.” Pope Pius XII, on Fashion and Modesty, as printed in November, 2020 Adsum newsletter

FORTY HOURS – Every year we observe this beautiful devotion during Lent (this year it will be February 26-28). It is done in memory of the forty hours during which the Body of Jesus lay in the sepulcher, and is obligatory in each parish church. To show their love and appreciation for the Blessed Sacrament, all families and individuals of the parish should assist at Mass and make at least one Holy Hour during these days of grace. The Holy Hour signup sheet is in the vestibule (some of the Parish organizations and Guilds will be having their own publicly-led Holy Hours as well). Remember that the nearest approach to a foretaste of Heaven is the time spent in silent adoration of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Altar. The Forty Hours booklet will be available in the vestibule. N.B. The 9:30 am Mass next Sunday is AT THE RECTORY, because of the length of Forty Hours closing Mass.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE – You are encouraged during the penitential season of Lent to peacefully and prayerfully picket whenever you can at Planned Parenthood at 123 E. Indiana Ave., joining the spiritu-al power of fasting to the praying of the Holy Rosary. Information about the efficacy of saving babies’ lives is available at http://www.40daysforlife.com/spokane.

SODALITY LENTEN SCAVENGER HUNT

The Ancillae Reginae Sodality is hosting a Lenten Scavenger Hunt. Each Sunday of Lent a clue will be posted in the bulletin, which will lead to a coupon hidden on the Mount grounds. If you find the coupon bring it to Sr. Marie Vianney to be redeemed. May this inspire devotion in families this Lent.

Week 1 Clue: Jesus was pressed to the GROUND beneath the weight of the sins of the world.
